Singleplayer strategy, (S)NES games and finally got GTA IV. MMORPG gaming been completely on halt for about half an year, if few logins aren't counted. Every now and then I get, not Bieber, but WoW fever, but it goes by very fast, when I recall how I felt about the game when I left it. I will be following Xsyon closely and even playing, and see if MMORPG's still can suck me in. If not, it's time to say hasta la vista, baby. I'll be back, maybe.
Is this the place for jaded MMORPG gamers to reminiscence the old, better days and spit on everything that's new, when in reality the situation isn't any worse? OR are these games really getting crappier year by year? Perhaps bit of both...
I've had a few weeks off work and decided to dwell into the MMO realm again. I might be a little picky and usually play games that are really unique or original, so I couldn't find a good game for quite a while, but found some eventually.
Last year I was playing Wurm Online (great sandbox environment, got a little out of control now though), CoX and Requiem Online and prior to that my favorites were Asheron's Call and Dark Age of Camelot, but other than that I havent played MMOs that much.
tried a few trials and a few f2p and overall most games were quite bad. too much cliche gameplay and same old crap.
F2P games:
Let's start with BAD
I gave Runes of Magic and even though it was kind of fun, something about it was too cheesy. I really didn't like the equipment layout and the constant free items that simply made hunting for items pointless. I guess it gets better later on, but at lvl 14, I felt no need at all to hunt for items or put any effort at all. it was just too bland I think.
Tried some other f2p games, such as Aika online and 4story and they felt too underdeveloped. it felt like I was playing a game from 4-5 years ago too. The graphics were a little better obviously, but gameplay was too shallow.
Chronicles of Spellborn seemed like a nice game, but unfortunately it's way too empty and feels like a single player game most of the time.
Face of Mankind was too newb unfriendly and you only get one char; it takes 14 days to change to a different faction if you are unhappy in your first choice. the gameplay feels a lot like Fallen Earth though (see below), less the huge landscape to explore.
Pirate Galaxy was original, but too repetitive.
Coming back to Requiem was a little weird too. It feels a lot less developed than other f2p games and it's definitely not as much fun as it used to be last year.
Neo Online was also kind of fun, but community and English translation are horrendous. So it's only fun for when I feel like running around alone, leveling my skills.
DDO - good concept, but all you do is run dungeons and that's just feels too limited for me. I love D&D games, but for some reason DDO was just not my cup of tea. I kind of wish they would stick to a more common MMORPG concept instead.
now GOOD. To be honest out of all f2p games I tried only three stood out and are still on my harddrive:
Wonderking - i was never into 2d scrollers, but this one is a little gem. it's silly fun
Draconica online - good mix of 2d scroller and slash 'em up 3d mmos. lotsa fun too. perfect to relax
Allods Online - amazing atmosphere and great story. very good community too, but the leveling is ultra slow and the game is extremely quest and equipment dependent. more so than WoW or any other mmo out there.
Battlefield Heroes - more of a MMO shooter, Team Fortress style, with levels that allow you to become more powerful, get more skills and get more items as well. Leveling is fun and gameplay is quite good too, but it's not much of a mmorpg since it's very action oriented. Leveling gets very slow after lvl 10 as well.
P2P trials:
Out of all trials I tried (Ryzom, AoC, EVE, LOTRO etc...), I only kind of liked one, Fallen Earth.
Ryzom was way too weird. It was also a little empty and most of the time I felt alone.
I gave AoC three tries over the last two years and every time I come to the same conclusion - the game gets boring after 3 days and quests feel too singe playerish. The storyline is amazing and the atmosphere is nice too, but the gameplay is too shallow. I got to lvl 19 this time and finally gave up because I was tired of constant linear levels and killing 100s of monsters just to get from point A to point B. It might get more fun after Tortuga, but from what I've heard this is the best part of the game and it was way too linear for me.
Tried EVE trial for the 4th time and the complexity just kind of crashed on me, making the game completely unplayable. Right click brings 20 options which make no sense. UI is filled with weird symbols and names. I understand it's the most complicated sandbox and it supposed to feel big, but look at Wurm online. It's complex yet simple in presentation. Eve is just too weird and I could never get into the whole space thing either. I don't like being a spaceship:)
LOTRO - too WoWy. says it all
Champions Online - good graphics and nice story, but CoX is soooo much better. And from what I can tell, you can't even fly in this game. what gives?? The game is good though. Worth a try if you're a super hero fan.
Fallen Earth is definitely a good game and it does have a Fallout feel to it. The action part is awesome and the crafting system is pretty complicated, but I think because it's done by an independent develop, it sort of feels unfinished and lacking in more contest. Hopefully it improves overtime though. Also it would have made an awesome item shop/f2p game because I find that 15$/month for it is a total rip off. I can see it getting boring after a few months because the landscape is pretty much all desert or occasional tree/hill and other than making your own vehicle, there really isn't that much in terms of a goal in the game. But the community is awesome, the story in the beginning is pretty good and the battle system/items are all very cool too. Graphics look realistic and not cartoony and that might be not for everyone, but still I would definitely suggest trying this out.
I'm yet to try DarkFall Online, but what I heard, it's not that good.
So in case you decided not to read all this (I wouldn't blame you), here is the SUMMARY:
I don't have any active MMO subscriptions at the moment.
