Microsoft paid $75 million to stop GTAIV PS3 exclusivity?

ThomasN7ThomasN7 87.18.7.148Member CommonPosts: 6,690

So now we pay off companies not to put things on the PS3 because you know if you didn't people would really not have a reason to buy a 360. This is rather disturbing because it also rasies some questions as to what other pay offs Microsoft does to stay afloat on the gaming market.  It also makes me wonder what other companies out there like Microsoft who pay off people to keep other games from being advertized or even played for that matter.

I smell too much conspiracy theory here. Im a sole owner of ps3 and all my games are ps3, but it doesnt bug me that a game company that does what they feel is best for thier own good and not what others might think is best for them. Im sure this agreement did not come quickly or lightly.  If the game they put out is great and playable, I could care less what other systems its on. The more money that is seen could mean better qualiity games. I begrudge no game company trying to do what they feel is best for them.

I agree with Lamarak.  Sounds smart to me.

Why wouldn't they want less competition and for people to buy their product over others? It is called business.

Work hard and save up the money to buy both systems or stop crying and complaining about it. Easy solution to these xbox and ps3 exclusive games.

i personally would like every game to be on 360/ps3/pc but that will never happen. what would make me upset would be a company paying off another company to exclude a game from a certain console

Which the both Xbox and the PS3 have done to the PC.

I just thought i would point out that this has been going on since the very beginning ,this is nothing new,SOE made the FF series a Playstation exclusive but the partnership was a two way street,Square was near folding up shop and SOE helped save the franchise. This is not a Microsoft thing, this is something all the console developers are doing.

75 million?? Wow. Who wants to open a game company? Our game is just going to be about robbing hookers, and murdering civilians. Who doesn't daydream about that?

I own both systems, and with how cheap they are becoming these days really any hardcore gamer can afford both... hell I bought mine when they were expensive.  Anyways back on topic I agree with what people are saying, if a company can get their game on both systems then of course they should... more money to them means they can make more games in the future; maybe even with a bigger budget.

Not wanting to turn this into a console war thread I still need to point out that the PS3 is techincally better than the Xbox 360, once developers start using the PS3 to the best of its abilities there is no reason we won't see plenty more PS3 exclusives in time.  The PS3 will have a longer lifespan, and my gutt feeling is that it will have better games than the Xbox 360 down the road... the only thing the Xbox 360 may always dominate in is the multiplayer aspect of console gaming; even though I'd much rather buy the PS3 version of any game I just can't do it for games I know will be mostly played online.  Best example I know of is MW2 where the xbox user-base is at least double that of the PS3... so obviously I bought the Xbox version.

Nobody forced Rockstar to take the money. They can make decisions on their own, and if they want a lump sum rather than the hassle of producing disks for the PS3, then a new marketing campaign, followed by adding new tech support, and whatever overhead I am leaving out, well that's their business sense kicking in.

pc and 360 are so close in configuration that 360 is worth the trouble to put games on it but ps3 most dont bother yes its a nice toy but too complex for its own good!espacially when you think that the console isnt a big market

wii is in a market of its own almost!as for gta 4 last time they were in the news it braught so mutch publicity that im sure ms noticed that if they can do pub in gta4 for halo reach they ll get their money back just with the big publicity so they made a good move there

Lets go backwards to not some many years back:

Toshiba paid Paramount for Exclusivity with HDD

Sony well paid a lot of publishers and then Paramount a huge chunk of money and changed that really quick. Blu-Ray is your new larger storage capacity discs.

    Go back a bit further:

Lets say Rockstar made GTA 3 for Xbox and not on the PS2 and then released it 2 years later on the PS2 which of course was a double pack with Vice City, PS2 would have never sold that many units. Sony paid a lot of money to Rockstar for what was suppose to be 3 years exclusivity but was changed to 2 years.

Companies with money get to play with other companies, it's just how it goes, sometimes for the good and sometimes for the bad.

    Wildstar (2013) & Elder Scroll Online (2013)

    Playing: Diablo 3, WOW, Far Cry 3 & X-Com.

Enjoyed: WOW 5 1/2 yrs, LOTRO 3yrs, GW 1/2yr, DFO 1yr, EVE Online 3yrs, and Huxley (Beta).

Failed to impress: GW2 3months, Tera Online 6 months (best combat system in any MMO I've played) STO 1/4yr, Aion 1/2yr, AoC 1yr, CO, Fallen Earth, DDO, EQ2 1/2yr, WAR 1/2yr, Lineage 2 and FF XI 1/2yr, FF XIV.

did any of you read the article at all ?  They did not pay to have it release on the Xbox only.  They PAID to have it co released onto the 360 at the same time the PS3 got the game because previously GTA games were exclusively released onto the Playstation then released later on xbox/pc.

Oh and this is nothing new.  EA Paid off the NFLPAA for exclusive license so madden didnt have any competition killing the NFL 2k series which people thought was just as good if not better.

True that paying for exclusivity of a game is common, but you might want to check your info on Final Fantasy. The game was originally on the nintendo, named because the people who composed Square Soft were about to go under. Luckily for them the game was an insane hit. SoE is a completely separated from Sony's single-player endeavors (SoE= Sony Online Entertainment).

Even when the deal between Nintendo and Sony fell out and resulted in the Sony Playstation 1/X, Square Soft continued releasing Final Fantasy games for the both companies. There was never any exclusivity. The most SE has been paid for (as I am aware of), is for the rights to have FF13 on the 360.

    This isnt new.

How do you think these game companies get exclusives?

They pay the big bucks to keep a game off another platform.

If certain PS3 exclusives werent actually created by sony microsoft would have bought them too and vise versa.

This has been going on since the old NES, Sega Master system days on consoles.

360 is more populer then the ps3 anyhow, for 1 reason you cant copy games for ps3 where you can for 360 becouse blueray blank disk just too expensive to buy.

    This is fairly old news.

Of course Microsoft paid to get GTA onto the Xbox.  Hell i bet they paid to have the DLC released on the Xbox first.

That sort of business is fine in my mind.  It is when Microsoft pays X million to have GTA on the Xbox and not released on the PS3, that is when i start to have an issue with this kind of business.

Rather lame from a gamer's point of view but fairly common from a business point.

Sony and Nintendo have done and will continue to do the same thing.  All three of them have done this at times to try and make a title or titles an exclusive least for a time being to strengthen their console sales and for pr reasons.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

I have windows, don't get me wrong, it for the most part is a good product and being a PC user and gamer I have little choice, but I do not like Microsoft for ethical reasons...

I normally don't like wishing anyone ill, and I don't know what percent Microsoft gets off the actual game sales, but I hope in this case it comes nowhere close to making up that 75 million on GTAIV.

Having a PS3 exclusive game is a big bonus because it supports blu-ray wich is like 10x the size of crappy xbox360 discs.

Look at uncharted 2 ps3 exclusive, so detailed and big, the game started when you think it was ending.

Only the fact that ps3 has blu ray makes it better.
