Get used to a build in EQ2 and they change the game. happened twice to me so i will never play again.
the first time, they took my class out of the game completely.
Really? Took your class out of the game completely? Because I have played EQ2 since beta and they have never removed a class to my knowledge. Changed them, yes, but removed completely? Don't think so.
And to the person who mentioned that it came out before WoW - sure did. A whole month before. ::insert eyerolling here::
EQ2 is not for everyone, but I have played (and still play) most of the MMOs out there (well, ok, never EvE Online), and it is still one of the best.
Only thing I can think of is when they removed the archtype > class > sub-class class progression.
Vanguard is just a cheap imitation of EQ2 with a different skin to sucker more money out of gamers. Like my earlier post, EQ2 isn't exactly the best game to imitate either.
Vanguard is much more in depth than EQ2 will ever be, it just has no budget and practically no devs, if polished it would be a wonderful MMO.
Besides, if Vanguard was a cheap imitation of EQ 2 I would be playing EQ 2.
More polish, more money behind it, dedicated development team, greater population, regularly updated.
So obviously there have to be differences between them and some that are positive enough to make a person play Vanguard over EQ 2.
Besides, EQ 2 is a fine game, it's just too cute for my tastes.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

I'm not sure how to describe it but VG just feels more "RPGish".
I tried to play it and no matter where i went there was an ongoing conversation on how eq2 was so much better than wow and how much wow sucked in everything it offers, not to count half the time the things they blamed WoW for were exagerated or totally untrue, but whatever, even if they had pointed out valid points it would still be as annoying.
I will never understand people that need to bash other games as of to uplift their own´s value.
I don't think I could ever return to the Everquest world. It was great, but SOE destroyed it.
I played EQ2 quite late... beginning in 2009, but I never held on for more than a month. I couldn't. At this point in time, too many things were obsolete. People would tell me to go to this newbie area, instead of this one, because it's newer, and equipment is better.
When I got to level 40, I started realizing several things no longer needed to be done. Several travel quests, were just there for "fun," but even then, it was just a waste of time to do, unless you wanted to appreciate a storyline, which apparently, these days, no one really cares about anymore.
I never got passed level 50, unfortunately, so I can't say much. The only point for me is, I could never stick to EQ2. Zones were empty, cities were dead. I suppose this is the consequence of having fully equipped guild halls. You don't ever see anyone.
To me, EQ2 is a game for fanboys, no one else. It's very difficult to get into. These days, players are expected to get to max level in order to get into the "True Gameplay." That's the common attitude, to race to the top... after all, that's where everyone is. Everything below that is a lonely world.
Unfortunately, I remained below that... and the lonely world at level 40-ish turned me away.
And by the way, I agree with a lot of opinions... too much artwork or CG is all the same, just different colors, EQ devs clearly have no sense of style. Seriously, every caster has that same damn stupid red sword spinning and exploding.
Vanguard is just a cheap imitation of EQ2 with a different skin to sucker more money out of gamers. Like my earlier post, EQ2 isn't exactly the best game to imitate either.

