This is my 3rd time trying EQ2. In the past i have chosen not to subscribe for reasons varying from spending my time in the wrong starter town (one that was particulairly boring) to having a less than able system to run the game properly.
Being in a "mood" for an epic "collector" type RPG with a combat system that requires a bit of strategy i started to hear the character selection screen music of EQ2 slowly build in my head. With a new rig (mid range 4 cores gtx 260 8gig dd2 ram) and the urge to do more than try ti hit endgame asap i decide to really give EQ2 a good try.
Still being on a trial (i dont have the ability to use any global type channels right?) and full of questions, ive decided i might have better luck here in asking those questions.
1. Should i expect a laggy experience and a cool graphics card? While i whole heartedly agree with EQ2's approach to customization of everything, i cant seem to find a setting that runs proper. I dont feel i should be lowering texture resolution with what equipment i have (and run a 1440X900 resolution so i should see better framerates than a higher res on max) A "cold" graphics card means the game isnt using it properly. Im not sure if its my setting or what however. Ive tried resetting defaults ect. (oh and how do i see framerates on my screen in game?)
2. Is the only server with a lowbie population the crowded pvp server? Look i love ffa pvp, but all ive see are pvp tweaks in large groups and stealth rouge tweaks. I have yet to see one, remotely good pvp fight. Ill stick with the server, but if there is a good pve server that wont require me RPing and typing in old english i might consider starting there. I have a feeling this game is packed with endgame players and little inbetween. I prefer the pvp server, i just want to know is this what it will be like the whole game, if so ill consider a pve perhaps.
3. Im having difficulty really settling in on a class. Since i want to actually play the game, i dont want to get 30 level into it to find my class has no roll in a group, or is a joke in pvp.
Im considering between a wizard and warlock, does a warlock do better in the pvp enviroment? Or should i stick with the obvious dd advantage of the wizard? Is there a raid preference?
A defiler.... will i be a heal slave in a group? viable in pvp? I like the curse/weaken/some dd magic with a pike as melee, but is this more a healing class? Raid friendly class?
A warden... again, are the needed for raids, do the do decent in pvp (in the right hands of course)
I remember loving the shadowknight or whatever the last time i played, only to learn that later on it does pretty bad damage and cant tank very well. They havent changed that class for the better have they?
Any advice would be great, thank.

I tried EQ2 first on a sub-par system and it ran horribly, so I gave it a break until I got a new rig and though I could run the game on high settings, it still did not perform up to my liking. I think the game has amazing graphics, but too prone to bugs and anytime I ran through certain halls in the dark elf capitol, high shadow settings dc'd me. that created a problem for me since all my toons were localized in Neriak, sharing a mansion that I put tons of time, creativity, and plat into. I really enjoyed the options it offered in customizing player homes. But I personally got way more lag and bugginess than I felt should happen.
I also began on the PvP server when I started but quit at lvl 20 because of the same problems you mentioned and rerolled on Antonia Bell (that may be spelled wrong) a RP pve server. Rp did not seem required, even on the RP server, and I rarely saw much old english used in chat, if any at all. I cannot really say much else about the pvp server, as I left at lvl 20, so it could, or could not improve at higher lvls but honestly, I did not see it happening and never regretted leaving the pvp server. Oddly enough, I really love to pvp but i didn't see much balance to it, as most battles were won by the giant mass of shrunken players running at me in large packs. I can however add that Antonia Bell (mispelled?) was a great place to play with a decent to possibly great community depending on the guild you join, if any.
SK's to my knowledge are great in both tanking and DPS. Mine was a lvl 50 (highest was a 75 wiz) and the time i played (close to a year ago) SK's were considered the FOTM. As far as Wiz vs Warlock, its more a preference of single target nuke vs AOE. both were considered valued dps when i was playing.
Yeah losing interest very quickly with the pvp server. Im going to need more than 10 levels to get by bearings straight with this game. Gets quite fustrating to get ganked every 3-10 min by some tweaked hunter or rouge class. The master crafted equipment and AA farmed characters are way too much for any new player starting out. It sucks since i love a ffa pvp enviroment, i never really last long term without it.
Is there any type of pvp on the pve servers? any events or guild vs guild or something?
So the RP server is the way to go? I think ill roll there now.
Oh, any info on defilers? Just a healing class, or more dd/utility? Id like to roll a warden or a defiler. and see how that goes for 20 or so.
Shadowknights are good. Too good. Too many people roll SK.
Fury has higher DPS than Warden.
Defiler is fun to play, not sure how good of DPS they are.
If you roll a healer, like in any game, you will be expected to cast heals.
Most classes have something to offer a group.
In PVP, if you want to solo, roll a stealther. You can't go wrong with either of the Bards, people need them in groups, they can stealth and deal good damage, and they have tons of buffs (I think some minor heals too, not sure).
Here's a good resource for info on the EQ2 classes: http://eq2.stratics.com/php-bin/show_content.php?content=26248
Also, TenTonHammer has tons of guides that are very useful: http://www.tentonhammer.com/eq2/guides

Thanks, thats what i was kind of looking for.
Since too many roll SK, i will not.
Of course i expect to heal with a healing class, however i dont want every group up to fall on me as the healer, if you know what i mean. I have no objections to being the secondary healer, as i would expect witha class that can heal.
So far, its a toss up between defiler and wizard or warlock as my main. Actually its really up to a wizard or warlock. I like the warlocks style and aoe's but the wizards DD makes tearing though mobs very fun.
Very helpful post with the links and all..
Ok Antonia Bayle has the highest population and the most lag, it is also debatable if it is a friendly server or not.
Crushbone is the 2nd most populated PVE server, other good servers are Najena (the unofficial pacific server), Permafrost also has a decent population, Lucan de Lere the other RP server has a good reputation and also a good population. Unrest is supposed to be The raiding server but I dunno about that.

