I've played a few MMO's over the years, I typically can't stick with them for long and my unemployed friends have always blown so far past me that I haven't been able to play with them. I've tried a couple of trials for games. Nothing has really struck me as an awesome game, so I thought I'd ask for suggestion for some of the lesser known ones that might be out there.
I really like quests. I read them through and like seeing the story they can tell. The Quests in Warhammer Online were some of the funnest, although a couple of WOW quest chains were pretty good.
I mostly solo, I like grouping but I tend to have trouble finding groups. I hate not being able to do quests because I can't find others of the same level.
The game I most loved was Starwars Galaxies, I played it longer than any other game off and on from launch up until they ruined it. I loved that characters of different levels could work together and all still be functional. But more than anything I loved being free to direct myself; I decided how to entertain myself. Some days I ran a business, some days I was a bountyhunter. Some days I wandered by myself, other times I pvp'd.
I guess I would most like a game like SWG with a lot of things to do in a wide world with only my own desires to guide me. Failing that, a game with good stories, crafting, that you can solo or group through would be nice. Anyone have any suggestions?

Well for the grouping and levels bit, I'd go for City of Heroes, alot of groups and your level doesn't matter.
Not much crafting though, and it does have a system where you can create your own or play other peoples quests or quest arcs.
Give Eve Online a try..I came from the same feeling you had
It might not be a *perfect* match for you, but you could try Ryzom. It has a great crafting system, a non restrictive skill system and the lore is pretty damn good.
It has a free 21-day trial, the client is pretty small (6GB installed) and you should totally give it a try, at least.
If you stand VERY still, and close your eyes, after a minute you can actually FEEL the universe revolving around PvP.
You could try Fallen Earth.
You can roam around the seamless world alone if you wish, or group up. It has lot's of different quests which are very well written and have interesting story lines. Many SWG veterans are now playing FE and having a great time.
A free trial is available too.
Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
I wouldn't suggest Ryzom if you like to solo, this game is pretty unforgiving if you're adventuring alone. There are missions, but they're more of an addition then a drive to the game. There are many thing to love Ryzom for but the solo aspect is probably not one of those. But it does have awesome crafting for sure, there's a lot of freedom, grouping is a lot of fun and the game itself is very rewarding in my opinion.
Fallen Earth has some really well written quests and is totally soloable all the way to level cap. Group content is almost non-existent, or at least was the last time I checked. Which is a shame, because grouping in Fallen Earth makes for one hell of dynamic and fun experience. Crafting is pretty complex, but also pretty pointless in the long run, as everyone can make everything and in my eyes there's not enough customization there.
LotRO is known for it's quests, there's some really good writing there. If you like to solo you might like it, as the game is so easy right now it's not even funny. There's enough group content though and it's pretty fun. Crafting is just plain bad if you ask me, although I haven't experienced it in the expansions.
I hear D&D has pretty involving missions, but can't really elaborate on that as I've never played it.
Good luck with your searches.
Thank you all for the advice!
I just started an EVE trial (was downloading it when I asked).
I really do appreciate the detailed feedback. You can read reviews of games, and not get the answer to a question that someone who's played the game can give you in a sentence. It's also easy to miss a game, just because you haven't heard of it.
Again, thank you for the advice. I'm definitely going to check out the suggested games (since they've all got trials).
Well you will hopefully enjoy EVE. Especially if you do not play a lot. Your skills level in real time so if two people start at the same time, one that plays 10 hours a day and one that plays 10 hours a week you will still learn things at the same speed.
Also in EVE you can be a player that has been around for 1 hr that can help people that have been playing for years. What's awesome is you can start doing whatever you want to do right from the start.
You want to be a guy that makes spaceships, you can start making stuff from the start. In my case I love trading, so I started on Day 1 trading, sure I can't buy things that cost billions of ISK, but I have still doubled my money on a day to day basis.