No particular reason, I'm just a little bored with them. I've been playing single and multiplayer games while I'm waiting for new releases. There's no shortage of fun games out there, it's just a shame that so few of them are MMOs.
ive been playing lotro for the past few days because i like the crafting and the community is really cool to be around i like the story element of it as well, i play allods every so often to hang out with old guild members as well other than that just waiting for swtor and nfs world
if your in lotro and wanna hang out or quest send me a whisper im on brandywine server and name is Kiite ill be happy to help anyone. and allods im in nezeb server name is Kino.
Kaze is thy name, and flying high in the sky is where ill remain with the wind blowing though my wings i shall bring swift justice upon this world
I've gone through a lot of games/trials in the last year trying to pick up something I liked. I've tried EvE, figured since it was time based and I was years behind what's the point? Tried Champions Online, didn't like the fact that each world was stuck to about 50 ppl, didn't really give me a sense of it being a true MMO. Aion, the grind was too brutal to keep me interested. Played a bunch of f2p games, each one just like the next. Haven't really been able to find something to stick with.
Currently though I'm playing Global Agenda.... not your typical MMO but so far I'm loving it. I heard lots of bad things about it before I started so I never wanted to buy it. However they've got a great free trial right now, definitely worth checking out. Needless to say I bought the full game.
Playing AoC again. Played at launch it had some performance issues but mainly it felt underpopulated. Now that there are fewer servers it can even be at times overpopulated, but thats nice really if you get creative. I was trying a new alt and we made a PUG and rolled all the way through a zone hitting everyone's quest spots in series.
Play EVE or Ryzom when im on my laptop at when i'm in bed keeping the gf warm or on business travel. I should really pick one. I feel so attached to my character in EVE, I've unsubbed several times just to resub when I'm out of town. Ryzom just impresses the hell out of me, but I've not gotten too invested yet.
I was enjoying Darkfall but I don't have poopsocker time to devote to it. That's not a criticism of the game, I think there should be a hardcore niche (and wanted to use the term poopsocker). I have no jealousy over people that have more time to game - I just happily have a busy RL social life.
"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga
i just quit wow recently (again) after my longest without taking a break being a year. At a certainpoint being a GM just burns you out cause people fail to understand patience (if people didnt guild hop like its their job we would of had a super strong core but instead where about 15 Great players and 10 people just.....ugh)
ATM i guess i am MMO less. Right now im looking for a game that doesnt have to be time consuming but can if it wants to(i really dont mind things taking alot of time just dont want to schedule things around it). So im just playing monster hunter Tri .
Left Wow in jan and tried Lotro again for about a month. Currently going through bouncing back and forth between Dragon Age, Fallot 3 and the Mass Effect series. Already beat all of them multiple times but can't really think of anything else appealing.
f2p Soul of the Ultimate Nation: pretty fun, no hard grind, nice quests... haven't gotten to pvp levels yet because i'm just casually playing for now.
I need a better computer before I buy Darkfall, since it looks like the best current sandbox pvp mmorpg.
forgotten characters (Ultima Online,Everquest,DAoC) Qualme (Shadowbane on Mourning) Pandamonia (Lineage 2 on Bartz) Bridgit (Soul of the Ulimate Nation) deLiber (Aika Online) Qualme (ArcheAge on Kyrios) Looking for next PvP game
I agree with the sentiment that the beginning of 2010 sucks for MMORPGs. I blame Cryptic. I was SUPPOSED to be jaunting around the galaxy, killing klingons, etc in a seamless world with tons of EXTRA stuff to do but nooooo, they went and ruined the IP by making it a "game" and not a "world". Idiots.
I digress.
I'm playing these games off and on depending on my mood.
Titan Quest CoD6 MW2 - I suck though, too many kids with ADD running around like little monsters shooting me. Lotro - Lifetime sub so I can just pop in and out whenever WoW - rerolled an undead warlock, subscription withdrawal got messed up, now I'm not playing it at the moment, not really worried about it, was just playing it until Cata hits anyway. FFXIII - Was great at first, but the more I play the more I just want to get it beaten and go turn it in. Far too linear. Just Cause 2 - Fun, but mainly tiding me over till Red Dead Redemption.
Been working a bit in more in RL and have not been playing too many games. When I do have time I have been working through Fallout 3 since I have put it off for so long. Only two more of the little expansion packs and I will be mostly done other than a few little side quests.
Do have to say though I still like Oblivion more, but thats only because the world seemed a bit more alive to me. Might be because of all the ncie green trees, and wild life rather than seeing dirt and mutation everywhere.
I was going to get this, but after seeing a few vids on it I was turned off. I'm not very fond of some of the looks in armors (trite, I know), but the fact that every section of the map still has a loading screen drives me batty. Was my biggest problem with the original, and I don't care if it helps online-play logistics an reseting event scripts, it's just crazy to have such a thing in this day and age. My patience never wore thin in Morrowind/Oblivion transitions from interiors to the exterior, but those loadscreens took barely a moment. MH ones are crazy bad, and for just a room or corridor.

The section loading screens in Monster Hunter Tri are loads faster than the PSP versions and the original on PS2. It only takes a few seconds and you're moving again. I can see how it would turn some players off though.