EQ2 is a bit of a mess of a game that has a small dedicated population that holds to the EQ flame after most of the peeps have departed. Vanguard is just a niche game that was patched into a decency but lacks a player base after a poor launch. My word for this thread. Move on folks for fantasy mmo I would hook up with FF XIV later in the year and give up on failed games of the past.
i played it a longer time after the official launch and it was a good oldskool mmorpg. i had a alot of fun but i would never play it again. besides this SOE patched it to some kind of wow-casual game.
There is an "abundance" of bad MMO's, not an "abundance" of good MMO's. The genre is not the problem. The genre is NOT flooded with good fantasy MMO's, the gaming community could use a good new fantasy MMO.
And "Why EQ2", OP asks? I cannot see why, myself. But EQ3, well, that could be another thing altogether.
Agreed.. EQ/EQ2 system is the same what the name says all quest you ever want .. adventures to be enjoy and discover.. EQ/EQ2 is not vanguard is not wow is EVERQUEST dont go assuming sames games rules apply.. Most problems is not the game itself is the player's style of play.. I have played several games but nothing compares to eq/eq2 the feel of the game itself.. now that eq2 is solo friendly I have enjoyed the game a lot more then when on release.. not been able to solo mobs and only having to nag to death for a group in guild or outside of guild lol.. The usage of the appearance window to dress your character as you like not having to be copy of x character.. fully 3d environment not a patch up 3D/2D world with semi 3D characters Like WoW... Smaller complex story line not like unstable story line of Vanguard.. Vanguard was a good idea that people inpatient people kill asking are you ready yet are you ready yet... Vanguard is semi cook Turkey .. everybody wanna a piece of it but never let it be cooked thoroughly and all you got is 3/4 worlds that dont correlate in anything cause all are unfinished.. The availability of people in server depends on playing hours and the server you select Antonia Bayle always full always someone to chat with and blast Gnolls and Orcs to next life lol..
SOE's blunders with the content of the game pale in comparison to how bad the engine is and how horrible it runs.
EQ2 is a great game, with loads of content, great lore, awesome dungeons. It just runs like absolute crap. You might be able to get it running smooth with no AA, no shadows, low resolution... but WTF?? To get the game to run decent it will look like crap and in 2010 that just doesn't cut it.
This is exactly true. Every word of it. Excellent game with the worst performing engine of any MMO out there. They fix the engine and I'd go back in a heartbeat.
"I'm not cheap I'm incredibly subconsciously financially optimized" "The worst part of censorship is ------------------"
The only thing EQ2 managed to do when it was created was start a trend among developers in how to clone quests and take shortcuts in design just to make a cheap buck. All spellcasters, no matter the class, use the same animations and every quest is a variation of the same 'ol "Kill X creatures for Y reward". The same cloned animations apply among the melee classes as well by the way.
That boring formula has chased off any intelligent gamers and the only ones left are a pack of elitists who spend their time farming and mocking any newcomers asking questions in general chat. Not to mention if you happen to try a pvp server, those same elitist farmers have insane twink alts that camp the newbie zones, killing all new players repeatably until they get bored.
So um, yah, great game to try out if you don't mind wasting your money.
fun thing about this comment is at release EQ2 didnt have alot of quests....well yes they had alot but you had to search for them (like OPs lore and legends book example, some better made than others), and most really just make you stay in one area doing what you wanted to do in the first place abit longer.
there used to not be question marks above NPCs heads, but had to hail them to see if they had a quest...if you even knew their language, or gained by inspecting furniture(jars, books, shelfs etc.)
solo quests were all in this kind, and you had to search for the thing you needed to kill, had to notice what kind of mob you needed in the quests (naming here can be a tad dull tho...aah I needed an enraged cow, not a tamed cow, damnit!)
solo questing over all were something you did while trying to find a group for all the dungeons which there is atleast 2 of for each tier, and most if not all going cross tiers, 15-25, 25 - 35....just for some rough numbers, which meant you had the choice and each place had their thing to find, so you would want to visit every single of them...or not and just power lvl your way through....your choice.
ow and rewards for the solo quests at release were really really not something you did the quests for, in lower lvls consisting mainly of consumeables....common crafted being better, than found in any solo quest....that have been changed tho.
either way EQ2 is like an old gem, turned into a cheap ride...end game being all about repeating instances for gear =( gear in the original game being almost secondary, if you could get hand of full set rare crafted set, you would almost be in the best gear...and the common crafted gear would get you very far.
I like a lot this game, it has greats graphics for an MMORPG, it's adictive and i play it a lot , i actualy like this game, because he has lots of quest and also the name say it everQUEST II....
To the poster who said Vanguard is just EQ2 rehashed by Sony:
This just proves how little you know in general. Vangaurd is NOTHING like Everquest 2. It has alot of similarity to early EQ 1, but that's about as close as you will get. What kills Vangaurd now (after having a legendary failure to deliver at launch) is a small community. The game itself, now that people can actually run it, is gorgeous.
You might want to play EQ2, honestly...trolls are a playable race there.
Vanguard is just a cheap imitation of EQ2 with a different skin to sucker more money out of gamers. Like my earlier post, EQ2 isn't exactly the best game to imitate either.
As a person with a max lvl raid ready toon in both games, I can say with certainty that this guy hasn't got a clue about VG.
And I'm not saying that EQ2 is worse or better, I like them both for different reasons. But to not know the vast differences in dungeon structure, combat systems or how the two complex crafting systems are different.......
Not to mention that a non-instanced world feels vastly different from an instanced one.....
Let me ask, is your guild hall in EQ2 non-instanced? Was it built by crafters? Was it only possible because you had a max level diplomat in your guild.....
This quote is just wrong.

Rofl'd at the "Trolls are a playable race there" post, but in all seriousness both VG and EQ2 are great games I would give either of them a try. The PvP server in VG is truely fun, while the arena for your puppets in EQ2 is pretty cool as well. (Haven't been back since they added PvP Minigames) but I hope it is amazing.
It has been a decade since I played Everquest and I am still pissed off. When I left the first EQ I vowed to never again play anything with the Everquest name or anything made by that company. The game seemed designed to piss people off and frustrate them, with lost levels, long corpse runs and a variety of other annoyances that were so unnecessary and so punitive that it boggled my mind. In addition to that, the developers constantly cranked out expansion after expansion while ignoring the outcry from the players about issues and bugs. There were simple bugs in the game that were incredibly frustrating and they never did fix. One of my friends lost 2 levels just trying to get his corpse back from where he died. My friends and I had a saying that sums up what seemed to be the company's view of their player's opinion. You're in our world now.....beyotch!
I know a lot of people really loved EQ and that is fine by me. When Dark Age of Camelot came around, I left and never looked back. Everquest II is just more of the same worthless crap they put out before with a new package.
Currently playing: Rift Played: SWToR, Aion,EQ, Dark Age of Camelot World of Warcraft, AoC
I played EQ II from the start. I think I am one of the few that liked it before they made all the changes.
Crafting required that you work with other crafters with different skills to make most anything. Most people hated that so they changed it so you did not need other people.
I enjoyed the system where you tried out your class with the subclasses. Most people hated that so they changed it.
There used to be a death penalty, most people hated it so they changed it.
I could go on but you get the idea.
So after all those changes I left the game. Sad really because I really liked it when it first started.
I downloaded and played the trial about 6 weeks ago and in that whole time I saw 4 other players run pass me at various stages. I didn't mind the game, but it was just so dead.
I started playing VG last week and it is totally pumping compared to EQII
Irreguardless of what MMO you decide to play, they have their faults and good points, but the commonality in all of them is the community. The community in each and everyone of them is us the players, so condemning a game because of the community is not really fair for the game in itself. We the people who subsribe and play these MMO's are the community and our behavior is what others see and experience in their game. If we can't be civilized and help one another, no matter what game we play, how can we expect others to do the same for us. Remember, we were all noobs at one time or another.

