Memory Problem

xKrNMBoYxxKrNMBoYx Member Posts: 165

Okay, so today I got my other 2gb stick of DDR2 6400 800mhz ram.

Now I have a total of 4gb of ram, but I have a problem.

I believe that I can only use 2.53 of my 4GB ram.  Why is that.  I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and there seems to be a problem.  Is it my mother board.  is there a way to change it.

Here I have a screen shot of the System Information and Task Manager.

The motherboard I have is a Foxconn a7vmx-k

I need help.  I wish to get this fixed before I install the 4850 I got yesterday.  I hope someone knows what to do.  I'm going to ask at guru3d, and look some more online for answers but I doubt I can find them.

Thanks

You're reading it wrong. See where it says "Total Physical Memory". That's how much memory you have.

Available Physical Memory is the portion of memory that is not currently in use - in other words, it's available.

Check your startup file under programs. See how many things besides the operating system are running after booting up.

If you want to verify, type in "dxdiag" in the search box on the Start Menu and hit the Enter key. This is DirectX Diagnostics.

You also might want to censor out some of the information in your first screenshot. Most notably the System Name and the User Name. Posting that type of info on public forums is a bad idea.

With 3GB? What is your current RAM configuration? And what was your configuration with the 3GB?

    i.e. two 2GB sticks

Also, did you get the same model for all sticks of RAM? This is important because different models can have different timings, even if you get the same brand, you can still end up with two sticks of RAM that have different timings.

You physically have 4096 MegaBytes of RAM. Usually the numbers that are displayed for amount of RAM in use is rounded off to some degree, because of the conversions and complexities of Bytes and bits. A bit is a single digit. A Byte is eight bits. And it only gets more confusing from there.

As long as your computer is telling you that you have 4GB or 4096MB of RAM, then your computer is (technically) utilizing 4GB or 4096MB of RAM.

If you're having issues after having installed new RAM, you should run MEMTEST (Google it). Assuming that the timings all match up on the different sticks of memory that you put in your computer, then the only problem would be faulty RAM. In which case you'll have to RMA it. Other wise, if you did not match up the timings on the sticks of RAM, then get RAM with matching timings. Additionally, Dual Channel is the best.

When I had 3gb of ram it was 2 sticks of ram.  The motherboard can only physically use 2 sticks of ram because there is only 2 slots.  2gb max each because 4gb is the max possible on the motherboard.

Both rams are identical by what i have read.  They are both Samsung 2gb sticks ddr2-pc6400 800mhz.  But on CPU-z one of the sticks of ram does not show the name of the stick of ram.

Both says the frequency is 400mhz, 6.0 cas latency, 6 ras to cas, 6 ras precharge, 18 tras, 24 trc, and 1.8v

they physically look the same with the same stickers, the black memory things on the ram are the same, they are the same size and speed, but its running on single channel also.

im gonna try to look in the bios, buti'll do the memtest like you said first

MEMTEST can take a long time, just a forewarning. You might want to start it before you go to sleep. As far as I can tell, it sounds like everything should be working. It is possible that something may need to be changed in the BIOS, but if it's showing up in Windows as 4GB, then it should be working.

I hope Loki hops in on this because he's the hardware guru, I'm a software guy. Otherwise, I highly recommend OverClock.Net. Some very intelligent hardware guys over there.

op!your system as 4 gb ,the cached is probably for graphic card ,os etc so you end up with 2. something witch is what i got i can do pretty much everything i need if you plan to deactivate paging file then you might need 6 or 8 gig of ram but it will be a bigger ressource hog!
