CURRENTLY PLAYING: WORLD OF WARCRAFT
Why? Because its the most populated and polished game on the market period. It runs on every machine I own, and its the game with the largest amount of people that I know personally and in game. It is the easiest to jump into for someone with a busy life outside of playing games. I enjoy the art style, and the animations are the best in any game to date. The game runs as smooth as butter and I almost never have bugs or glitches. I enjoy the PVP in it, even though over recent years the game has become "easier" its still the best option for me, compared to the other games like it.
GAMES I'VE TRIED and Why I didn't like them.
(in no particular order)
FFXI: I DO like this game. I just don't have time for it at this stage. I don't have time for forced grouping anymore, and need to option to solo (not just with fields of valor). I want to be able to "adventure" solo sometimes, and you just can't do that in this game. I love the music in this game more than any other MMO, and I'm waiting on FFXIV.
Vanguard: This game is huge, no instances. But, its still poorly optimized considering its age. It runs "better" than it did a year ago, but it still runs like crap on my pc. I have a pretty hefty machine, and even though it looks amazing.. the "hitching" is annoying. I'm one of those people who does other tasks while they play, and alt tabbing out of this game is the slowest and painful thing ever. I've fell through the world a dozen times or more on the isle, and it still feels like a ghost town even with the influx of new players, and this is on the ISLE where it should be the most populated. I also hated the music. That was probably the game breaker. I enjoy listening to the game music in games, and the voice overs and the music were all ear grating. And, there's no PVP (its not a PVP game.. but I still like to have the option)
Everquest 2: This game is just "ugly" to me for some reason. I just don't like the graphics. Everything looks like plastic, and the character run speeds has always irked me. Aside from that, if I'm going to play WoW.. why not just play WoW? If that makes any sense.. this is not the only game in this list I got that feeling from. There are a few good things about EQ2, but none that make them worth my time. The biggest thing going for it is the housing to be honest.
Lord of the Rings Online: The world graphics were outstanding, the character animations were terrible and the combat itself just felt very clunky compared to WoW. And again, the mechanics of it are almost identical to WoW save the story oriented nature of the instances/quests which was cool. I never could make myself get into it because well.. I already know the story and what is going to happen, and again.. no decent PVP.
Age of Conan: The graphics here are incredible. However the world was just completely linear for me. I did feel immersed in the world at first.. but that quickly faded. The combo system was also cool at first until I realized just how useless in PVP it is. Casters destroy all. It was also one of the games I lagged the most in, making PVP impossible.
Fallen Earth: I wanted to like this, but the graphics were just too "sameish" and dull. I think thats why fantasy games are usually more common. There's alot more you can do with the setting to make the areas different. The combat was also pretty horrid. I don't like fenced off PVP either.
EVE: I knew I wouldn't like this from the start. Not a big fan of space games, and thats really all there is to it. I'm sure its an amazing game if your into that kind of thing.
WARHAMMER: Another game I wanted to like, but it was just too.. how do you say it? It didn't feel much like an MMO, everyone looked too much alike and there was very little to do other than grind scenarios. Even for someone who likes PVP this isn't that fun without supplementary stuff to do.
AION: The vendor "bubbles" during beta killed this for me. I also wasn't a fan of the graphics style. Thats about it.
everything I tried was not worth mentioning as it was either F2P and required a huge cash investment or just didnt cut the mustard after about 5 minutes in game.

I'm not playing anything. I've played a lot in my day, as you can see from my sig, but none of them are the game I want to spend my time and money on so I don't play at all. I want a massive sci-fi game that allows tons of freedom, has a great, mature community and doesn't make me feel like I'm wasting all my time mindlessly grinding away.
That game doesn't exist, therefore I don't play.
Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more
Now Playing: None
Hope: None
The most current mmo that I have played is some of the many FTP garbage out there. I'm not currently playing anything due to lack of interest in current mmo's. A couple did peak my interest, CO, STO, AOC, MO, and many other titles I cannot think of at the moment. In all honesty the game that is keeping my interest the most is a FPS, looking forward to Global Agenda patch 1.3, SWTOR, and Earthrise.
Exocide
RIght now I am playing Entropia Universe. Im not playing for the money, or for the fantastic combat moves, or any of that jazz. Im playing because the world is so ridiculously deep that understanding it may well take months. I havnt felt like this about a game since Asheron's Call and Ultima Online. Hooray for gigantic game worlds that actually have room for character growth over time!
