mostly ground based combat (ie. not space combat) so not EVE. You can also discount SWG and STO as I've tried those. If it had some type of crafting to it would be good.

Is there anything out there? Should I just sit back and wait for Earthrise?

Ryzom is pretty cool and Earthrise is on the way, yes.

Earthrise is 100% what you will be looking for

so yes, sit back and wait, CB should be around the Corner ( March, according to a source in their Official Forum )

and the game should be out at around May/June

    So What Now?

Fallen Earth may also be something worth checking out, more so now that they have the 10 day trial.

Decent crafting system, though gets a little stale since its possible for everyone to be an omni-crafter and there isn't a quality/grade system for random bonuses, but still deep and covers 97%ish of all in-game items.

Combat is passable, though they are working on an animation overhaul with the PvP update patch they have planned around 1.5 I think. FPS stylized, no hard-targeting, cursor location = target. Mounted combat, melee, mutagenics, rifles, pistols, decent blend and overall pretty balanced.

Classless skills system. As you level, you just earn AP, and some quests will give AP rewards as well. Attributes cost 5 AP per point, Skills/Mutagenic Trees are 1 AP per point. Max level chars will be between 800-1100 total AP available to character, so definitely a flexible system. It needs reading up on first though, since there are no respecs available.

Servicable community info/database fansite as well, Globaltechatlas.info, has a character planner, map/quest/item databases, so it plus the trial should be a good set to get your feet wet.

Graphics are probably the weakest point in the game, but still hold their over compared to a lot of games. A little washed in browns/reds, but its set in Arizona desert area. Gear is nice since every piece has a physical pressence on your char. If something takes up 3 slots, it'll cover all those locs on your char (ie, helments w masks, full-suit body armor covering chest, shoulders and arms)

They also have pretty good devs that are active on their own forums, and they've had pretty steady updates since launch and all for the better. (Added Construction crafting to get groundwork for player-housing, reworked Foliage and Shadow systems to clean up graphics and make the game run smoother. Added Gambling/Barter halls and more commuity building systems with the bars. Full 6mo patch progression plan is up on their site.)

It's also a single-server game that handles instancing really well. It's all "phased" instances, so you'll walk through a loading-hallway going in/out of any instance, where it'll put you/your group in a phased copy of the zone. 90% of the world is a seemlessly connected landmass, and even with those phase-instances, you'll only see a load bar when you first login or if you die.

It's an indie-dev'd game, so it has rough spots, but has definite promise. I'd like to think it'll be an EVE-style creeper of an MMO, starting off relatively small, but slowing building the playerbase over the years. I think EVE was running like 3-4 years before they hit 100k subs.

    Lets Push Things Forward

I knew I would live to design games at age 7, issue 5 of Nintendo Power.

Support games with subs when you believe in their potential, even in spite of their flaws.

Fallen Earth, very robust crafting system.

It's slightly future post apocolytic but it uses modern technology (firearms, combustion engines, etc)

Eve is the only true sci-fi game thats worth playing that isn't far past its prime.

Earthrise & Jumpgate Evolution are on the horizon, but I wouldn't hold my breath hoping they are good games.  They are supposed to release this year and neither has shown any gameplay vids for many months.  That's usually a bad sign.

If you don't like Fallen Earth, you best bet is probably to wait for the new Star Wars game.

actually you are mistaken, Masthead studio, on this case, they are doing opposite from what other Dev are doing, usually other Dev Company will release as many vids and ss as possible, giving players on heavy visual ideas, but lack of information, and then ppl will usually ended up upset because the game play did not match the beauty of the visual,

Earthrise in this case, are giving a lots of the in game system and the game play, also all the infos needed, but with limited SS / Vid, this will give players more ideas about how the game will be played

and so far, the SS and Video footage from Masthead looks decent enough

    So What Now?

Like others have mentioned there is Fallen Earth out now with the trial and Earthrise, as you mentioned, sometime in the future.

There is also Afterworld which is being developed by some people that used to play Entropia Universe and didn't like the way it was executed but liked the general concept of the real-cash economy. I've been playing it a little off and on the last few days, and while I haven't tried combat, I did run around the starter area. The graphics are passable if not exactly good, but I used xpadder so I could play it with my gamepad, and so far I find the movement system to be smooth, which is a major thing in my opinion. But it's free and you don't need to "donate" (which will be called depositing when the game officially releases) to play, just do some harvesting (which feels like harvesting in any MMO I've played, but I'm not paying a subscription).

  • TweFojuTweFoju Member UncommonPosts: 1,236

i believe the OP meant to ask for a MMO, therefore i wouldn't count Halo Reach in, although, they are SciFi Modern setting

um, but yeah, your options are little for now

either wait for ER, or play FE, or Ryzom is pretty decent if you aren't into graphic much