Well chatting with people in (bear with me i dont know full names of servers and towns yet) starter town N something (evil side wellspring searing char ect) mentioned the rampant ganking by tweaks was largly on that map alone. I rolled a fury on TD and they were right, only its a complete ghost town.
This was the problem i had on crushbone, only on every starter map.
Perhaps i just deal with being fodder every 3-10 min and go where the people are on this pvp server im on (the heavy load one).
My next burning issue is what class to play. Rolling new characters to test the water is getting old, i remeber my inability to really feel like a particulair class was a keeper and my lack of a proper computer system and card (problem there solved now) mixed with either ghost towns or gank fests, is what lead me to finish out my trial but no subscribe.
I think im sticking with wizard as my DD choice, but for my main character, im still looking at defiler and fury.
Cant decide on which one to be honest. I like the defiler's style if you will, but im afrid it will be too much of a healing class later on. Fury seems fun, but im only level 5 on it, cant tell what it will evolve into. That and im stuck in TD and havent seen another player at all (how long will that last?)
I would strongly advise against starting on the pvp server if you don't want to be ganked. It has a reputation for constant ganking of newbies. It would be better to play on PVE until you know the game a bit and then if the battlegrounds on the pve servers aren't enough than roll on the pvp server knowing what you are doing with your class. I don't think the battlegrounds start until you are level 80 but they are working on lowering it to 50, which you will get to pretty quickly. Find a high pop PVE or RP server and learn your way around first. You can see population level when you roll your char.
For performance if you press alt-O it will open options menu and you can click the first choice on the left to tweak performance. There are presets ranging from extreme quality down to extreme performance, i usualy play on high quality, i used to play on high performance with last computer. Also if you scroll down you click a checkbox for gpu shadows, it is preset to run off of cpu and would be better on gpu if you have a decent card. Press F11 to see your frame rate.
I would recommend against defiler if you don't want to be primary heals. Defiler is about the most pure healer in the game with the lowest dps of any class. Well it is suposed to be tied with templar for heals and low dps so you should stay away from both if you don't want pure healer. For the evil healer that debuffs and does some wicked dps you should look at inquisitor. I play a defiler as my main and we are very much in demand for groups and raids but we are always primary healer as our heals override the other healer classes. You can spec an inquisitor to be a melee battle priest and do a lot of damage while still being a respectable healer and in demand for raids.
Wardens also have a melee dps spec and they can do good heals and damage but don't seem to be in as much demand as chain and plate healers, probably because there are a lot of them. I have a warden friend that does fantastic and loves his class but also hear complaints from other druids about not finding groups. Not sure if it is just their personalities to complain or if there really is a problem.
Fury does better damage than the other healers and also heals. Although a good fury can be main healer in a group, the average fury is more secondary healer and dps. Some furies also say they have a hard time getting raids but they were buffed a bit in the last expansion and ours seems fine so far solo healing the mage group. I think the biggest issue with furies was that they were so common a couple expansions ago that every group already had one. Also some had the reputation for dpsing when they should have been healing. It is encouraged to dps while your group is healthy but if they dying while you try to get off a nuke it is a bad thing. I think they are less common now though and they are a good choice for someone new as long as you don't plan to be hard core raider.
I tend to think of a Fury as a lower-powered Wizard (same types of damage) plus healing and a running buff. As to Timorous Deep... I've only started one character there and didn't think much of it. Yeah, it's supposed to provide really good gear, and provides a very linear quest structure. Well, I don't like to be railroaded like that, and unless you want to jump in the ocean and swim all the way around the island, you pretty much have to run thru the quest sequence to get out of there to the rest of the game. Starting in Neriak or Kelethin are much better. Both will lead you by the hand thru your starting quests, but you can easily say "stuff this" and run off to the big city if you prefer.
Wait, EQ2 does or doesnt have battle grounds or whatever vairent of it.... does it?
Cross server BG's?
Or am i misreading what people were posting about?
If they do, or if its in the latest expansion im sold.
Let me know because ill roll a warlock (aoe's over raw DD right) on the highest pop pve server now and be done with it.
Yes, as of the newest expansion, EQ2 has cross-server battlegrounds, currently only accessible to players of high level, but SOE plans implementing lower level brackets, too.
How are they?
Also, any reason to do them?
Is there any type of guild vs guild pvp event?
There is no guild vs guild event, but you can join battlegrounds as a 24 person raid if you choose, and the odds of fighting the other guild queing up at the same time are probably pretty good. There are armor rewards comparable to raid loot, haven't really done anything in them myself since my playtime is limited to pve atm.