Why am I not playing the others?
I had hoped the massive world of Darkfall would be my virtual home, and from promises made through development it easily would have been. But even the basics there when the game was actually released were not all that great. I found the game really shallow.
I played Perfect World, JD, Neo Steam, World of Kungfu, and others. I never really liked WoW. These held my attention only briefly.
I played DDO, but I cant stand instances. Age of Conan I disliked for the same reason.
Laudanum - Romance. Revenge. Revolution.
Crappy, petty people breed and raise crappy, petty kids.
What am iplaying now? Nothing
Why am I not playing any games? They suck.
I know this is a rather simplistic post but no matter how many eloquent words I could use, "nothing" and "they suck" sum my feelings up quite well, without wasting your time with a wall of text.

I'm playing two of your strike-outs:
Lord of the Rings Online: I suppose I enjoy this because, while I do like PvP, it's not critical to me enjoying a game. I like the small details in the world, the overall atmosphere, and the gameplay (as a Warden and a Minstrel... come on, where else can you kill animals with music alone!?). If you played it before SoM, I can understand how the combat might be considered clunky, but it's definitely more responsive now. It plays like WoW, but unless you're sick of WoW's gameplay or you really enjoy PvP, you'll probably enjoy LotRO. Enough people consider it boring though, and that's okay.
EVE Online: I don't care that it's in space; in fact, it provides a nice deviation from LotRO's rolling green hills, crystal blue waters, and gleaming white stone. Also, since it's basically the opposite of LotRO, I can get from it what I don't get from Turbine's jewel: meaningful PvP, freeform character development, complexity, and tactical combat.
I suppose you could say I play EVE to be frustrated and annoyed when I lose a ship and I play LotRO to relax and immerse myself in a wonderfully crafted fantasy world.
World of Warcraft: I really don't know exactly why I stopped playing this. I first got bored back in 2008, after playing for about a year, and, drawn by WAR's hype like a moth to a candle, I bailed in September. WAR lasted a good 5-6 months, much longer than other people, and I did enjoy it, but it had too many problems and eventually I quit. Then, seeing how AoC had (seemingly) improved from launch and noticing its free trial, I had a run with it and subbed. However, that didn't last longer than 3 months, and I found myself without an MMO for a while, playing single-player RTS and RPG games. Eventually, I decided to try WoW again last summer, and I got back into it. Bought Wrath, leveled my hunter up to 80, joined an amazing guild, and started raiding. Right around Christmas, I broke up with my girlfriend and after that, I really didn't feel like playing much anymore (since we used to play WoW together). I just kind of left with a formal goodbye only to my guildmates.
WAR: As I said above, I liked the game, but it had too many problems. Mythic seems to be slowly, but surely, improving, so I'm definitely keeping an eye on it and will likely return in a few patches (if I like what I see). Honestly, despite WAR, I still like Mythic and I hope they do well in the future.
AoC: Nice graphics, interesting lore, and boobies are nice, but I stalled and couldn't gather the motivation to level past 38. I don't know why. It's like I ran out of gas a bit after Tortage, and I could never refill. Ah well.
RuneScape: Heh, I think everyone's tried RS at least once for at least 5 minutes in their life. This was my first MMO and definitely still one of my favorites, despite its shortcomings. Its quests are unrivaled (since they actually tell a story and they require you to do more than kill 10 rats or talk to the nearby NPC; they really feel like adventures), its skill variety means there's plenty to do, and (if you're a member), there are a good number of diversions and mini-games. I quit before they took the Wildy out or put the Grand Exchange in because I was attracted by DAoC, but I played for a good 2-3 years.
Dark Age of Camelot: Sweet, sweet DAoC. Luckily for me, I picked this game up after ToA, so I had no idea how the game was before it. With a clean slate, I enjoyed the game immensely. My Paladin and Thane will live in my heart forever, and I'm even considering going back now that the smaller servers have been amalgamated into one mega-server cluster of RvR awesomeness. Besides the RvR, I loved the lore and the authenticity of the world - one reason why I'm attracted to LotRO now. I never really got bored with the game, but I did stop playing eventually to check out the big kid on the block - WoW - and you know the story from there.
I also tried a myriad of other MMOs, like CoH/CoV, Vanguard, and some F2P ones, but I didn't spend enough time there to really comment.
