CNN.com is reporting that four Second Life players have filed a class action lawsuit against Linden Lab over the ownership of virtual land in Second Life. The suit claims that Linden Lab has misled players into thinking they owned their virtual land.
The plaintiffs, who filed the suit in te US District Court of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, are citing California's consumer protection laws to make their case. Linden Lab is based in California.
The complaint alleges Linden Lab promised that players actually owned their property, and that they have since changed their rules stating that the lend is provided as a "service" that can be canceled at any time. The plaintiffs are seeking $5 million in damages.

If they win they should get paid in Lindens. "For your virtual damages, here is your virtual cash."
"Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, we were called by the Admin of the site . . . "
Some people have no shame. This is just a ridiculous attempt to bamboozle the American court system by claiming that the virtual property holds actual value. Only the most Liberal of Liberal judges would even take this case seriously, I think it's a joke and I'm pretty Moderate myself.
Sorry Charlie, your virtual whore house may bring you some real world cash, but that doesn't make it a tangible asset.
My other post was deleted because it contained a negative view on Americans, and they call it trolling, not that this was my intention...
nevertheless,
Its sad that these things CAN ACTUALLY HAPPEN......
Thanks for the laugh.
Second Life ToS states that the virtual land is service. I guess it doesn't hurt to do a little research before dumping money into what I concider nothing.
Robots will kill you!
Eminent domain.
Linden Labs is the "government" of that virtual land, and just like in reality where you don't actually "own" the land you own (you pay "rent" to the government, aka property taxes), the government can take your land as long as they give fair value and its "for the public good". Fair value would be, oh, zero dollars.
after that game company wonder why they dont have player!if a player as to file lawsuit for the dev to begin to listen to gamer
lolt the game dev has only themselves to blame.
Funny jokes, funny jokes, funny jokes. Wait... they're not really funny...
It's "Second" Life people. SECOND Life. it's not "Real" life.
I'd ask "what is wrong with you people?", except that I don't want to understand. Not in the least.
That post is coming from someone posting on a mmo site himself...? Get a clue is what is actually needed there.
Most people in SL who have steady businesses can make anywhere from 500-2k USD per month with a decent setup. And that isn't even some of the actually successful businesses who can make six figure incomes per year in SL. So you think they need to get a life? They probably have a better one than you Cik_Asalin.
TOS and EULA do not hold up in court as they are one sided and can be changed by the license hold at will with no input from the subscriber.
This lawsuit is a direct result of advertising and is the future of RMT and virtual property. Once virtual property obtains real money value the next step is for the government to tax it. It's coming.

Amen Czanrei. I earn $200 USD a month in "Second Life" working on computer graphics and design.
The clueless monkeys on this website who make these uneducated jokes about the "game"? I'm surprised they know how to dress themselves in the mornings.
That virtual land is worth real money to the company, so it has real value to the players.
I hope they win their suit.

No kidding Cujo and I wonder exactly how many of the games those critics play that allow them to legally earn real money online? Certainly not games that allow making your own hours to work I bet. I can't speak for everyone, but I know I don't enjoy working like a slave at minimum wage for peanuts.
lol'd
this is not the first lawsuit from that insane asylum called second life, i know people that have gone to jail from it
You know whats so crazy is that people actually believe that Second Life is the only MMORPG with "insane" players on it.
If you actually believe that, then you're as delusional as a person can be.
Guide to building virtual society:
1) Make a empty world and call it a social MMO
2) Allow players to "make their own content"
3) Change ToS to say you now own all the content made by them
4) Profit!
So if they "purchased" this virtual property and it's worth real money, I do assume that they paid all the appropriate federal, state and local taxes associated with the purchase and holding of "real estate" right?
As the old saying goes.....carefull what you wish for....you may just get it!
