I've been a member of There.com since early beta stages 2003, it's been a lot of fun for me in the past.
I do not play anymore because of worlds like Second Life, however CEO Michael Wilson announced that There.com is shutting down on the 9th of March 2010.
I just wanted to be sure that everyone on MMORPG that played this game is aware of this.

It has really been a bad year for MMORPG's, and hopefully the new games coming out this year will be having more luck at this.
Edit: I myself will be going on There.com to make some final pictures of what I have on this game, having played this game a lot in the past I want to leave some old memories. I will probably share the gallery of pictures here on MMORPG.com.

I'm not surprised, actually. I've always thought Second Life was much better, because at least people were kind enough to make freebie clothes for people who don't want to spend money. On There.com on the other hand, if you were a free player, you'd only get 5 minutes to try clothes other than the starter clothes. I admit that I really did like it though, when it was still based on MTV, but now, I barely even stayed 30 minutes before I quit.
I admit that I've never explored enough of There.com to see how the roleplaying is like, but I was under the impression that Second Life was better for roleplaying. There.com was more of a socialising platform than a roleplaying or typical MMO type of game.

I agree, however There.com was my "home" before Second Life really reached out to the world. I was on Second Life the same year as There.com, just a few months later. But I have many many good memories with old friends who I have met on There.com.
There.com used to be a world for ages 18+ at first, then changed to PG13. At the time it was 18+ I had many friends with who I talked on voicechat and most I am still in contact with outside of the world.
I'm just glad There.com has existed, as I have probably learned a lot "There". Like speaking english fluently just by talking on voicechat, you can't even tell that I'm from the Netherlands just because I used to speak to people on There.com on voicechat often.

OMG i knew the ingame population took a hit during the summer of 09 but this news is shocking. See what happens when you turn a game all pg 13 and pander to the kids you lose the adult player base, you know the base that actually spends money and care about the game. i feel bad for the guys who spend thousands of real money ingame to see all that stuff go poof . this is sad news as i am a player and ill be loosing all my stuffs. my ingame name was 'unregister' lol. Next to fall will be anarchy online and war hammer .

Same here, I made quite a few friends on There.com as well, though sadly, I never bothered to keep in contact with them outside the game. I guess it's probably my natural paranoia, but I'm suspicious of having my internet social life and my real social life meet. However, I will say that some of my best MMO memories actually happened on There.com. I remember having dancing parties with my friends, driving all over the place on whatever transportation we can find for free, trying out new clothing to get extra money, taking part in events that helped us get even more freebies... it really was extremely fun.
I guess I stopped logging on because eventually, even I got tired of it. When I finally returned, it really wasn't the same anymore, and it disappointed me. That's probably why I'm not too surprised that it's being shut down, though now that I think of it, I do feel sad about it. Maybe they could learn from their mistakes and come up with a new social world that could rival Second Life.

Yeah, you're probably right. Anarchy Online has a really low player base, I've also been playing Anarchy Online since around 2003. I currently have a 219 engineer tradeskiller on it, when I was active I was one of the only tradeskillers available.
Not too sure about Warhammer Online however, when I played it last year a lot of people were still playing.
However, I did play the European version and not the American one.
I'm quite excited about APB (All Points Bulletin) I hope it will be as good as the trailers make us believe it is.
I will be soon making a site for There.com, to remember people what the game was like, I'm making a lot of in-game footage for the last couple of days that it is going to be online for.

What a sad day it is i really don't have any thing to go too now . Second life is just ugly compared to there.com sure they have better looking skill and hair but there.com had better form and flow and was more realistic to me. weird thing is they were having fun banning people for using profanity even though there is only 6 days left..
Wow. I've been away from this game for a bit because I had problems with the client when I got Vista. It's weird that the game is actually just shut down as of yesterday. I actually was checking out the comments because I planned to install the game again today.
