EVE Online: New Expansion "Tyrannis" Announced!

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

EVE Online Senior Producer Torfi Frans Olafsson revealed EVE's next expansion, Tyrannis, in a dev blog posted on the official EVE Online website today.

The new expansion will focus on planetary exploration. Tapping into community feedback, CCP Games is looking to fulfill players' desires to "build something big" by allowing the pod pilots of New Eden to explore and develop all of EVE Online's many planets. Players will be able to build "complex networks and facilities" on said planets,  as well as tap them for resources.

There will not be any planetary combat included with the release of Tyrannis, instead, the expansion will focus entirely on industry and exploration. Planetary combat will be introduced with the release of DUST 514, which through its connection with EVE, will allow players to project military force to defend or attack planetary instellations.

For more information on EVE Online: Tyrannis read the full dev blog here.

Tyrannis is set to release this summer, so mark your calendars!

[Thanks Christopher8 for the tip!]

     Awesome!

    Anyone know an estimated release?

I may actually end up joining EvE soon with all that's coming.

I'm excited for the industry component!

    Estimated release is summer 2010.

Sounds pretty exciting to me, can't wait to check it out.

This sounds good but what is completely and utterly insane is that DUST is not scheduled for release on PC but rather on the XBox. Yes thats right, Eve is on PC but not XBox but the future ground combat which will supposedly be linked to Eve is on XBox. So if you want to be part of both aspects of the game not only do you have to buy a new game but also a whole new platform.

    Insane I tell you.

Awesome. I just subbed to EVE recently and am moving along nicely with my Industrial career. This expansion comes at just the right time.

Also, I wonder since combat is non existent on the planets, how this will affect roid and ice mining? I also wonder what kind of " minerals " will be available there? It almost sounds to me like its a safe haven for industrialist to make ISK? Is this a response to the recent changes in mineral prices? Is this going to be only a nullsec activity? This announcement leaves me with tons of questions.

Uninterested. Until they release Incarna, I'm sticking with Star Trek Online.

  • Christopher8Christopher8 Member Posts: 134

I am interested on why they decided to add more passive income, also what about T2, Macro Mining etc.

Also I am betting that Incarna will be unveiled when we hear more about WoD because I am willing to wager that the same engines are being applied to both projects.

    Fucking epic. I love CCP.

I am glad it's Friday because I will not be able to sleep after reading this. My PC and my XBox are ready to go, now I just have to learn how to use my feet and multitask :P

That would be great... I'll have a hard time deciding between WoD & Eve Incarna though O_o

My only complaint about CCP is they keep adding too much new stuff for me to keep up with.

That was about time. When I looked at EVE for the first time in 2008 there was already talk of this.

not to mention what it costs for xbox live =p,  if they incorporated planetside combat to eve itself i would sub in a heartbeat as far as a shooter on the console I would be spending my money on battlefield bad company 2

I know how you feel. A lotto win would equal me building a real life pod and playing eve 23/7 from there. What to use for goo tho....

And, just like that, I will finally begin playing Eve properly.

That is EXACTLY what I thought Eve needed.

If this launches ok, and since they mentioned the Singularity server in the article I can't see why it won't, then I might consider a return to EVE. I just hope Incarna hasn't been kicked in the long grass because DUST will eventually make them more money instead.

    I don't understand something.

Where's the EVE Space Staiton expansion that promised players the chance to not "only be a spaceship" anymore and let players have actual characters to walk around a station with and do various Social Gaming.

    What happened to that?

I get the impression that this Tyranis is merely a orbital spacey version of Sim City. Which is fine... But what happened to the space station thing?

After Tyrannis, based on the release date they're saying for Tyrannis (summer 2010).

Walking in stations is absolutely unnecessary.   Why is it so important to WALK in this game to some people?  It's really not what the game is about.  It's just so amazingly dumb that people won't play this amazing game because the game doesn't revolve around needlessly shuffling around in a station.  If you want to walk so badly, get off your chair and do it!  Seriously, this is the kind of request that ruins games with good vision.

The irony is that most people will probably enter a station, walk to a chair, and sit down again to talk, mostly out of habit.

I don't see what you'd do while walking around a station in EvE that would make sense that isn't easier the way it's currently done.

However, I do see the draw to knowing you have a real avatar somewhere.

By no planatary combat, does that mean if I'm in a ship on a planet and I see someone elses ship, I can't shoot their ship?

(Like, you know - Normal combat that everyone does right now )

    Total eve noob here.

Is it clear how this fits with the current game, am I missing something thats obvious if you play the game. Who owns the planets, it seems they directly link to the current game but if thats the case how can there be no combat? Me no get.

Initially, it'll be all about industrializing and exploring the planets, as mentioned either here or in the linked article.

I'm assuming it will be an experience similar to, but probably not including all the aspects of, RISE.
