Sandbox style fantasy MMORPG?

Justarius1Justarius1 Member Posts: 381

Hullo out there.  I had a question.  Is there a sub-based fantasy "sandbox" style MMO out there in the genre of Fallen Earth?

Important to me:  No cash shop, no RMT beyond, say, a server move.  Mature player base.  Possibility for a role playing community.  Non-theme park design - Aion is an example of what I *don't* want.  Skill based system as opposed to class based would be awesome but not required.

I don't think anything like this exists, but I'm curious.  Right now I get my fantasy fix with Warhammer Online, but I prefer it mainly for the PvP.  It's not really a sandbox style game.  ;)

Though severely dated at this point, the game you describe would be Asheron's Call 1.

Pure sandbox, skill system development, non-theme park game.

Unfortunately it is one of the big 3(UO, AC1, EQ1) and is showing its age.  Hopefully some day there will be a remake of this amazing game that I played for nearly 6 years.

Einherjar_LC says: WTB the true successor to UO or Asheron's Call pst!

Hmm, not sure about strictly pure sandbox.  FFXi is a fantasy and semi-sandbox because they give you alot of content to do, yet none of them are actually necessary.  Problem is that game is already pretty old and the learning curve is not exactly short, plus FFXIV is going to come out this year so I am not sure if FFXI is even a good idea atm.  Also it is a PvE oriented game.

There are plenty of games that claim to be fantasy and sandboxish type of gameplay such as Darkfall or Mortal Online, but they have their own share of issues as well.

Sorry, that is about the best I can do off the top of my head atm.  Maybe someone else will have a better advice.

Edit: I saw AC1 from the reply above and is hitting myself for not remembering it.  LOL  However, yeah AC1 is rather aged even more so than FFXi even.

Any reason you aren't giving Darkfall a shot? I mean it really is exactly what your describing... unless you're turned off by the hardcore PvP ruleset, but honestly give a try anyway, you might find it's not as intolerable as you think.

Fully retired: UO, EQ, AC, SWG, FFXI, DDO:EU, PoTBS, AoC, EvE

Tried: EQ2, Tabula Rasa, Auto-Assault, Isteria, LotRO, Wizard 101

    Looking forward to: Star Citizen

I kind of find the hardcore PvP ruleset off-putting.  I didn't like being constantly ganked in UO and I doubt I'd like it much in Darkfall, either.  That having been said, I am pretty sure the game will offer a free trial soon.  I might give it a whirl then.

So far though everything I've heard about the game seems to imply it's a bit of a time sink - when gear can be full looted, etc.  If I have to spend five weeks getting Awesome Piece of Gear+5 I don't want Random 14 Year Old #6 to be able to take it away from me if I'm randomly afk to take a bathroom break one day.  ;)

Give Ryzom a go. there is a 21-day trial. Im playing it right now, and I absolutely love it.

If you stand VERY still, and close your eyes, after a minute you can actually FEEL the universe revolving around PvP.

I still very early on myself, but one thing I have noticed about Darkfall is that in UO it seemed like you played for literally weeks in order to afford a widdling knife -7 and wet tissue paper armor. Darkfall is much more forgiving in this respect, generally speaking, it only takes a bit of planning and not trying to cheat yourself on trips to the bank in order to avoid not carrying anything you can't afford to lose.

There is a trial now (it's a dollar, not free... but come on... it's a dollar) you REALLY should at least give it a try.

Let me preface this by saying it may not be exactly what you want. I think that Ryzom sounds a lot like what you are looking for. It has no cash shop, is a skill based system, is a sci-fi/fantasy MMO. It is pay to play, but that is about its only drawback that I can conceive of for you. It is sandbox so that is my suggestion.

Strangely enough, I was going to start a thread with the exact same title a bit ago. Ryzom does fit, but its dated, the interface is pretty bad, and there are lots of half finished features due to all the hand changing. The pve is fairly poor as well. Nice setting though.

i doubt he would like DF if he is concerned about pve, as the monsters are sparse in DF

My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.

Actually, there are plenty of monsters in DF. Nothing raid like etc so he probably wouldn't be into it, but there are tons of monster spawns everywhere. Unfortunately, the community is worse than the monsters in that game, which kinda puts a damper on the whole thing.

Meh, the community is a rough crowd, but it's all in good fun....kinda like a biker bar after 10pm.

I also suggest Darkfall to the OP. There's a trial...might as well give it a whirl at least.

when you have to run 5-10 mins in between mob camps, i'd call it sparse

I'm not bashing it, I am just saying the monsters are spread out a lot lol, campred to most other games anyways.

yeah but the ganking is "all in good fun".  Not really sure who is having the good fun, besides the gankers.

yeah it was alright as i use to kill quite a few people and steal all thier stuff,  just early game it can be annoying, going red also was a pain i ended up making a new char made a super hard orc  just took ages getting to places.

Thing is, I hated most about UO the whole PvP/ganking thing.  My favorite part about Warhammer Online PvP?  Scenarios.  Nice, 12 man on 12 man groups that are tests of skill, not numbers or "ganking" - I love them.

I'd play a PvE focused fantasy game if it was sandbox style.  I play Fallen Earth right now.  To me, EVE is "Spreadsheets in Space" - lots of drop down menus and some of the most boring gameplay I've encountered; yes, know, thousands of people like it.  Just saying that to describe the kind of sandbox I DON'T like - EVE politics seem to bring out the worst in people, too.  Even the gaming company there was accused of taking sides in their own game to make it "more dramatic" at one point.  I wouldn't touch that Finnish development company with a ten foot pole, and I like the Finns.  Quiet but charming people. ;)

Fallen Earth is what I *do* like; I'd love to see a fantasy based version someday.  Until then...  it's post apocalyptic wasteland adventures and 12 man scenarios for me, I guess. :D

Graphics look a little stiff, however it does look good.  I am getting very leery of pre-ordering though, since that often translates to playing a "paid" third phase of beta-testing.  I skimmed through the site and am not sure of the, if any, PvP aspects of it - full loot?  all PvP or just limited to certain areas, etc.  Maybe I skimmed too fast.  Right now I am nostalgic for ShadowBane and am wondering if this might not be close.   Will keep an eye on it.

question - is the ganking as bad as they say? Some is expected in  PvP but if you can barely survive as a new player what's the point?  Just asking, since having not played it all I can do is read the comments on forums such as this.
