I mean what is up with all the stupid names? Why call your character something that has no relation to the lore of the game whatsoever? What makes it so funny to you? Do you do it to annoy others? To stand out? What is it?
Why do you shame yourself by picking such a stupid name?

There are many reasons why people pick the names they do. Some people don't play the game due to the lore, but rather for the competative options of the game, so a name based on lore is meaningless. Others utilize the same name from game to game, which is helpful when playing with people you played with in another game. Perhaps the name originally meant something in the lore of another game, but doesn't now. No matter the reason, why does it make a difference to you?
My Ironbreaker (Dwarf tank class in WAR, and if you know anything about Warhammer Dwarves, you know their beards are sacred) was named Itchybeard. Face it, it's your character and you can name him or her whatever you want. In LotRO, I kept it authentic for my Guardian - Caerwald, meaning something close enough to "castle guard" - but if I wanted to name my Hobbit Pufnstuf, I could. I'm more concerned with how a player acts rather than what his name is. If names were a reflection of people's real personalities, then people named Adolf or Saddam - or Hussein - would probably be murderers.
Well I for one like your name KorovaMB. Makes me want to stop in for a bit of the old moloko plus. Synthemesc always sounded like the best.
I am going to have to agree with you on this. Nothing annoys me more than joining an mmo and walking through town to see the following.

Seriously people come up with the dumbest things I have ever seen to use as a character name. I think it stems from lack of creativity. Maybe these people just aren't capable of rational and original thought so they just jam a bunch of ignorant catch phrases or IP names together to make something.

Sorry, not everyone is fluent in the <insert racial tongue here> of their game and some people actually like having names that can be pronounced.

Your beating a dead horse. Most would like to see some relevant, not necessarily to the games lore, but to naming in general.
But dev's will never really police names that are utterly rediculous and non-sensical unless they are racially charged or as bad; i.e. a really bad name.
So, what you are saying is they may not be able to speak english every well, so having the name 'Analrapist' is okay because it is easy to pronounce?
It really doesn't matter if you join a RP server or not.
Go to a rp server and you will see plenty of this.

you starting to see my point now. Some people like I said are just 100% incapable of original thought. They populate every server of every mmo ever made.
I always give my characters silly names. I don't care about the game lore nor do I read it. I find the people who give their characters serious names comical.
I'm not sure what's shameful about it? It's a video game, you're playing an elf / dwarf / gnome... we're a little beyond being serious.

There is no need to know the game's lore in and out to find a name that may fit. I am not talking about slightly weird names, heck I am not even talking about the Leegolas, Egolas, Begolas and such either since even though they may be annoying they still kinda fit the lore and in reality we all have people with the same name we have. I am talking about the Yourmum, Cmonbabycmon, Ikillurdaddy, etc. Those names are not made by people with even the slightest bit of respect for other people's immersion. I wonder why they do it.
Besides, find me an mmo that enforces a strict naming policy on their RP server, if they even have such a server, and I would be happy. Sadly such a thing does not exist in any of the bigger mmo's. Maybe some small indy game does it, but I have not heard of any that does.
Using the same name in every game? Fine. Pick a name generic enough to fit most, if not all kinds of lore. Why pick something utterly stupid?
One advantage with stupid names though is its a good moron filter. People with rotten names goes instantly on /ignore /nogroup.
Okay, you don't care about roleplaying, don't care about the lore and don't want to take a game serieus. I am fine with that, but ask yourself this simple question: Why pick a name that makes it harder for others to enjoy their game? Do you need a name that is in clear violation to the lore to enjoy your game? I suspect not. However to those that want to immerse themselves into the lore, the virtual world the game provides, your name does matter. It destroys a part of their immersion.
So if you don't need a certain name to enjoy your game why pick a name that destroys the enjoyment for others?

