General: What if the Perfect MMORPG Took Over the World?

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

Kotaku's Mike Fahey has uncovered a neat video by the folks at SMBC Theater which follows planet Earth falling into an apocalypse as the "perfect" MMO has been created -- and has proceeded to take over the world.

As Mike points out, the video, while funny, serves as a cautionary tale to us MMO gamers, which is especially relevant given the number of incidents that have occurred due to MMO obsession in recent years.

Nope.  Never.  And I have an addictive personality.  If people let anything interfere with RL issues or things that need to be taken care of, like kids and eating, it is all a matter of choice.  No if, ands, or buts.  Let's keep responsibility and accountability  where it belongs.

Eh, would have been better if they didn't actually show the game.

...we'd be screwed because many around the world think World of Warcraft is the "perfect" MMO.

Funny but true. There are currently 12 step therapy progams for mmo addiction. But I have MMO-ADD so I lose interest in games to fast to become addicted to them. Still trying to find the perfect mmo, so who knows if I would stay with it even if it existed.

    Collector of old minis.

    Playing WAR:Age of Rekoning

Lol this reminded of  5 years ago when my rl freinds started playing Wow. It was like everybody had disapeared. Then I went to find them and see what was going on and found them playing a computer game I was incredulous.  Five days later and I was adicted as well. :(

Rofl that is funny killed by a video game. I think they took the story about the korean parrents who left the  3 year old die while playing games for 3 days straight get carried away.

it was until cthun patch came out

and a perfect mmo cannot exist for long because as it gains popularity more people start to migrate to the game and once the company realizes that they start to morph the game to be more favorable for the new masses, thus ruining the game for the "true" gamers

Perfect world used to be perfect. It still is,its just I dont see the point in playing it if its just like WoW.But dont worry,we wont have to worry about a thing, because Blizzard will pay all its art attention to its new MMO draging you away from WoW.Because secretly they know they are running out of content to keep t he players intertained for 5 more years. They had to scrap the old content because if they made a new x-pac in a diffrent region, new players would get really bored in old world and quit without wanting to adventure the new stuff.But-back to slaying dragons!

I've missed a night of sleep here nd there from playing an MMO, but not any important stuff like work or doctor appointments.

I've also missed a night of sleep here and there from; console games, books, Windows solitaire, Adult Swim, crossword puzzles............

Blame the personality, not the "drug".

Sadly it does happen to a lot of people.  I recently cancelled my WoW account because I took a step back, realized I was spending more time playing that than working on my school work and the end of term was just 2 months away with 3/4 courses to still finish.

In the last 2 weeks, I've submitted 2 more courses and waiting on my books to finish the last one.  Next term I plan to resub again, but be more mindful of my balance of time.

NEWS FLASH! PAYING THE SUB IN F2P = NO DIFFERENCE THAN P2P GAMES!

Why the hell can't the whiners comprehend this?

In my hardcore DAoC times i aranged my RL around the game - so no cinema visists where there was a raid/event. My big advantage was, that nearly all my RL friends played DAoC too (i infected them ^^), so mostly our RL timeplan fits with the ingame events and we had still a RL and meet us.

It is a lot easier to play a MMO than do something in RL - in RL you have to style up, drive and so on - playing in a VR World is just some clicks away - imho that is one big factor :)

Ain't you guys sussed it yet mmos are first primative steps in what will become totally immersive virtual worlds . There will come a day at some point in the future when people will prefer them to the real thing and never leave . Admitedly thats proberbly not going to be in our lifetime even if your some 8 year old kiddie playing his first mmo now . (Nearly mentioned a game there but I'm not gonna troll) . :P

I think it will happen though at some point because fantasy is more attractive than reality to lots of people . Well most of us really when you think about it . How many of you have base jumped or driven a racing car or raided tombs for that matter .

I remember playing the first game I ever really got into on the old atari 1040st .It was called Dungeon Master an old puzzle and hack rpg back in the early 90s .I remember saying to a friend at the time that it would be great if you could one day play these rpgs with hundreds of other players .

He said it would never happen .

Neil Stephenson already covered this in his book Snow Crash.

It was called the Metaverse. It inspired Second Life.

My X used to call it the other woman. I was in a raid  while playing everquest when my wife apeared naked and attempted to do everything she could to entice me into abandening the commitment I had made and come to bed. I told her I'd be there in a few mins..........Three hours later the raid ended and I was cut off for a week.

I feel ya oakfoot... I feel ya.

I've never abandoned something terribly important in the business sense, just the emotional =S

I am playing EVE and it's alright... level V skills are a bit much.

You all need to learn to spell.

    Snow Crash is amazing.

I remember when Second Life came out, I dusted off my copy and re-read it and was amazed by how accurate he was.

Not to mention how accurate William Gibson was about viral marketing in Pattern Recognition....

    Books are good, m'kay!
