I expect dev's to learn from the histories of other games. Success vs failure models should apply. No, nobody wants a clone, but I think people do expect to play a new game and find most of what they like (from the games they played before) and less/none of the thing they didn't like (from the games they played before).
So many people point to new games and call them 'WoW clones', but for so many games that are supposedly copies of WoW... none have matched the success or achieved the same level of market impact. Even more curious, WoW is far from a perfect game. It lacks many features that I would like to see in an MMO. WoW just has the player base to seeingly support every decision that they make.
Everyone lists the same 5-6 basic qualities for an MMO. I'm looking for each one of those building blocks to simply improve from MMO to MMO as time progresses and as new ones come out. I'm just not seeing it though.
Hopefully 2010/2011 will bring that with new releases?

Because the closer you copy something, the less reason there is for the buyer to leave the original.
Seriously, how much difference is there between one version of a software operating system and the next, even the the new version is slightly better? So therefore, do you rush out and spend 300 bucks for the latest version of Office when the last version is more than adequate for the task. Didn't think so.
Oh well, back on topic. These days I want to see something a bit different. I don't want to grind out any more "kill 10 boar" quests, no more shuttle missions, and I really want a game world that changes based on the actions of the player base.
Heck, you want PVP content, make it so each side has the single goal of destroying the other sides world completely, then reset the game world all over again giving some edge to those who won the previous round.
Something very different is what I'm looking for now, I'm done with the current model.

As a gamer I expect a good game. I don't care to what genre it falls to. Interesting world and engaging story are a plus but they do not exists without the game, although game can be very good without story or world.

I expect to be playing the best game that has ever been made with the best graphics available. The whiners can just go and play WoW or get a better computer, I don't care! I'm a explorer so that's what I want from my game, lots to explore, wilderness, towns and huge capital cities. That's what I want.
I expect some change on how companies handle their games. F2P games are supposed to be free yet they tend to be more expensive than P2P games. I also hate how some games become so dependent on item malls.
i want true innovation not a turd in a dress. I want the devs to understand and come to the fact those who dont know history are doomed to repeat it. I want a Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. Not a Mediocre Online interactive Experience. Step it the fug up! Pull your head out of your ass.
o.O Summarising the above, people want an innovative gameplay which will have the best features from previous MMOs, one which will have a lot of content with every part of it being 100% original, want it to be free to play without an item mall but still keep all the kiddies out and want to have some exclusively PvE content but with FFA PvP, which will give them awesome experience with best graphics but with very low system requirements so that everyone can run it on Full on any PC.
Carry on

WOW has the most subscribers because it has the better standard video game mechanics of the available MMO's.
So people - even in an mmorpg - search for the video game challenge.
Standard video game mechanics include: tight controls in PvP, scaling in boss fights, scores in a way you don't have to sit 12 hours in front of a video screen (because that's not a video game).
Exploring, grinds and kill 10 boars quests that don't have these video game ingredients are dead.
First the gaming fun, then mixing them with the mmorpg part. Blizzard is and was a video game maker first.
That is the key to success and the extremely huge gap in subs between them and the rest.
Want a real mmorpg? Play WOW with experience turned off mode and be Pve_Pvp King at any level without a rat race.

WoW with better graphics?
No, WoW without everything that makes it WoW.
Except for the UI which it stole from Asheron's Call 2.
All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.
I expect something fun to do, whether I want to solo, group, raid, or pvp. When I stop progressing my characters, or run into walls where I *have to* raid or have to group for something, I tend to move on to another game that can provide me fun & something to do.

Something fun and exciting, immersive, and not essentially the same as the $50 game I purchased the last time (though it has been awhile)
I'm tired of PvP with little to no meaning, I'm tired of walking down a dungeon to kill a big bad boss at the end so i can get my next piece of gear..
It doesn't seem to be a lot, but its apparently more difficult than it seems..