Being devils advocate then - why not let offensive names stand then? Its just a game after all.
The point of its just a game is valid, but how many players are really gaming with you when their name is dfjacfijafadfsad?
Almost 90% of these are gold farmers. Did you buy time or buy a game so you can run with the likes of toons with gibberish names? Ispankedurmom? udienow? pArTEEnmyPAntz?
I just think if you are going to devote hours of your life to enjoy the ambience of a game with others, there should be some code of civility with naming policies that should contribute to the game atmosphere. Not to mention those games that have poor LFG tools. how many times I had to type in a god awful name to send him a tell or invite to a party or whatever.

I remember there was an elf cleric back on Tribunal in EQ1 named Elfis Priestly.. that was a classic.
Otherwise this topic seems like rules to be laid down in the EULA of individual games.
I fully support people being able to name themselves almost anything. That's because if someone is named <L33tN33z>, right away I know I want nothing to do with them. So I am glad for the heads up.

I have to admit if I see someone with a childish or profane name I just ignore or stay away from them.
Its also the biggest complaint of the jump feature I have, I dont dislike being able to jump but why does everyone have to act like they travel on a pogo stick everywhere they go sporting those retarded names?
Because not everyone cares about LORE.
Is it really because they don't care, or is it because when they entered the MMO market, they were greeted by a bunch of games where "Lore" was not part of their list of features? (i.e cookie cutter)
Nah ... there are lots of mini-maxers and achievers that cares nothing but dps efficiencies, gear score, and boss tactics.
How many % of the wow players can actually tell you (or care) about the story of the frozen throne, or Thrall?
You don't have to care about the lore to pick a name that fits it. Go play a singleplayer game and you can name your character whatever you want, nobody will care since only you play the game. The moment you enter a multiplayer game there are other people to think about as well. Why go out of your way to ruin their fun?
Hey, sounds to me like you've never heard of the possibility that some human beings may not play MMORPG's because they want to play it for the same reasons you want to. Some of us humor ourselves with silly names because it doesn't matter, it's so easy to simply remove yourself from the presence of a person with a name that is bothering you.
If you let something as simple as me running around as a freaking Orc fighting gigantic magic casting dragons, but with my name tag being "Fishtaco" annoy you than by god it sounds pretty hard to please you.
i just think of all the issues within the MMORPG community that this would be the least of most peoples' worries.
Most probably do it for the exact response you just gave them, to tweak the tail of people they feel take themselves far to seriously.

Why? Because they can.
That's pretty much the reason. Every MMO with RP servers (WoW included) has naming conventions. Just read WoW's EULA and ToSA. Their RP servers have rules for naming, for people who break immersion, and a bunch of other things.
The problem is that none of it is enforced. Ever. It's lip service to Roleplayers to say they have it, and maybe enforce it for the first month before ignoring what they have in black and white for the rest of the game's existence.
If names had to be approved by a person (crazy idea, I know) before people saunter into the RP server's gameworld, you'd probably see a nice drop of the most glaring names. Of course, someone would need to be paid to do scan a few thousand names a day.
Either way, players do it because they can. Some do it because the name has lore of its own with the person, others because they're just uncreative, some because they could care less about Roleplaying and join the server because it's "an easy win" type deal, and still some join just to annoy the Roleplayers (think Jocks vs. Nerds).
My advice? If you want immersion, stick to SRPGs. MMOs have never had any support (even half-assed support) for Roleplayers. The game that does and is able to provide a good game beyond enforcement and support, will probably be a monumental hit.

You say it doesn't matter, I tell you otherwise. It does matter what name you pick. I am no lore fanatic, I don't mind normal names that don't really fit the lore completely. I do mind names that are absurd because it ruins my playstyle. Serieus names that fit the lore do not ruin your playstyle, does it?
I am not hard to please, just don't pick a moronic name and act decent towards others.
Ofcourse to you this is a small issue, you don't care about immersion! For those of us that do care about that find names just as important as class balance is important to pvpers.
