MMORPG.com's Carolyn Koh took Square Enix's new fantasy MMORPG Fantasy Earth Zero for a test drive in this latest hands on preview focused on the game's combat gameplay.
Ever been dropped into a world not quite knowing what to expect? That happens rather often in media tours, especially early previews of games where the official site is only a teaser site, and the server is only going to come up for the tour. You download, install, patch and hope it gets done before the tour, while doing what research you can on the game. The media tour of Fantasy Earth Zero was little different. It was fast, quick impressions, perhaps a little chaotic and you know what? That’s how they are describing their battles.

Nice read, glad someone finally wrote about this game. But knight is really only good against other summons, its not good for structures at all.
I was very disappointed with the combat. There is such a huge delay between starting to attack and when the attack fires (not to mention travel time), that merely moving erratically (especially by spamming side step), can make you almost invincible.
This game is garbage, want to know why? Play it, speaks for itself.
Just from these two I wonder if you played the same FEZ I did.
straight up the game is really fun. Graphics are really bad though and sadly most people will take graphics over gameplay.
Same I want to know which FEZ you were playing on. In my FEZ knights were good against other summons or harassing miners not for destroying/damaging structures. The one that is good against structures would be giants or chimera(would be a waste if you didn't use the chimera against the keep though). The way you describe the Gates of Hades sounds like you revive dead players... you just summon a demon angel thing. Not really saying you are wrong with the Gates of Hades just that the way you worded is vague.
Combat was fluid and fast for me and I played it on my sucky laptop that can't play most 2004 games plus wireless network so uh maybe it's a problem from your net or pc
I stopped playing it because the controls are kinda weird and when I received some quests and gone in the quests window it didn't show were or who I needed to talk to so I kept on clicking on random npcs till I found out who it was.
My ping was great and I didn't notice any signs of lag. It's the design of the combat system itself that makes it clunky. It was most noticeable on sorcerers. The attack animation that has to go off before the spell fires takes about a half second. And if you change your aim during the animation, the spell still fires at the point you were aiming at at the beginning of the animation. And then, only after that there is the travel time of the spell. So spamming jump or sidestep makes you almost impossible to hit.
wow, they managed to repeat all the screw ups of asheron's call including dated graphics, spells that are trivial to dodge, and lousy clunky laggy combat.
Awesome.

IMHO, the game is great. I actually enjoyed an MMO that requires some sense of timing and skill. I don't mind backstepping as the landing is fairly predictable. Most people who enjoy cookie-cutter MMOs will not enjoy it, however.
Also, you'll want to turn the mouse sensitivity up. A lot.
Considering Asheron's Call had one of the best twitch-based PVP combat systems to grace any MMO, I would argue that the spells were no so trivial to dodge.
As for the graphics. Meh.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
This game is great, but after the last patch I'm unable to log in
"The battlefields are huge. Large enough to accommodate armies of 50 against 50."
This made me laugh; it seems 'MMO's' which go backwards in terms of graphics and number of PvP participants are to be congratulated.
I think this game could develop quite a fan base. The large scale battlegrounds are well designed. The idea of the five factions conquering each others territory by winning the battlegrounds is appealing because it encourages people to play to win and cooperate with each other. And the simple graphics allow the game to play well.
A lot of people are going to enjoy the different style of combat. And some will undoubtedly hate it. Killing someone is hard and takes practice and timing.
I quickly became a fan of this game. The first beta finished last night with the GM's arranging photoshoots in the capital cities and Im looking forward to the next beta.
Not to be the panzy of the group or anything but I must simply be honest.
I have have been beta testing mmo's for way to long and either my expectations are way to high or nearly any and every mmo is starting to turn out to be the same piss poor pot huffing grind fest. When I first looked at the game by a well known developer, with some pretty great games under their belt I was excited, thrilled.. and figured hey this may suck but at least it will suck and look good, ( sorta like my best friends girlfriend the night of prom..) however...
When I did take the time to download this game, login... the immediate disappointment slapped me up side the head and kicked me in the nuts several times over again before I began to weep in tears at the early signs of revamped failure. Not only had it turned out to be the ugly hidden sister of some well known actress, its control interface was about as original and innovative as a placebo version of viagra after 15 laps around a football stadium and a extra lengthy battle with a parapallegic midget.
Aside from controls and graphics, the dialog was worse than a B list science moving. bringing this C list fantasy from D straight to F. On top of this combine it with the loading screen every 5 steps between village hut A, then B, then C due to redundant piss poor modeling and texture variety and you have yourself a cute little 1997 mmo.
[Mod Edit]
QFT. I'm still a bit torn if I'm just overly jaded or if all the current generation betas are just trash. No wait, I'm not... they all largely trash.
The problem is everyone is just copying wow now, and wow copied eq and refined the gameplay. The major issue is they're not even making incremental improvements on gameplay anymore and in many cases are taking huge steps backwards. The game play needs to branch so we're not repeating the same exact game with a different skin... there are only so many thing that can be done sure, but the diversity of mmorpgs is dwindling to 'nil to none'. eq trash uo, wow trashed eq, etc... they really could stand to go back and steal some of the good ideas of uo and try to advance in that direction or even asheron's call (unfortunately a horrible looking game otherwise it would likely have done better.)
I'd give just about anything that isn't a cookie cutter repeat copy verbatim of the last game that sold well. Get some backbone and try something a bit new.

This game must be bad if a poster who joined in 2005 and has kept quite for five years decided to tell us how bad it is.
No its not 'FUN'. Its frustrating, laggy and badly realized.
The combat is so bad that those on the games forum that consider themselves pro make me laugh because the game mechanics are so broken that being uberl337 is probably sailing close to glitching.
The quest system is vague and poorly structured. PVE is dull and just an excuse to make cash which in itself takes ages.
Classes are imbalanced with 2H warriors being on the top and anything that is ranged right at the bottom coz they cant hit sh1t 9 times out of 10.
The fact that the reviewer only commented favourably on the Knight speaks volumes.
Might not be a bad game if the controls were better. I hate having to use my mouse to turn with my character. It might not be so bad if it was fluid but it's slow and choppy at best.
