For me its still the community and the feeling and presence that it is a MMorpg your playing.  Today I helped a Ls mate get his test for this bluemage to do his level 70 limit break quest that took an hour. Then helped 3 LS mates do CoP mission 2-5 which can be done in maybe an hour but we had difficulties and it took maybe 3 hours. Thing is even though it went nothing like expected we regrouped some changed jobs and in the end accomplished what we set out to.

Now me and 2 others didnt need this mission we were just there to help. And that is the kind of community you have in ffxi. People go out of there way to be helpful. Around every turn you will meet great people and have memorable experiences. Nothing in any mmo Ive played has touched this level and feeling of gratitude and accomplishment that ffxi has to offer.

    This

I have never felt welcomed to the world in an MMORPG when just starting out except FFXI. All mmos its on your own. But in FFXI, all you have to do is ask someone a question when starting out, they help you, add you to there linkshell, and you'll get help the rest of your gamespan.

Being a FF fan since 7 and i still have the ps1 disk with the price ticket still on the front of the game I have a copy of all the pal ps1 and ps2 FF's other than 11 which i own on pc as well as the lastest 13 but i do have to say since leaving FFXI I find my self wondering whhats going on with my old LS I read through forum after forum keeping up with the lastest goings on and then think about reinstalling the game but then i think FFXIV is coming and want to give that go and i know you can't truly play 2 mmo of Final fantasy at the same time due to the fact the NM need to be camped + the cost so i find myself placing the disks back in the box and wishing i hadn't read through the forums lol, still here i am again another forum and the reinstall has started this time i have no choice as i have just paid out for 3 months in advance.

FFXI is a game where unless you are a loner you will always find someone to chat to and find something to do and with the new level sync system parties are a dream to get even for those nasty levels where most jobs are useless at some point as with all games you get to a point where you are too powerful for this but too weak for that so now you are never really in need lvl sync even a lvl 75 down to lvl 10 is possible if you want them extra xp point's for a merit or a member of the ls wants to lvl up another job.

anyway time is almost the the final few files are about to download in the up date and I have a date with leaping Lizzy lol.

thake care all and remember FFXI is your friend

I tried to come back to the game and reactivate my old characters and got stumpe on the re-activation as well.

sadly calling support was not an option (only numbers I could find were US based and i am UK based) and teh online agent thing I did for about 3 hours with no reply before giving up in disgust and vowing never to try the game again.

Its a shame really cos I loved the game and only quit due to RL time constraints. Now i would love to play it and try and get my GF to paly it too but I am loath to restart the game at level 0 and have to rebuy all the discs once again.

lets hope FX14 is worth the wait

I know of people that still play from NA pc release(when i started) they still do things together, etc

had a run in with the dreaded POL support trying to reactivate my original account(again from 2002) apparently it was hacked and someone changed all of my personal details so they require either a cd key(ha!) or some credit card numbers from 8 years ago, 6 hours later no dice

so i started a new account

    My memories of FFXI include:

    • Leveling: Waiting forever to find a perfectly balanced group willing to pursue the noble, heroic quest of beating on crabs in a 6-to-1 fight and yet hoping to God we still survive.

    • Landmark Moments: Such as unlocking the subjob option, completing an advanced job quest, or finally achieving that ever-coveted Jeuno airship pass. All you need are--depending on the circumstances--a higher level player to do the real work for you, or an alliance of 17 of your closest friends that have nothing better to do.

    • Combat: Spend most of your melee career on auto-attack, but every once in awhile you can do awesome skillchains, provided you and your party members can comprehend the elaborately complex, multi-layered flowchart for the elementally appropriate effect.

    • Attaining spells and gear: Your spells are sold by random vendors in different, out-of-the-way towns, and the awesome item you want is dropped by a NM which only pops once every 48 hours and is already camped by 50 bots hoping to sell it for more gil than you make in a month.

I'm a big fan of the FF console games, but my FFXI experience felt less like an epic adventure than its console brethren or most other MMOs I've played. Between the complications of the grind, the low level of virtual world immersion, and the lack of engaging solo options when I feel the need for some "alone time," I just can't see myself going back.

Such a great game this was over the years but not I'm not quite sure you'll get the same experience now because of population issues. FFXIV is on the way and everyone should be excited about it.

Population is doing as good as ever if not better. With the server merges, the servers were repopulated, not only that, but the hype for FFXIV, is actually gaining population in my opinion. All the impatient people are running onto the game in order to sooth there hype, whether new players or returning. Plus with level syncing now availiable, its easier to fill party slots with higher level players in low level areas, which makes the low level partying areas not a pain to get a party.
