The LA Times is reporting that Bigpoint Games, which is co-owned by SyFy parent company NBC Universal, is developing a new MMOG based on the "Battlestar Galactica" IP. Based on the LA Times report, the game is said to be a free-to-play (item mall supported) browser-based MMOG, with a launch date set for August or September.

Ugh, a browser based game. I'm sorry, I know they are popular with a certain sect of gamers, but I cannot see myself ever playing one.
It's unfortunate, because I think a traditional MMO based on the BSG universe would be quite interesting.
Prax
browser based ? Item mall? Oh jeez...this could be a great MMO and instead it's going to be browser based and item shop crap??
A little excited by the title. Then read "will be out this fall" and was like WTF, and then I read Browser Based. Well that's crap. I think it will help bridge the gap between facebook gamers and the rest of us, but as for being something I would play... doubtful at best.
epic letdown
I am seeing these browser games pop up all over the place; of various types. Is this the ultimate in casual? Not sure, but just popped into Lord of Ultima myself www.lordofultima.com/en to see whats happening there. Im just curious b/c i cant see the lasting game-play value, but cant look away either.
...meh, item malls and browser-based, no hardcore justice for the sci-fi IP it seems...
I can't say it's a fail, but I can be *almost* sure I am not within the target audience for this MMO.
Ah WTH? Browser based? /sigh.....
Yet another grand IP ruined.
*sigh*
I call shenanigans.
This is just an early setup for a big April fool's day joke on the legions of BSG fans out there.
At least, it better be...
Bleh....
My hopes of playing an space mmog fades with every release of info, wth is wrong with the studios creating space-oriented mediocre games.
sigh
Well, it'll keep down developer costs. A couple guys with flash and java experience, and you too can create your own MMO with item shop!
Battlestar Galactica is part of a new wave of games playable entirely in a Web browser for "free".
It's not free if you pay for anything in the game. Which they obviously are trying to get you to do.
In such games, which are hugely popular in South Korea and China and growing fast in the West, players can choose to purchase additional items such as weapons, costumes and access to new levels.
Goes to show how markedly different our cultures are from the east.
The Battlestar Galactica game is being published by Bigpoint, in which Syfy parent company NBC Universal is co-owner of a majority stake.
NBC is a joke.
"With a browser game, you just get started when you launch," said Nils-Holger Henning, chief communications officer of Bigpoint. "We can constantly add features and content for people who are playing."
As if it was ANY different from a client server setup like WoW... oh wait. It isn't.
I smell incoming trash...
Unfortunately...
I'm a big ol' fluffy carewolf. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
I'm not a huge BSG fan (other than one of Wilma) but I am sort of looking forward to this. Something I can play on my lunch break, and play with people who don't have gaming PC's sounds interesting to me. Though I can empathize with people who want a full scale MMO for the IP, for me a more D&D style RPG type role player, this does have some appeal.
Meh,whilst I loved the latest BSG series,I don't think it would make a good hardcore MMO if based on the events int he series,it's just not a great setting for an MMORPG IMO.Maybe if the based it on the first Cylon war it would be doable. But how do you simulate a lone fleet of transport ships with one battlecruiser defending it fleeing into ever changing unknown space from an overwhelming enemy force in a MMO design without it becoming unprofitable to develop and maintain?I would love if someone could pull that off though heh.
Ah Well I guess this means there wills till be no good games based on the series lol.
Thank god it is going to be browser based. I would be more pissed at them ruining the IP (Based off the ORIGINAL series... You know... where Starbuck was a PIMP and not a women?) on a grand scale than on this little thing.
How about we let Cryptic develop it instead? It will still be released at the same time. /sarcasm

First thought: Cool! I love BSG, a really good BSG MMO would rock!
Second thought: Browser based? Paaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssssssssssss...
I am disappoint.
A Serenity game was in the works years ago. I think they dropped development on it. Would've been great to see. Firefly was awesome!
Remember this scene? "Darn."

seems like a huge waste of a great IP.
i too am very disappointed they opted for the cheap and easy browser based/item mall option
That being said Runescape was browser based and was a pretty decent game (could certainly hold your attention longer than most browser games). What I am interested in is how MMO like they will make it.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
GDC 2010: Battlestar Galactica MMO Announced
YAY!, finaly, been hoping for one for some time now.........
free-to-play (item mall supported) browser-based MMOG, with a launch date set for August or September
Ehum...what? Free to......browser-b.....launch August..........
Don't think my hopes will be justified, but then again I am sort of getting used to these IP's being a fraction of what they could be in the MMORPG genre
More info about the BG-MMO
Players will be able to choose to play as cylons or humans in a constant
struggle to control the universe or just survive its perils. A blend of
tactical space combat, exploration, and mission-based gameplay will provide a
diverse experience. The dramatic missions will define the game's overall
storyline, enabling the player to delve into mysteries of the Battlestar
universe. Battlestar Galactica Online will create a new standard for web
games, with beautiful 3d graphics and innovative game mechanics bringing a
new level of game play to browser based MMOG. Assets from the television
production will be integrated into the game to deliver an even more authentic
experience.

At first I read "free-to-play" and thought oh noes.
Then came the "browser-based" and the game died.
ROTFLMAO!
Heh heh heh eh.... what?
This was serious?
Darn.
OK, I first thought this would be some kind of advertisement for the show. Mot of the browserbased MMO type games are like this. However, the show is over.
So, WTF?
Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.