Darkfall Online:
freedom
no skill cap
no hard caps
virtual world
indie developer
nice feeling after logging out even I just crafted
ffa pvp
intelligent mobs
no fast travel, instances
Still keeping an eye on Aion though I don't like the 1.9 changes so we'll have to wait and see.
EvE: unbelievable freedom its like Darkfall in space. Just I can't get used to the "one world server" so I switched to Darkfall which is basically EvE in a fantasy setting.
Lord of the Rings: two easy, instanced, quest based and not many endgame options (1 raid?)
World of Warcraft: Blizzard gone greedy since Activision joined. The topnotch devs are gone and Wotlk has been a desaster.
Age of Conan: marvelous graphics, hated the small instanced world and couldn't get used to this fast paced bomat system
. Risk vs reward totally broken.
Warhammer Online: expected Daoc with a Warhammer skin, got a dumbed down WoW with a Warhammer skin, full of bugs.
Everquest 2: shouldn't be even named Everquest because its just a disgrace to the best game ever made.
Vanguard: simple no Sigil -> no abo.
Aion: Great game not enough endgame stuff and too much pvp focus.
Ultima Online: Mythic destroyed it.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play."
"Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
EverQuest 2: To me, EQ2 has all that I want in an MMO. The graphics are good and play up my computer specs. The content, be it the amount of races/classes/areas is huge. The community is mature and friendly. I know it's a lot like most themeparks out there right now, but the factors that set it apart are the great housing and appearance slots, and how the quests go with the lore and make storylines.
FFXI: My fav MMO. The only reason I'm not playing it is I've burned out on party grinding, and the time constraint I have.
EVE: The fact you play as a spaceship and you have to wait real time to advance skills is a turn off for me. I loved the idea of the game, but those two things ruined it for me.
Anarchy Online: Another favorite of mine. The game's low population makes it's future unsure for me, and I would like to play a game that will still have players to play with years from now.
Mabinogi: I love Mabinogi and it's gameplay, but it wasn't updated nearly enough. And that it was F2P.
Playing - EVE, Wurm
Retired - Final Fantasy XI, Anarchy Online, Mabinogi
Waiting - ArcheAge, Salem
Currently playing: Nothing. Why? Because all the games that keep coming out just suck, all the developers only want money now and dont make good games, just simple, shallow games trying to get millions of subs.
I might pick up Vanguard again while waiting for Mortal Online to get released and polished up abit before i start it.
Currently Playing Path of Exile
Playing:
Age Of Conan
-Immersive, dirty, and barbaric. And I can play for shorter periods of time if necessary.
Not playing (anymore):
Darkfall
-love the game, but simply don't have the kind of time that I used to, to be able to sit and play pretty much every day for 5+ hours.
SWG
-it's ruined. 'nuff said.
LOTRO
-not a bad game, but too "happy" for me. Doesn't have a steel-and-blood feel to it. I can't bear killing more bears/wolves/boars/spiders.
Anarchy Online
-too old. Also, the combat system is just too slow for me these days, especially after AoC and Darkfall.
I have a massive list of games I've tried, or even played for a while and don't anymore, but I think this is prolly good enough for this thread's purposes.
I see a red door and I want to paint it black...

Currently Playing: World Of Warcraft
Wasn't at all interested in leaving my home in StarWars Galaxies until the NGE hit. Apparently this feature or that feature from WoW got the peeps at SOE so excited, they gave it the ultimate endorsement by attempting to copy it. Since my beloved SWG was utterly nuked, I decided to see what John Smedley was raving about. And you know what? He was (sort of ) right!
On one hand SWG was so utterly borked, it made WoW look like shangri-freaking-la. On the other hand, seeing the same blatent copy-cat systems being added to SWG in such a haphazard manner it made the actual systems SOE was copying look like shangri-freaking-la!
So thanks Smed for finding me a game that works!
Anyways, I was fortunate enough to find a decent group of people to play with. That really makes the game for me ultimately.
Star Wars Galaxies
First MMORPG I ever played. Best MMORPG (maybe the best game period) I've ever player (pre-NGE)
Not gonna get into why I left. Ya'll can probably guess.
City Of Heroes/Villains
A friend bought this for me for Christmas. Good solid game. A little shallow. Ran well on my PC. Looked really great up against SWG post NGE!
