I see the signs of greatness in the development teams. The Hand writing is on the wall, BLizzards days are coming to an end in one years time. Bioware has challenged the reason of mmos which were an attempt to broaden the gaming experience with massive multiplayer realities. At the time of everquest this was a great way to enhance the experience since graphics or interpersonal story driven game line were not possible at the time.
Now they are,...
So what has happened? A great exodus from mmo gaming because the SP game that we all played from the start before mmos has evolved into a greatness that now topples the mmo universe.
But do not fret, the greatest game is yet to come and it is again from Bioware...in 2011 They will breathe life into mmos again with the launch of the Old republic.
Bioware is not lucky, they know what they are doing.
They saw the mmo reality hitting its height with WoW, the Greatest mmo to exist. But, there was no path further unless you delve back into the rpg roots of mmo's and bring forth a new age.
YES A NEW AGE IS UPON US! BIOWARE IS BRINGING IT AND THOSE WHO RULED THE PAST WILL BECOME RUST UPON THE STONE TABLETS THAT WILL BE SET FORTH BI THE WARE.

What the hell are you talking about?
WOW! You seemed very moved by the game! Did they just release a new video about content again that rocked? *rushes to site to check* Nope.
Well yeah I agree that the game looks very very nice, and shoudl definitely be worth looking into come Open Beta or I'll just buy the box and jump right in.
Blizzard however is working on a SciFi Fantasy MMO btw, and from what I hear its FPS. So, if they still have some magic left in them I wouldn't be surprised that the game looks really amazing and on top of that perhaps they will release some sneak peeks come Blizzcon 2010. I think this is very very likely.
You are also leaving out RED5 Studios btw. They have been working a new MMO for years. And the top designers that helped create WoW are working for RED5 now.
So if TOR doesn't pan out there is always Blizzards new game or RED5's. 1 out of 3 sounds like good odds to me my friend.
Do not try to be a great gamer, just be a gamer. Cause, I don't care how good you are anyway.
A linear storyline based game will not be more popular than the more open WoW. What you have to do is make a game that is more open than WoW to beat WoW. Like Darkfall for example. You need innovation, not handcuffs.
The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
You need to at least draw the obvious parallel that what made WoW so poised for success was Blizzards domination of PC gaming in the preceding years. That is why they were able to take their time, and the same story is true for Bioware. But don't forget about Bethesda and their new MMO, they are similarly poised to hit big, although TOR will certainly be bigger.
A lot will depend on the success of Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3. I don't think those games will be as successful as the predecessors, especially diablo. Blizzard is running the same formula they already perfected 10 years ago.

So you like Bioware games, I get that. I like some of them too. Bioware RPGs and MMOs aren't even on the same playing field. It's bad enough you are trying to compare them, but to declare one a winner over the other is ridiculous.
parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.
Listen bub, I like your heart and knowledge...some one I can speak to.
Blizzard going Sci-fi?...too late Bioware has been setting this up since ME1, DA, ME2, TOR ME3
Blizzard does not know how to make a rpg anymore...they got lost in the find the 5 rats hunt trying to defeat EQ.
Bioware is on to something greater. Everyone will have a team of npc's and make a great collaborative massive story. They are first on this, will you still hunt rats?
Also, granted blizzard is great but there is no way they can break into scfi, they only got StarCraft as their knowledge base and thats RTS.
Open world is over dude, we are not at the level to do it right. You need structure, Politics, passion, drama.
How long have you been gaming? This is not an attack question.
Open world is over dude, we are not at the level to do it right. You need structure, Politics, passion, drama.
An open world is better than being in handcuffs with a rabid wombat in a small room.

At least there's something to eat?
Who is doing the eating is a bit of an issue though...

I will wait and see. A lot of it sounds cool, but often times what sounds cool turns out to be crap. Vanguard sounded cool for example, then turned out to be crap.
I think the multiplayer dialog sounds very fun. I want to play that game.
But if it ends up being a solo fest like WoW, then what good is multiplayer dialog?

