This week’s Community Spotlight focuses on the thread “The MMO Memories that make you cringe” by Azen77. In the thread, Azen77 polls the community on their worst MMO memories, though he put it in a far more interesting manner than I just did:
“Ever been thinking of going back to some beloved game? Reveling with a buddy over the nostalgia of how awesome it was, and how games aren't like they used to be, when suddenly you remember one of the ACTUAL tasks and are like, "OMG NOOOO!",throw up a little in your mouth, and say screw it because you remember some gameplay mechanic/experience that just turned you off forever?
Thought it would be interesting to see what people absolutely hated/despised about their MMO games to the point it makes your brain scramble to GTFO of your skull before being made to do that again. Here's some of mine off the top of my head.
· EQ2: Heritage Quests...
· EQ1: Camping specific species of animal to extinction, or at least what should have been extinction.
· AC1: The death animation and sound effect followed by the portal...permanaently scarred with both the humour of it and the pain of knowing I had no idea where I died...oh and finding my last taper...
· WoW: Quest hubs...I swear to god I'm never playing another game where I have to run around mindlessly clicking ! people to then just follow waypoints.
· Allods: Bag raid...! hubs...
· LoTR: Killing wolves...in every...freaking...zone...
· DaoC: c...r...a...f...t...i...n...g.......b...a...r...........”

Froced grouping and corpse retrieval in EQ 1 = ruined me forever,....
I died once in a party wipe way at the bottom of the Froglock? city/caverns This was a bout 12 years ago, then the whole party just ups and quits and leaves me there. I'm naked standing out front asking and asking in global if someone could please help me.
My "hero" will never beg again.
Buying Star Trek Online.
ROFL, great one....
My first pvp action in Wow only to find that the troll we finally killed just res'd at the local graveyard a short distance away.
When a one group of hibs in DAoC took over our Albion frontier and even with 5 groups we could do nothing about it, because of their expansion skills.
6+ hour AV's in vanilla WoW (oddly enough, I also count those as good memories at times).
The entire AoC launch. The whole damn thing.
Becoming a "Dread Lord" about 30 minutes into UO with my first character at launch because of laggy combat at a camped spawn point.
Corpse runs in EQ1.
The hacking/afk-macroing/generally crappy Darkfall community.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
Hm, when my first MMO guild, folks I really liked, suddenly began to use Teamspeak and chat went all dead, since I am not able to use TS and suddenly I lost contact entirely. It was horrible. I liked those guys and got along very well, but the force of habit was too strong... it was an experience which really scarred me. I got a vivid anti TS feeling ever since.
Also, camping various named boss mobs in EQ2, only to see them snatched away by some assholes. Anyone recalls that named fish in Enchanted Lands?
And the infamous NGE, of course. A mass-trauma!
loved the Lotro wolves quote...so true.
As for me...
I'd say WoW from 40-60. So utterly crap and grindy that it took me months to do it.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
The NGE.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
Camp grindng with guildies in EQOA and realizing I had been there for 26 hours!!!
WoW - opposing faction guilds guarding the entrances to specific end-game dungeons on PvP servers in Vanilla WoW. It got so bad at one point, I rage quit the game. That's the only time I've ever rage quit an MMO.
AoC - I had high expectations for this game and launch was one of the worst I've ever seen. Also, I was stupid enough to splurge on the collector's edition before it was released. Never again.
Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN
sto.... being told i "just dont get it"
IF THE ONLY DEFENCE FOR CRITICISM OF A GAME IS CALLING SOMEONE A TROLL OR HATER, THAT SAYS A LOT ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THE GAME
Lol there is only one game exualy and that is defently
Runescape
Everybody played it once.
It was my worced mistake ever to play that game
im a shamed
just sayed it
2 weeks after launch Vamguard had a double xp weekend, i played 36 hours straight went from lvl 32 to nearly 35. Game crashed i relogged and had lost all the xp and was back 32 and devs couldnt do anything to help i quit next day. We are sorry for this inconvenience it is a known issue and there is nothing we can do to give u back that xp and items u had found.
Spending an entire Sunday afternoon standing outside Molten Core in Warcraft trying to get 40 people gathered. We gave up after 4 hours.
Lol agreed, same for me.
Falling asleep at my desk grinding light blue mobs in Lineage 2.
Still some of my best experiences in MMO's have come from L2.
I do this constantly. I get all nostalgic and misty eyed over some MMO (at least a dozen and counting), go back to it and realise that I actually hate it.
The lotro comment made me laugh. You could add bears, boars and spiders to the list too.
Having to level anything in World of Warcraft without the Recruit-A-Friend buffs after doing it WITH them.
Having 2 World of Warcraft Account hacked in the same day and having to go through the process of getting them back. It drove me to buy one of those Authenticaters for my accounts.
Having my first level-capped character on World of Warcraft stolen from me and unrecoverable.
Laggy Shadowbane sieges.
Again, like many have said already. The games you remember the worst of times in are generally the games you remember the best of times in. Every 'amazing' experience I've had in an MMORPG has almost always come from Shadowbane despite its gigantic load of flaws right out of the box. And even though I maintain that WoW is mediocre-to-decent as far as an entire game goes, I always end up going back for some reason, so.
hehe, anyone remebers Darkandlight , the pioneer and the launchdays, and no Ati- graphiccard support ?
in a noob group in SWG before the viecle patch...
heading towards the tuskan fortress (my first time there really pumped)
walked for 1.5 hours just to find out that our "guide" had the wrong co-ords
but it was really fun and really horrible at the same time.
but probably the worst thing.. was in wow when i was head of the warlock union in a guild that i really enjoyed playing with.
logged on ready to raid only to figure out that my GL had slept with one of the officers wife (in RL) and there was a huge ass guild drama. which was forcing me to choose sides. at that point i stoped playing for a long long time.
and the really funny/sad thing about this Wow drama story was that we where a multy nation guild that had played togeather for a little over a year. all good friends.. and that weekend we actually had a big lan event where people living in the same country hooked up and got drunk and played together.
GL ended up screwing one of the officers wife in the basement of there place they where playing at.. while that officer and couple other guildis where doing a drunk UBRS speed runn.
thus splitting a community of little over 60 people. aaa memmories
Sorry for typos... dyslexic and just too damn lazy to proof read every post for 30 min
(yes i am aware of spell check but it does not help that much
NGE, enough said ............
Collector of old minis.
Playing WAR:Age of Rekoning
www.oldtimersguild.com
ultima online "trammel"
whole Horzons expectation build up and battles (great crafting by the way)
Have no fear, Xru is here.
EQ1: Dying 20 times on a corpse run because I was lead through a high level area and my guide went offline
EQ2: Seeing the hair styles
DAoC: Quiting
STO: Reaching admiral within 10 days and realizing that there is nothing else the game offers me
LotR: Seeing that was too much like WoW
WoW: Grinding through 5 lvl 70s and 2 lvl 80s
AoC: Seeing that after lvl 20, the game screws you by sending you to your "homeland" and you have to walk to other locations to get a decent group
TabulaRasa: Logging in just to log out after I realized that I was bored with that game
CoH/CoV: Realizing how redundant the missions were
CO: Realizing I just bought CoH2
SWG: Realizing that I was paying a monthly fee to work in game for virtual credits
"Rehab is for quitters."
Pre-ordering MO... worst idea ever.
Yep pretty much sums it up.
