I was wondering if anyone heard of this game NEStalgia. It's suppose to be a parody of the old classical Dragon Warrior / Quest series of the NES. It also has a couple 90's movie references like Ghostbusters and whatnot. I played it a for awhile and I have to say I enjoyed it.

Again, like the Final Fantasy Legacy and Final Fantasy Online games for Byond, it requires the Byond client to play it. So download that first, and then go the HUB page to find the server link. Then you can join the game from there.

So my main question is, has anyone tried it or played it here? Just curious.

Looks interesting, but every time I try to play I just get a 'Connection Failed' message. Guess that settles that!

Do you have the Byond client installed first and created / registered a free key with Byond? It runs on the Byond engine to play. The server is up, so there shouldn't be any problems connecting to it if you have things set up properly.

If you have anymore trouble with this I can try and help with a step by step process if you can't figure it out. Just give me a nudge here. It shouldn't be all that difficult.

Nah, I got it figured out, played for a bit. It's not bad, a nice old-school time waster. I don't really think it has much lasting appeal for me over say, firing up my emulator and Dragon Warrior though.

Well there is a plethora of Byond games on the site if you feel adventurous. :)

If you love the old Final Fantasy, I'd give Final Fantasy Legacy a try. It's basically an online version of Final Fantasy IV from the SNES. There are other fan games out there as well if you desire such "time wasters" ;)

So has anyone been able to log into the game without any trouble?

Here's a quick guide if you're new to Byond:

Well since there is a bit of confusion to the newcomer to Byond, perhaps I should give a basic how to, to play games:

    1) Register your free byond key from the Byond site

    2) Install Byond Software (this is required to play the game)

    3) Open up Byond, you should see something like:

    Account: Guest

    Password:

Do not use Guest. Most Byond games filter out the Guest key for security reasons. It can work on some games (very few), but not this one. Instead type in:

Account: [Your Byond key insert here]

    Password: [Byond key's password]

And you should be logged into Byond and can now log into any game on Byond.

    4) Find the "Join" link under a "live" game's HUB page (like the NEStalgia link) WHILE still logged into Byond with your key (on the software and the site).

I hope this helps any confusion.

Wow, this sounds very, very intriguing. Being a child of the late 80's/early 90's, I spent a good portion of my younger years playing old nes/snes rpgs, so it's amazing to see them being brought into the online realm.

I just had two questions though:

    1. How is the overall population? Do any of the games have a nice little community in them? (Like FFIV for example?)

    2. Has there been any word about an online version of Earthbound for the snes (AKA Mother 2)? This is more or less a wishful thinking question haha - I really enjoyed that game.

NEStalgia was recently released, so it doesn't have a big population. However, most of it's community comes out towards the evening if you live in the US.

There is some Final Fantasy MMOs on Byond, yes. If you want to see a FFIV online, try Final Fantasy Legacy there. Its population is a bit more peaked, but it's also been around for awhile.

I have yet to see someone make an Earthbound MMO yet though. Remember, these are Indie developers, people like you, that make these games. So if you really want to see a Earthbound fan game, go for it! Byond is a game engine afterall.

Wait, is this an mmo, or single player? If it's an mmo I definitely wanna check it out.
