Setting Up LAN. Noob Question

arctarusarctarus Member UncommonPosts: 2,581

Hi all,

Me and my friends gona set up a couple of pcs for lan gaming, in 1 of my friend home.

Just using some normal mid end thing ( core 2 pc).

Problem is, 1 of my friend say we need to buy a high-end server thing so that we can have a fast game play with no lag, but the other say just set up a work group thing will do.

So which is correct?

If i need a server, must it be the highest end? If not will it lag? What is the server for in a LAN gaming?

So can i buy only 1 game ( say counter strike ) and install in all the pcs? or do i need to buy 1 for each?

Please help.

Thanks!

    No need for any servers.

Just Ethernet crossover cable and two PCs with Ethernet ports (RJ45). If you connect more than two PCs, you might want to get a router instead and won't need crossover cable. If you already have a DLS modem, most of them can also act as a router. With the latter method you can both connect to the Internet and also play LAN games.

Officially you need to buy two games.

I want to highlight that you get right type of cable, just like thexrated said.

Btw I have hooked up 2 pc's directly using a non-crossover ethernet cable, I believe a lot of modern network adapters will have circuitry to autocorrect for using the wrong cable.

I see, thanks! Now is to get 5 non-crossover cables and a router, there's 5 pcs...

actually, if this is something you plan on doing regularly using a dedicated server is the way to go.  You dont need a work-horse of a PC, and can skimp on the graphics card opting for cpu and ram over gpu power.  I wouldnt say its necessary for you with your current number of players, but if you plan on having 8 or more PC's.. then it does become necessary.

If you need to get ethernet cables I'd suggest ordering them from http://www.monoprice.com, it's 1/5th the price that you'd pay at Best Buy. For routers, Linksys, Netgear, D-link have worked well for me, stay away from Belkin.

you will need a swtich board (for fast gaming)aside from that its pretty much plug and play!

    Hi Ray,

Can you please teach me what is the purpose for the server if i'm going for more than 8 pcs? What does the server do exactly in a LAN game?

    Thanks.

Hi noquarter, avery and drb, thanks! I'll check them out...
