We recently reported on a recent comment by EA CFO Eric Brown on how Star Wars: The Old Republic was EA's "largest development project ever."
Today, we've learned that EA management believes two million subscribers (or more) are possible for The Old Republic, and that in order to break even The Old Republic will require a little over one million subscribers, which, by the way, is pretty indicative of how large a budget The Old Republic has. This is all according to Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia who had recently attended a meeting with EA.
Bhatia on the EA meeting:
"earnings are somewhat depressed due to ongoing expenses of the Star Wars MMO, management has high hopes for this and believes 2M+ subs is possible."

Expectations are always dangerous. I just hope EA wont can this if it doesnt meet that quota. But I doubt it will, after all its not just EA, its LucasArts. And if they kept SWG alive until now, theres no way they would let TOR be shut down, no matter how bad it would get.

I'd have to agree. I'm a fan of the development team and the direction this game is going, but if it didn't do well, I think EA would be more likely to throw more money at it than shut it down.
Easy, they will have 1 million forsure in the first month and 2 million in a matter of months.
...ill be playing the game,
but biowares screwed...2 million? ...
I dunno, it does sound realistic. Not too much nor too little. I mean you never know, but so far it sounds like what I expect.

maybe they learned something from Warhammer? which I doubt very much. Its the same company that said Warhammer was doing good then fired the CEO afterward lol. SWTOR wont even have 250k sub if its just a single player mmo.
Let's stay realistic, please.
It will probably get a healthy number of subs if it doesn't screw important things up and might become an enjoyable MMO.
But 2 million subscribers? That would make it one of the most successful MMOs and I find that a bit hard to believe. There will probably a lot of people who buy at the beginning (maybe around 1 Million if the hype is big enough) and after the first month, the subs will decrease. If they get about 500k subs, I would call it a success.
Two Million! I wish I was a fly on the Wall when Smed Reads this!

Aslong as it has a solid polished base, good gameplay and a good amount of end-game it should be able to get 2 million subs. It cant be that hard. But most MMO's coming out these days either are way to buggy or lack endgame or both. And thats why people quit.
Lets see how it turns out. i dont think im gonna play this game myself, not my cup of tea. But intresting to see how it turns out.
I wonder how long they need to keep the 2 million subs though for making a profit, just a few months? years?
Maybe they only need 2 mill people to buy the game and sub for a month or two then they can go on with a smaller player base. i dunno.

They are probably betting on a lot of the ME/ME2 and DAO fans hopping on over to SWTOR too. If that's their thinking and it works out to be the case, than they probably could have two million easy.

High hopes for this mmo. But um.. throwing out expectations like that is not smart . Movie comapnies can do that to make intrest .MMO developers tho cant do that an expect people to try a game just because it was expensive to make.

Last year FFXI had 2 million subs.
SWTOR could definately do it. think about how every triple A game gets 1 million sales but only about 200k stay with the game.
If they can:
1. have great evolving star wars content while leveling
2. no lack of content
3. creative and innovative end game
4. great mingames and things to do when you dont feel liek combat or crafting. Social stuff.
This game could do it!
What is the time frame for those subs?
WoW needed 4 years to get about 5 mio subs(western market) and taking about 70% market share.
Such statements seems more stupid rather than ambitious
Its all speculation of course. But journalists already got to experience a hands-on preview of the game and the release is still at least a year away. And the journalists' experience was generally positive. This is a good sign. I dont remember any recent other major MMO letting play journalists this far before release with a positive preview as result.
But the 2mill subs? Who knows, it has Bioware and Star Wars attached to it, so it certainly will sell many boxes. Especially if you look at the positive coverage it already had. The whining is mainly from players that dont want a questbased MMO.
Lets face it, this is Bioware's first foray into MMO's but also they have created some of the most popular RPGs ever, personally i think it will either be a great success, or a giant flop, im going for greatness based on KOTOR 1 and KOTOR 2, and that bioware don't seem like idiots, EA and lucas arts on the other hand...

TBH I can see the launch of this being nasteh. There will be tons of people at launch that may not stick it out but, launch is going to be a serious bottleneck.
Once we get closer to launch date you will see some serious hype start up on this and some SW geeks ( myself included ) will be drooling over this game.
Regardless of your opinion on whether this will be a Online SP game or not. Launch will be HUGE!
Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.
Unless you are financially vested in the game, why does it matter how many subs?
I already shared my opinion on this in older threads. Even if this game turns out to be nothing more than kotor 3 with co-op (this being the worst case scenario of course) its still a win for me and for at least two of my friends that I play mmos with.
If you stand VERY still, and close your eyes, after a minute you can actually FEEL the universe revolving around PvP.
It will be interesting to see how the final product turns out. EA shouldn't count chickens before they are hatched. Success with paid for MMO's have not been that successful as of late.
Momo sucks, I have proof.
Think about it, 2 million subs could be 500,000 in the USA, 500,000 in the EU, and 1 million over the rest of the world (China? Korea?)
Key thing is: The game has to be fun for the casual player (See WoW). If they can make the game fun and have it be Star-Warsy, 2 million subs across the globe should be *cake*. Look at how a poorly designed Star Wars game did (and it's still going).
The people on this site seriously just live in theri own little worlds. Before Aoc came out it was gona have 1+ players, then by year 2 it was going to be 2-3 million, before WAR released, people on these forums kept saying and saying War will have 1 million players at launch, then anywhere between 2-8 million by year 2 and it would destroy wow, same with Aion, anywhere in the so called multiple millions.
Make no mistake about it, WAR was meant to be huge according to the userbase on this site, and many other sites, it was seriusoly meant to have millions upon millions of players according to the MADHATTERS on this site.
Like i said the people on this sie just live in their own little world, where they just imagine flights of fancy. next it will be guild wars 2, then Teera then final fantasy. Deluded is not even thr world for the people on this site.
Next it will be "think about it logically it could get this in the EU, that in the US and this in Asia". Yeah we all know what any game could get only need to look at the so called hardcore elitists that were going on for months and months telling everyone on this site how many millions WAR and Aion, and Aoc etc etc would get.
and in the 3rd month, 500K and sinking like a stone due to player dissatisfaction with the content.
Sure, it might not happen, but other than WOW and a few others this has been the pattern the past 5 years and hoping for better isn't the way to bet.
It could happen.....but you never know.

I think if any game has a chance to retain subscribers, this game will be it, if nothing else then for the story aspect. Seeing a drop in subscribers is a current trend though. I can't say how the majority of players will play this game, but I know I'll be subscribed for the first couple months at least.
