Warhammer is dead (?)

ElikalElikal Member UncommonPosts: 7,912

Ok this is rumor and hearsay from third sources, so don't blame me if its a hoax, but usually reliable channels informed that Warhammer Online will be set to mere maintenance mode. No more patches or updates and a final server merge.

""Apparently in March we will have a final server merger, and the game is going into a state that is being refered to as maintence mode. This means the game will recieve weekend attention as promised, but no further updates. Doing this is an attempt to save the game from cancelation due to poor Q4'09 and Q1'10 profits at EA.

Warhammer had so much potential but it is this person's opinion that EA ruined it by holding Mark Jacobs balls at release, and then handing over the project to perhaps the worst development team in MMO history. What is most surprising is how long it took for the EA/Mythic team to tell the truth about plans for the game. Perhaps EA will learn from their mistakes and get out of the MMO business, leaving it to the professionals."

The game is already in maintenance mode. Everyone knows eventually there would be a final server merge and the game would die. But its not dead, nor will it ever die. It'll just be another DAoC.

Well, considering that entire quote is full of misconceptions I wouldn't put much weight in it.

it has been in maintenance mode since June last year after LotD, anyway maintenance mode doesnt mean zero patching development, just that they will be few and far between.

lack of updates or even expansions were out of question since 6 months ago anyway. most people think that the only reason why this hasnt been canned yet is to not create a negative atmosphere surrounding EA's next title, SWToR.

Well there was a german version of that quote floating around, which was full of spelling errors (the kind of spelling errors you see constantly in MMORPG chat channels and you get flamed for if you point them out, but that still a mature literate person would never do).

Now if the german one is claimed to be the official one and the english one a translation of that, then that would obviously mean it's fake, because then it wouldn't be full of these errors. If however the german one is the translation and the english one is supposed to be the original... well, then the translater was just... not that great.

    Anyway:

I personally have my doubts about such news when they ain't really official. People always try to  bash other games and make up stuff, so why should it be true. On the other hand, I wondered since a while why there has been no announcement of new content. I mean, MMORPGs are about changes, improvement and becoming better in general. They are about promising stuff, new dungeons, arenas, classes and whatnot. So not promising any of that is really weird.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

    Ok I have a question.

What do they mean by the highlighted part? What company did they hand the project over to?

    Also what did Mark do?

And what EA have to do with it all?

    I dont understand

That link does not link directly to a post by anyone at EA or Andy. It goes to another board where someone else quotes Andy. There is no evidence that Andy at EA said any of those things.

This topic needs to be reported as false until proven otherwise.

It refered to the team within Mythic. I think that meant the developers, which holds some water, since its widely known that all talent Mythic had when DAOC was at its prime left the building long, long ago.

    Also what did Mark do?
overpromise and underdeliver. apparently he is also the master mind behind the extremely lame crafting system
And what EA have to do with it all?
Rumor goes that WAR needed a second delay and EA said "uh uh,no, release what you got now".

anyway i agree with the above poster, if that post was really Andy's, there would be a source, not a repost of a repost.

or, well...... (/puts tinfoil hat).........maybe that post actually existed and it was deleted from the board...

truth be told, Andy has been MIA for in the official boards, vn vault and warhammer alliance for quite a long time now.

IMO it will server merge to 2 servers. 1 pvp and the other pve. It will hang around for a while with little work being done to it. I dont know the server numbers but when i played people were leaving in droves.

(BBBBBWWWWAAAAHHHH fires plunger at Mythic for ruining warhammer Ip)

All my opinions are just that..opinions. If you like my opinions..coolness.If you dont like my opinion....I really dont care.

While this wouldn't really be surprising in any way the rumour sounds unreliable.

And I really wonder how much EA actually hold MJ "by the balls". But it is true that the post release team could have done a better job with patching in stuff, they should have focused more on making a good endgame and less with adding more scenarios and special events.

WAR was already dead in the water when MJ took warhammers mechanics and threw them out of the same window he threw the lore through. Just the idea of levels in a warhammer game turns off millions of potential customers and one thing I (as a player of GWs Warhammer) know is that few of the warhammer fans actually play Wow. MJ should have focused on getting those players in instead of stealing players from Wow.

Mythic aimed the game on the wrong kind of players and while the game isn't hopeless it just isn't good enough to take chunks from Blizzard and GWs fans get really upset when they see what Mythic made of our gameworld. I hope someone else makes a Warhammer MMO in the future, and someone that actually played the tabletops and RPG game. It is clear that no one at Mythic ever played any GW game with possibly the exception of Blood bowl (which would have been a great scenario).

If the game wouldn't be a Warhammer game and it would have a better endgame I might consider paying to play it but they did to my favorite IP what Cryptic did to the Star trek IP.

    Thats a illogical argument.

    TT-->Video Game != TT

Sorry, but many people dont seem to get that. A Video game format of a TT is not going to be the same unless it was just a 3D graphical TT game.

But MMOs cant be balanced on TT (Especially a PvP game which Warhammer was hyped to be)

War died because it followed WoW hate imo. I saw this clearly from beta years. Fans wanted Anti-WoW, but that doesnt work in a Theme Park MMO.

ALL THE TOP THEMEPARK MMOs are PvE focused for a reason. WoW has made this mandatory feature in Theme Park MMOs, and that’s to have decent PvE.

War main focus was to do PvP. In the end, that would be a dead grind for endgame logically, having only PvP for Endgame.

I agree lvls is a killer in a game like War though.

way War was designed, ether the early lvls of the game would be dead or the end game lvls would be dead, since the whole game is a PvP format. What Mystic tried to do was reverse WoW’s format of

    Dungons+PersistantPvE=LvLing outcome into

PvP instances+PersistantPvP=Lvling. And this fail short

    No.

It isn't dead, but it is definitely reeling and not doing wonderfully.  I am playing it again now and really there isn't a night you can't login to T2, T3 or T4 and find fights to get into.  The main problem to me is that they made it a 2-way war and often times it is just one side completely rolling the other side.  Also they completely butchered up the lore.

I don't see Warhammer making a big recovery but I don't see it going away anytime soon either.  I sure wish they had used some of the good parts of DaoC.

    /sigh

What i really want to see is a turn based, online version of Warhammer 40K. Make the armies fully customizable, use well implemented matching tool, and put in a campaign mode to enable you to grow and advance your armies.

Just some tool posting things like it was Andy saying it, there's no way Andy would talk like that. Half the quote is clearly disgruntled player talk, and not some insider's perspective.

I would have put this post in the Rumor Room due to how unsubstantiated it is.

I figure since we're in mid-March and there's been no announcement of server consolidation that's one part already discredited.

    SLAP....

There is no game out there that even come close to DAOC

While I don't think the quote is real, I do think the message it is speaking isn't that far from the truth.

I just can't overlook EA's involvement in this game and their love of cancelling mmos.  The only saving grace for that might be that EA doesn't want the negative press right before they release their star wars mmo.

Perhaps this will give the developers some time to perform the impossible and turn the game around.

Warhammer could have been 100% stable and bug free and it would still have failed due to utterly horrible design.
