How does ranking work on mmorpg.com?

MMO.MaverickMMO.Maverick Member CommonPosts: 7,619

I don't know if this is the right spot to ask this question, but couldn't find any other section that was more suitable.

I'm wondering, how does the ranking system work here? I'd presumed it was linked to the time you've been a member of this site, or the number of posts. But now I see that I'm a four-star 'hardcore member' (?!), while at the same noticing that there are a large number of people who have a larger number of posts or are far longer members of this site that have less ranking: I only joined this March and have 60 posts.

So, what is the base for this ranking system? Just wondering image

It is linked to how active you have been the last X weeks. If you go away for a while, your rank decreases. If you log in every day, and do some posts, your rank is increasing.

think the rank is decreasing if you doing something "bad" too :)

That is a disturbingly vague concept.

'Doing something bad' is a very general description and means it could happen before you know it image

They explain it here http://www.mmorpg.com/faq.cfm time spent on site, quality of posts etc.. I don't know how they figure the quality of posts part, I know I wouldn't want that job, but theres the place they expalin it all.

Might have something to do with if you don't say how long you have played some games. I've played wow to 80. Aoc to top lvl.

Warhammer to 4 lvl 40's. but "how the hell" do I know how long I played each game and "why should I care?"

you mean the moderator himself increases ranking?

    I see....

Well I read the FAQ, and still couldn't figure out their criteria on what a "Good Post" would be, and what a filler post would be...

Sometimes short answers might be far more relevant than 100 blast lines of opinion and crying, so really, they shouldn't do it on "lenght" if thats what they use to measure post quality...

I, myself, and much more of a reader, and don't really care about this kind of stuff.... Just this time I got really curious hehe :D

The admins and even MikeB will tell you they have no idea how the ranking is calculated, but from my experience I've observed.

    1) Logging in daily and posting definitely increases your rank. It isn't quantity, many posters with like 70-100 posts show up as 5 star elites.

    2)  Having your post moderated (edited) or deleted will definitely knock you down a full star, though the ranking results appear to be averaged over about a month time so it will take a week or two to drop, and a week or two to recover from a moderation event.

    3)  I can't verify this next one, but it seems to me you get boosts to your rankings for clicking on different parts of the site, i.e. don't just visit the forums, but check out the OP ED pieces, the blogs, the pictures and who knows,  maybe even the contests and ads, but I never do that.  Voting for your favorite games (or slamming those you hate) also may have an impact.

    4) Regarding post length, thats a tough one, but it seems to me that if you do a lot of one sentence/paragraph posts your rankings can start to slip, but if you have at least 2 paragraphs with a few sentences in them each your ranking rise steadily. Doesn't seem to be any bonus points for creating TLDR posts.

Well I guess I must be doing something horribly wrong lol. I have been a loyal member since 2004 and have rarely missed logging into the site for even a day. I was at almsot the highest rank but am now at almost the lowest. I am more of a lurker than a poster when it comes to the forums but still I find it very confusing when there are members with much less time and fewer posts that are ranked way higher. Oh well I still love the site and will continue coming to it untill the day I can no longer use a computer lol,  cheers!

Actually the ranking is calculated monthly and seems dependant on how much one posts in that period or how long the posts are.

I had lost a star at one point (and "no" I don't care how many stars I have, I've never cared about forum ranking) and as a test made more and longer (though tried to keep them relevant) posts for that month. Suddenly my star came back.

Well as I said I still love the site and will continue coming here regardless hehe. Also if posting matters I am hosed as I don't post often. Someone usually says what I am thinking any way and puts it much better than I could lol.