Intelligent man, I like you lets debate.
The Problem I see with Bethesda is that their games get boring, you get too powerful.
Starcraft 2 thats a for sure hit, no argument there. The rts crowd has been dying for something better than the sims
Diablo3...this is a wild card. I am a diehard Diablo fan and I will buy the game because I must. But this is not going to be something I am going to play over again.
I am speaking to you all as a gamer, just like you lets try to reason with what we want, whats going to work.
As a Gamer I'd have to say, I want bigger story, I want mmo chat, I want competition. But I want it on a more complex level like in Mass Effect with no saves.
Deflect Post HiJack.
Thanks for your opinion im glad everyone has its own.
WHile I most certainly applaud your enthusiam, I am afraid that I do not share it. The main reason being that Bioware is but a few months shy of going to Beta testing stage and they have yet to discuss much about the game besides a small bit of its combat style and its epic storylines. Little else has been revealed, let alone discussed. Of the small information that has been released, I find little to be overly enthusiastic about. My biggest hang up? NPC controlled party "companions".
If you take the SW:tOR predecessors, KotOR, you will same games that are awesome for their stories, and good in their combat, but little else of them stands out. Will SW:tOR resemble KotOR heavily? One can only assume, and that is not something I like to do. I rely on the information given, but as we have seen, that's not much.
I worry about SW:tOR in many areas. First and foremost would be the areas of the game that have nothing to do with combat and story. Where are the other things that really help to make MMOs great? Where is the crafting at? Will it be there at all? They say yes, but I am extremely fearsome of it, because of the way they did describe their vision of it. What little they did talk about.
I'm not going to dig for it, but they said something along the lines of "simple" and "easily accessable". That really does scare me. I'm deeply afraid it is going to go the way of WoW crafting and be so overly simplified as be become down right stupid. If they do it like WoW, you will have a crafting system where you combine one piece of metal, a tube, a wooden stock, some other random item and after 5 seconds of crafting time, you have a brand new T-21 rifle. I'm sorry, but no thanks. Not to mention, after you make enough of the T-21's to get to the next level of crafting, you will NEVER make one again. Let's also not forget the fact that nearly every other rifle you can get from a loot drop will be significantly better than any crafted version you could make. Is that the way it will be? I most certainly hope not, but they have not given out any other information besides "simple" and "easily accessable" that coupld possibly lead me to a different conclusion.
In light of that possibility in the sceme of crafting, what does that mean for the economy? Are we again going to be relgated to an Auction House only system, like WoW's, where the only interaction between players will take place via a market screen in some random building in major cities? Again, I hope not. But unless they come out with some other information besides "simple" and "easily accessable", this will be another area that I have great concern for.
What about things not having anything to do with crafting, combat or story? I'd love to speculate on those, but there is nothing to speculate on. They have said the worlds will be "large and open". But to what extent? Will it be like WoW and SWG where the worlds are large and open? Or will they be like Guild Wars and Dungeons and Dragons Online, where once outside of a major city or town, you now exist in some instance made specifically for you and your avatar or your party.
Let's not even begin to talk about my fears for the "multiplayer" aspect of it. One phrase... "NPC companions" This phrase in and of itself causes me GREAT concern. I am by no means a stickler for forced grouping. Not no way, not no how. But I am one of those types of players that likes to see a slight need to rely on my fellow player. Of course this carries over into far more things than combat, mainly crafting and the economy. I don't mind if the game is soloable from start to end-game. I could care less. But when they make the game not soloable, then allow for NPC controlled companions, it kind of kills the whole MMO aspect to it. Does it not? I mean seriously? What is the difference, in combat only, between an MMO that allows NPC controlled companions, and a game like, Dungeon Siege?
Okay, I think I have gone on long enough. I do hope I have not rained on anyone's parade too much. That MOST CERTAINLY was not my intent. I do sincerely hope that SW:tOR turns out to be a phenominal game. If it does, I will MOST CERTAINLY be playing it. But again, I have not seen enough yet, or i've seen a little bit too much of stuff that gives me pause, to declare this game to be "the second coming". But as always... "Your mileage may vary."
Sincerely,
Me