Oh, I think there are quite a few people in EQ 2. It's just that the game has been out for a bit like many level based games, is top heavy. Vanguard tends to mix it up in areas so you will see a greater variety of levels running around in one area.
I love the classes in EQ 2 and I love the idea that there are so many. Though part of me prefers a more "realistic" fantasy world such as LOTRO, there are times when you just want full on fantays, wizards, flying mounts lizard people, Necromancers, Paladins, etc.
EQ 2 has that.
But as I've mentioned, it's just a bit too cute for me. It's not harry potter but I can't help thinking "harry potter" when I play.
Quests that are similar to "mr. puddlewinks went into the cave and hasn't returned yet. could you help get him out"? Just grate on me a bit.
I suppose when I go into such a world I want it to be a little less whimsical unless I'm specifically there for the whimsy.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I would say EQ2 is probably the best MMORPG out right now. To the people who say it runs bad id ask can your system run any game that has been released in the last 2 years and has EQ2 type of graphics ? If not then EQ2 is not your problem. I got a decent PC and EQ2 runs awesome. If This game was released now with how well it runs and all the features it would be an instant hit but one thing you can never do id recover from a bad launch and EQ2, Vanguard, and several other Games suffer this fate.
Vanguard is awesome and if it had a real dev team from a company that cared to turn it into something great then it would be able to stick around for awhile with a good playerbase, but right now unless SOE makes it F2P the game wont be around 3 years from now.
The only thing EQ2 managed to do when it was created was start a trend among developers in how to clone quests and take shortcuts in design just to make a cheap buck. All spellcasters, no matter the class, use the same animations and every quest is a variation of the same 'ol "Kill X creatures for Y reward". So um, yah, great game to try out if you don't mind wasting your money.
I see you've never played the game.
"Imperious, choleric, irascible, extreme in everything, with a dissolute imagination of the like which has never been seen, atheistic to the point of fanaticism, there you have me in a nutshell and kill me again or take me as I am, for I shall not change. Never." (De Sade)
I am still playing EQ2, and I try almost every mmo that comes out, but EQ2 is still my favorite I think the mature community and amont of content really sets it apart. Also the commen goals of your guild, so everything is not just about you as some mmo's. I also love how it rewards you with bounes xp for caping more then one player class and crafting class.
Yup....and I'm right there with ya.
I read comments under articles on EQ2 on this site and all the time I end up wondering WTF game these other people are playing because it sounds NOTHING like the EQ2 I'M playing.....empty zones? On what server? Because mine isn't like that. Boredom? My god how could anyone get bored of this game? There's no TIME to be bored, I'm far too busy....there is just way way too many different things to do. The variety makes WoW (and assorted other games, for that matter) look like checkers to me.
But yet again....those of us that love EQ2 and have played it for a long time will read through yet another batch of posts with people saying things that make us all go, "Huh??" and we'll grin and bear it, because that's what we do. And then we'll happily log off of MMORPG.com, log back into the game and finish the night smiling. So hey....I really don't care what anyone else thinks of it, as long as I feel like I'm getting good value for MY entertainment dollar...it's all good at the end of the day.
For me....content is king, and imo....EQ2 has FAR more OF it than any other MMO I've played and I've played MOST of them.

I gave EQ2 several tries (4 to be exact)..
The game never held my attention.I had high hopes for it as I was an avid fan of the original, but
EQ2 is nothing like the original. The clunky physics of the avatar, the lay out of the land, the class skills,it was all just a total let down imo.
Ive said it in other posts that Vanguard has more of an EQ feel to it than EQ2 does, even though it has completely different lore to work with.
If I had to choose between EQ2 and VG?
Vanguard all the way.

I see you've never played the game.
"Imperious, choleric, irascible, extreme in everything, with a
dissolute imagination of the like which has never been seen,
atheistic to the point of fanaticism, there you have me in a nutshell
and kill me again or take me as I am,
for I shall not change. Never."
(De Sade)
