I quit playing Aion a month after it got released due to numerous reasons which were basically this:
from ~lvl25 you pretty much have to grind your way through 25-50% of that exp lvl cos you would have run out of quests.
The Abyss just wasn't any fun, yes its pvp and i like pvp, but why stick quests in there cos 9 times out of 10 i got ganked by a mob of 10+ rinse and repeat until i log out cos i can't be arsed..
Also its a Korean game i believe so if you don't like grinding for upto 50% of that lvl exp then you will really hate this game, grinding just isn't fun in any game but when you got to grind for 50% of your lvl then thats bad.
Now admittedly those were the problems i had when i quit a month after launch and they may have changed somewhat but i still believe that grinding is the biggest bug bear of Aion, if you like pvp buy Aion but be prepared for tedious amounts of grinding and ganking, if you want pve LOTR.

you were ganked by mobs?
but ya, what others have said. Aion is for PvP players and Lord of the RIngs is for PvE people and/or roleplayers. Aion gets very competitive in the upper levels, Lotro not at all competitive.
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
I've played both. As others have said, if you're looking for PvP, then Aion is the way to go. If you want a more relaxed experience, then go with LOTRO.

PvP can be a reason I buy a game, but it is not a requirement for me in all games.
I still play LOTRO and I stopped playing Aion. If the above statement were reversed this statement might also be reversed.
But in the end I don't think I would buy Aion for the PvP, while I did find most parts of it fun. In order to have fun you have to grind so much that the purchase is not favorable IMO. I am not a fan of PvE in order to PvP. The best way to get PvP points is to PvE fort guards to put it in a nutshell.
I played Aion for 5 months and now I am playing LoTRO. I have a 49 Templar in Aion with half a level to go and for the life of me, I can't get myself to log on and play.
Aion has a lot of potential but it lacks content. It is also more "grindy" than LoTRO. This may sound harsh but I don't believe Aion has a soul or an identity. AT THIS POINT IN TIME, it seems really shallow. I'd wait till 2.0 before playing Aion. It's due out in the next few months.
As for LoTRO, it is probably the most underrated MMO on the market. The quests are go kill X for Y drop, just like any other MMO BUT, they are beautifully written. The Book/Story arcs are brilliantly designed. The game is fun and challenging. You never feel frustrated. The first Dungeon in LOTRO I did (The Great Barrow) is better designed than most of the current dungeons in Aion.
Aion has a lot of room to grow while LOTRO has been out for three years. It also depends on if you prefer PvE or PvP. Aion is primarily a PvP game with some end game PvE as well, but nothing special. LoTRO is purely a PvE game with a little PvP on the side (called Monster Play).
I'd recommend trying to get a free trial with LOTRO and seeing if you like it. The graphics are dated but they do have a hi rez DircectX 10 version out that looks nice.
I do not believe Aion has a free trial, so trying it out will cost you money.
I've played both. As others have said, if you're looking for PvP, then Aion is the way to go. If you want a more relaxed experience, then go with LOTRO.
This, because of the open PvP (PvPvE) you won't be able to fully enjoy the game if you wish to 100%-guaranteed-never-PvP (yes there are no PvP areas but you'll avoid like 75% of the game areas if you wish to avoid PvP).
On the other side, LOTRO does PvE greatly, it's simply the best PvE around for many.

Yes LOTRO does trump Aion pve. Part of this is because it is a beloved IP but also because the quest writing integrates with the main story and the world far better than most games.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
LotRO for me, no doubt. Best PVE game out in the wilds. Played Aion as well. But after that game, no asian games for me. It's just a grind, but PVP is alright tho. And vision trailer looks very good.
Want to play LotRO again, but Fallen Earth is just way too addicting to give up.
LotRO was far more enjoyable. Unless you are the type that like going around ganking the other faction while they fight mobs. The PvE, exploration and leveling in LotRO is incredible (at least the first time through the game). It feels like it has more quests than WoW. At the time I played I think your quest log could hold 40 quests and I couldn't clear them quickly enough to prevent deleting them when the next batch of 20 quests rolled in.
On the other hand the combat and animations in Aion are way more responsive and fluid than in LotRO. It really takes some getting used to and was ultimately the reason I left LotRO.
Aion is a grindfest with ganking...er, wait what part of that is fun exactly? The game may be beautiful, and the combat may not be the worst out there, but overall it's a lot less fun than LOTRO.

Aion is a great game if you enjoy PvP. However, the PvE side of the game is really bad. At lower levels it isn't really a problem but when you get to the higher end of the game quests become rather sparing and what is available is really generic or even grindy within itself.
LotR obliterates Aion far as PvE goes. There is so much more depth, quality, and availability in questing and story in LotR compared to Aion. The only problem with LotR though is when it comes to PvP the game is a joke. So it really boils down to what you're looking for in a game far as how much one will enjoy either of these games. However, even if you do enjoy PvP you may not like Aion because you cannot level through PvP so you're forced to partkake in the game's lackluster PvE content to obtain the bulk of your leveling quota. Really bad design for a game that focuses so much on PvP.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
Aion has both solid PVE and PVP gameplay. Lotro has solid PVE but terrible PVP play.
It is pointless to complain about grinding because grinding is inevitable. In lotro you will also reach a point where you will be doing the same thing over and over again. Developers can not develop content faster than players can play through.
Aion has a very unique setting. It looks very different from other mmorpgs and it has an excellent art style. You never know what to expect in terms of world and monster design. Lotro on the other hand is a completely generic fantasy setting. Now i'm sure some Lotr fan is looking to come in and say that lord of the rings existed first, that is irrelevant. Lotro was late to the party when games like WoW and EQ2 already provided a high fantasy setting.
Another bonus is that all content in Aion will be free of charge while Lotro charges for expansion packs.
Aion isn't a beacon of originality, but its unique setting is what makes it stand out. Lotro on the other hand does little that World of Warcraft doesn't do better.
Comparing these games is like comparing two different classes of automobile, one is a sportscar the other an SUV. They both have things to like, they both have things not to like.

PVE & Great stories and quests

PvP & some grinding required
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
If you like pvp, then you go with Aion, otherwise you can't be LOTRO.
I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.
LotRO has a free trial.
Not sure if Aion does yet.

If your into PVE lotro its makes anything PVE you encounter in aion look like it was added on as a side note. Aion has much better pvp though.
