Help me narrow down so I can play the "perfect" MMORPG

GeminiStaticGeminiStatic Member UncommonPosts: 182

Okay, I've been in and out of the MMORPG loop. In fact, get this, I've been so out of the loop I literally gave up my PC (it's old as Mummy balls too). I'm more of a musician and writer, so I've been meddling with my Black Macbook 2008 edition. NOW STOP STOP STOP... thank you relax I'm very much aware of the whole situation at hand. Yes yes yes I know PCs are better for gaming, Macs are a joke blah blah blah blah. Whatever, I don't care. I'm not here for one of those fan boy discussions.

Macs are still better for things such as music making and blah blah blah... but yes I agree for me to game on my Black MacBook is kinda ... well.. unusual if you will.

I have used parallels desktop 5 to run most of these games. I've been able to successfully run the following....

Everquest

Everquest 2

Darkfall *a little sketchy on performance, but it worked*

Guild Wars

Minions Of Mirth (Ehhh successfully just using MAC)

And there's a lot more I would love to try out but at the same time not really lol..

In times where I need inspiration for writing and music, I tend to turn to video games to get creative juices flowing, so yea. So here's what I'm looking for in a MMORPG.

- Open World PVP

- A Wide Varieties of Classes/Races

- Will Also Consider A Skill Based Leveling System Like Darkfall or Fallen Earth (which I wish I could run)

- Not a COMPLETE Sci-Fi Setting.

- Post Apocalyptic is a PLUS.

- Something with decent graphics and that my computer can handle.

- Very populated (Yes I guess I like the mainstream games)

I've started all in 1999 with Everquest. I didn't go back until 2004 and along the way I've tried several games. I've played WOW which I think is great but I don't know its just not me anymore.I like something a little more advanced if you will. I've also tried Entropia Universe, Neocron, ENdless Ages, etc

I've currently been enjoying Everquest 2 a lot! I like the idea behind Guild Wars but haven't been able to play it just yet (I just signed up for trial yesterday)

Now i pretty much feel I'm going to narrow it down between Everquest 2 or Guild Wars. But I just need to know the comparison between the two in your guy's experiences. But based on what I gave you guys just now I would like to know what you guys would suggest for me.

Yes, Everquest 2 runs like a beauty on my lovely MacBook. I would love to play Fallen Earth but that aint going to run on my computer. I like Darkfall. but I would wish it would run a little better espcialy when it comes ot the battles... Eeeekkk.

Anyways my Specs on my Black MacBook follows....

Installed Memory:

4 GB Of Ram

Operating System:

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard/Parallels Desktop 5/Crossover For Games

Processor Type:

Intel Core 2 Duo

Video Chipset:

Intel GMA X3100

Processor Speed:

2400

Hard Drive Size:

250000

Weight:

80

Also I want to know if my video card beats other GeForce cards also. (I know stupid of me I used to know this and I've lost touch with al these numbers and letters now).

Pretty much I just want to know which video cards are beaten by mine. Like for an example, which is the last video card that's beaten by mine. Like does my card beat GeForce 4 cards and below or does it beat any other others neweer than that version?

Thanks and I apologize for my long extensive thread :)

That I can at least help you with ( I suck on macs).

    Guildwars:

    +

    Cheap

Great PvP, mostly arenastyle but a few battlegrounds in factions)

    Best programmed online game ever

    Great challenge level

    Very little grind

    A lot of content

    -

    Very instanced

Character development stops rather fast, reaching 20 goes fast and with some green gear, the elite skills you want unlocked and the runes on your armor you like you will work mostly for titles and skins.

    EQ2

    Even more content

The time it takes to max out your character is pretty good

Many dungeons, some instanced other open

Loads of classes and races to choose from

    -

    Really bad PvP

Real money shop with XP pots

Somewhat grindy, with lots of factions, the need to grind for master skills and raid gear

I don't actually see any reason to play both games, since GW have no monthly fee the price for that is fine. And only yopu can tell which one of them that is more fun. I played GW over a year but have been on hold for pretty long, I burned out. I play EQ2 right now but have been cutting down on the time lately.

I would suggest Fallen Earth but I have absolutely no idea if/how it would run on a mac.

Have you ever considered trying... WOW?

Yeah I played WOW. I liked it for awhile but it just doesn't intrigue me as much. I don't mean to insult the game but to me it just seems a little too on the simple side of things in my eyes. I mean it's still a great game, but just not my thing.

Dude you have no idea how BAD I wish I could play this one. You have no idea. I'm only considered about this game because of the recent 80% decrease in the company's employment, I mean it might not mean much but thats not a good sign of a MMORPG ya know?

Thanks dude, you prove many good points I was actually thinking of all those pros and cons. The PvP does kinda blow in Eq 2. I've been ganked so many times in Darklight and I just sit there and wonder how the hell will I succeed in the future with that. It just doesn't seem like a viable choice for PvP but I still just enjoy the mechanics. But yea man thanks for the input.

My main game is Darkfall but I really love Guildwars and play it every night for about 20 minutes. I don't care for the PVE but you can make a PVP toon without any grind at all and no penalties when competing vs a PVE character (besides not able to PVE on em). You can only bring 8 spells into combat and have hundreds to chose from so you can come up with totally orignal builds that work (and that nobody knows about). You can enter combat instantly and most of the people who play it suck really bad . .. so compared to Darkfall it is really easy, but fun! Not going to get much of any kind of adrenaline rush compared to Darkfall as dying really does not matter and it is all instanced battlegrounds.

The community isn't bad but REALLY young for the most part. Lots of kiddies play that game because there's no reoccuring monthly charge. EQ2 is a great game too but defnitely not for me. I tried to find an adult-only guild for several several months and was not able to find one . ..

EDIT: sorry I had just noticed that you listed already playing GW.

Not sure if you're aware of this, but If you figure out how to run a program called Bootcamp you can play just about everything. The only mmo's that are usually excluded are those that use GameGuard or HackShield.

Just mentioning it since you seem to be a more casual mmo'er, and setting up your mac to play a plether of F2P games would probably be better for you.

Given modern Macs are PCs... just dual boot Win7 and OS X.  Onboard GPU going to be massive limit on choices though.

Man, Darkfall seems really harsh but thats what I love about it. If I had an option and was able to run Darkfall I would probably try for that one really hard. In my opinion I think its closest the perfect MMORPG. Its like totally realistic no instances nothing man. Just straight up kill kill kill if you get killed tough shit. Again I can run it but its kinda unplayable in a sense like a city siege forget It, my shit will not make it. Thanks for the heads up!

Thats not a bad idea neither. The only thing is I do l like good quality and a lot of these F2P MMOs seem kinda weird or not my style. But thanks for the heads up man.