I can almost hear the outcry of disappointment and anger already. Sigh
Normally I'm the first one to jump on Horkathane posts.. 9 times out of 10 they are way off base. This one is more of opinion then fact, like when he said champions was the WoW killer how many times he's misquoted subscription numbers... or when he told everyone that TOR was a single player game with multiplayer that he read in some magazine somewhere but didn't post any links (shortly thereafter there was a massive dev response debunking the disbelievers claims on TOR not being an MMO)
But, the stars may be aligned on this one if BioWare playes their cards right. They have a good development cycle, the hype is in the right place, and the gameplay isn't overthought or too complicated that it won't appeal to a mainstream crowd.
Will TOR be the new WoW? I can't say, but its doubtful. Is BioWare the new blizzard though? Well, yeah, I believe TOR will put out a very strong game comparable to the launch of WoW. This is just my personal prediction though.
The one thing I don't like about Bioware games is that they aren't as open as Id like. I'm an explorer and I like to go off the beaten path. Bioware has great stories and all but I just feel like there isn't much else to do besides the main story line and a few side quests.
I guess I got spoiled playing Morrowind and Oblivion, where I can do other things besides the main story line. Just go exploring some random places steal things or just murder a whole town if I wanted to. As much as I love a good story I need freedom too or else the game gets to boring just running quests.
So if there isn't much exploration in TOR I might get bored quick, but I like the voice over Idea and the multiplayer dialog choices. So maybe if Im playing with a group all the time It may keep me interested cuz I may never really know whats going to happen next.
You need to at least draw the obvious parallel that what made WoW so poised for success was Blizzards domination of PC gaming in the preceding years. I think both Bethesda and Bioware have had balance issues in their singleplayer games to the point that their MMO efforts will involve them really adding something new that we haven't seen from them yet. BEthesda let's players get quite overpowered, totally, but look at the problem Bioware has had balancing the classes in the last 10 years. All their games, while great, really favor the damage classes.
With the description of classes in TOR, I fear that Bioware might be going the boring route of largely copying what has been received as balanced in the past. OK that is playing it safe to avoid a balance debacle, but it is not very exciting to see the same old classes. I'm also worried they will expect the henchmen to do a lot of damage when the player is a support class, but so far the henchmen have been inadequate for damage dealing in the bioware games, and this would magnify for an MMO.
Starcraft 2 thats a for sure hit, no argument there. The rts crowd has been dying for somethin better the the sims
It will be a hit, but not as big as SC1 I doubt. It is still the same formula, it will not recapture the masses as it once did. Everyone played SC1, now RTS fans will be the ones rushing to buy SC2.
Diablo3...this is a wild card. I am a diehard Diablo fan and I will buy the game because I must. But this is not going to be something I am going to play over again.
I just feel that the heyday for hack and slash has passed. Look at games like Titan's Quest and Hellgate, they really captured the Diablo 2 feel and brought it to 3D, but those games also kind of sucked. Diablo 3 won't suck, but I just can't imagine people taking battlenet as seriously as they did back in 2000, not even close.
I am speaking to you all as a gamer, just like you lets try to reason with what we want, whats going to work.
As a Gamer I'd have to say, I want bigger story, I want mmo chat, I want competition. But I want it on a more complex level like in Mass Effect with no saves.
TOR will be good, but it is playing it too safe by the looks of it. I don't like to see the same old mechanic of identical groups of henchmen standing around each sidewalk corner waiting to brawl, for example. I will buy TOR, it will be huge, but without taking more risks they can't progress the genre as fast as I would like. Maybe in 5 or 6 years we will have Mass Effect MMO that will really be something new.
Cryptic is trying a Customer Development approach to MMO creation.
Bioware...
Dragon Age and Mass Effect were good but quite generic. I suppose that does make them the next Blizzard doesn't it?
Forever looking for employment. Life is rather dull without it.
Hmm Horkathane by now you should have learned NOT to over-hype yourself with games not yet released.
Champions is a True Next Gen Game, do you still feel this holds up?
My own opinion about SW:ToR is that it looks like a very intresting GAME, so far I don't get a MMORPG fibe from it, but I have no doubt I will be playing the game.
However Story isn't what atracts me to MMO's, I am a gamer that play's several game genre's and for STORY I don't think singleplayer games can be beat'n due to the fact in how you are able to effect the whole ingame world by your actions, due to it being a singleplayer game, so my question would be how much will be effected in SW:ToR, will we effect mainly our own characters story with little to none totall ingame conseqences? Or are we really effect the whole ingame world with our actions, obvious to early to tell really as we only have snippets of info, mostly about the classes, which feel like they going full combat in a MMORPG and for me as a niche mmorpg gamer I want allot more then just a combat oriented experiance from a MMORPG.
Then companions, WHY?, sure I love to solo, but I also love to overcome challenges to great to solo to deal with a group, clan, guild, friends, strangers, what ever REALL players, sure like to have pets in a MMORPG, but companions that as far I can tell have great AI and even personality, again awesome would this be a singleplayer game, but in a MMORPG?
Full Voice Acting, Great and really mean this, this is something that lacks with many MMORPG's, but this is just a bonus, but it also limits the freedom, sure it may have multible choices you may choose from in a conversation/mission/quest, but how free will you actually be due to the decisions you make with the text?
As said SW:ToR looks like a GREAT GAME, for now not so much MMORPG, but only time will tell and I am sure that due to it being a Bioware first attempt at a MMORPG it will gain allot of people trying and playing the game as I have noticed the majority likes MMO's to be mostly combat oriented, I simple can't look at the game for now as being a long term MMORPG I want to play, short term ....sure, but as said it's actually still too early to make a proper opinion about the game regardless how I feel right now.
Wow...(No pun intended)...just when you thought it couldn't be possible for Blizzard to bring even more 10 yr. old elitists to the genre....
I am betting the game will be stupid easy as well.
