Project Natal & future of MMORPGs

SephastusSephastus Member UncommonPosts: 455

I was reading on a new (well... not so new) technology being used by microsoft for their gaming console: Project Natal.

The way it works, is that it has a set of cameras that reads your movements, facial expresions and other actions to use your entire body as the controller. Right now they are using it for fighting games, driving games, and the regular slew of sports games... but then I started thinking of how much more interesting this would make RPGs and specially MMORPGs.

Making actual physical movements to perform movements, attacks, spells ect. seems like it would make MMORPGs ever much more inmersive than they currently are. Add a physics engine and the possibilities are just about endless.

I have say, to this day stayed away from microsoft consoles, but, if a company does develop an MMORPG that utilizes project Natal, I will be one of the first ones in line to give it a shot. A properly developed game of this nature does seem like it would be awesome.

Cool for 14 to something age gamers. But I do not want to actually swing a sword, or run in front of my computer to play a game.

i remeber playing tekken in st louis that had that technology and it was horrible next to impossible to get it to do anything alot of it because of the limits of the controls

put it this way you try standing on your hands and whirling around like eddie and see how that works for ya

and all movemenets have to fall over the camera or it wont register it as a control bright lights can cause it to glitch out so play with the lights off unless they put the cameras on rails to follow movement i dont see it happening in a home console

barely worked well in an arcade setting

I doubt it would work for MMOs, too much complexity behind 'em. You'd get tired fast of so many movements you'd need to do.

Me neither. Well it's quite funny for a short session of play (iE playing a Wii-game with friends). But sometimes i spend hours playing an MMO and really don't want to be exhausted after 3 hours PvPing / raiding / whatever. ;-)

For the purpose of getting exhausted, there is sports you can do.

God.. Think of how it would be in a weekend session of 18 hours :o

I think it would be awesome if a game used it. But you'd also need a choice to play without it. This kind of thing would work for Darkfall really well, as long as there was some way to aim arrows and spells.   Yes you'd be tired at first, but  I think it could be possible to do raids and long hours of gameplay eventually.

The only problem I see is a lot of MMO gamers just want to relax and they say RPG's are about stats and not reflexes. Lets face it were a bunch of lazy people. So I don't really see anything really taking off anytime soon.

If it were optional I think I'd use it. Right now, I end up breaking my enjoyable long MMOing by going for a jog so I can stay sexy. If i could just hit my f12 key and really run from Orklands to Wolfys it would rock.

Having to jump around when playing a game ? .... just....  no..... please refer to all things wii to get an idea of what this really is and in what way it will be used.

project natal is nothing.   microsoft is a marketing force, not a I+D force.  just copy other people work, and pretend to be a leader announcing "flying cars" with 50 years in advance.

    just ignore then.

how do you kill something that has no life? easy you make their fat asses get out from their computer chairs and make them do basic movements.

i mean come on people how hard is it to do a sword swinging motion? or raising your arm like your blocking with a shield. or doing a basic movement with your arms and saying a command .... <waves arms> "HEAL!"

I think it would be cool as hell to have a MMO on natal.

the Evil Raider that outgears you and makes you cry for welfare epics on the forums.

I would be fine with using my body for avatar movement if I was in something as cool as, say, a holodeck in Star Trek. Or something virtual in that neighborhood.

But I have no interest in using my body to control an avatar that is simply a cartoon on a flat computer screen.

If these are anything like Wii controls, no thank you.

I can't seem to get that thing to do what I think I'm doing when I'm flailing those controls around.

Natal/Wii and all the other motion detecting tools for gaming consoles are fun at times but they are not half as good as my mouse and keyboard.  If you have a long day at work you want to come home and relax not do flips :P

Natal isn't going to last for regular games, much less MMO's. Having to move to control the game with no physical reference will be extremely annoying. Also, MMO players tend to love to play for long periods at a time. That alone will kill any Natal dreams.

it would certainly stop retarded bunny hopping...

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

I think it would be awesome to play a MMO with natal and a goggle display. I actually had a dream I was doing that before and it was epic.