Auto Assault
Not an MMORPG, but a cool game non-the-less. To bad the RPG elements were so weak. Too bad it was made dead
Tabula Rosa
Had high hopes for this one. Couldn't get into it though. Not enough RPG (not even a /sit emote).
Aion
Invisible walls... in a world where everyone has freaking wings, we are confined by invisible walls. Not cool.
Star Trek Online
Thank GOD I got to play the beta before paying to play this turd of all turds (EVEN up against SWG NGE!!! OMG!!!! Very smart move of SOE to have a vet trial around the same time as STO launch)
Age of Conan: Played it at release, got bored at around lvl 50 because it lacked content, which was pretty much the only reason. Started it again some days ago and it's fun! Combat is nice and smooth, quests are fine and Open-PvP is fun so far.
Neocron: Played it at release and I had a great time. But somehow there was not enough content and I quit. Today the game is rather unsupported. :-(
World of Warcraft: Solid title but right now there is nothing I can do in it. PvP is pretty senseless and I don't want to raid... I'll check back at cataclysm release. What I don't like about WoW is the gear-dependence. Gear is just a too important factor in this game.
Lord of the Rings Online: Well it's nice and such. But somehow it didn't catch me for too long. Maybe it's because I had the feeling that I had to grind to be able to level alone (sometimes I'm not online for a long enough time to look out for a group). Plus... combat was rather boring and unsurprising.
Pirates of the Burning Sea: Very cool game but combat is too slow. The 100000th time you need to sail close to other ships to combat them it gets boring.
EvE Online: Combat is BOOORRING! Apart from that it's a good game.
Warhammer Online: Nice on release, got bored of it at endgame. I guess I don't enjoy zerging. Unfortunately melee classes had a VERY hard time during keepfights... last time I checked back the servers were dead, felt like a singleplayer game.
Ultima Online: Was good several years ago, now a rather dead and dated game. Combat needs an overhaul...
Guild Wars: I love it but I have pretty much experienced most content already. And somehow I miss a friend to play it with. Nevertheless I will definately check out GW2.
Darkfall: It didn't catch me. I don't know... it's somehow cool that the NPCs behave smart but on the other hand it gets on my nerves if just 1 out of 2 arrows hit because the NPCs move ridiculous. In addition the community seems to be bad, even compared to other MMOs. By the way I don't like the fact that everybody can learn any skill to max...
Global Agenda: I would buy it and probably even subscribe to it... if the client wouldn't crash on a regular basis. I will see if a patch is going to solve this issue.
Everquest 2: Gets somehow boring to just level all the time. In Europe the game is very dead in early to mid levels so you are playing alone most of the time.
Aion: Feels too grindy past level 20 and I don't like that you can only fly in particular zones... it makes no sense at all! For a rather PvP based game it seems to be too gear-dependent.
Fallen Earth: Combat was ok, but not good. Crafting was nice to some extent, but in a post-apocalyptic world I expect permanent item-decay. The game felt a bit "grey", don't know how to comprehend... in terms of gameplay I mean.
Star Wars Galaxies: World is too large and empty, you feel lost very often. I didn't know what to do in this game. Oo
Auto Assault: Nice action, but there was NO content for end-game at release... and not much content in general. Sad that the game is offline nowadays.
Tabula Rasa: All I am supposed to do is conquering outposts, which gives me what bon
Playing: Nothing.
Why?: Newer games don't appeal to me and older games have changed in a way that also does not appeal to me.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
Currently subscribed to WoW and Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. Currently playing Runes of Magic O.o
I came back to VG with the After Hours guild, and it was amazing for about three days, and then the game just felt depressing. It's this huge world where you only encounter like 2-6 people per zone where I've personally seen a max of eleven people in the same area at the same time. There was tons of group content, and I mean great group content (amazing dungeons, fun quest, challenging mobs), but it was difficult to get anything going and when I did get something going, I noticed I was grouping with the same 5 other people over and over again. The solo quests are few in number, but they're decent. Some are a drag though as the game harkens back to the days of long camps and low drop rates.
I've been subscribed to WoW since January and have a 76 Hunter, but I just....well I just can't seem to force myself to play that game any more than running a couple of dungeons two or three times a week. I planned to be 80 after the first two weeks of summer, so I could begin the gear grind towards raid progression, but at this rate, I'm gonna be lucky to even hit 80 by the end of the summer.
Installed Runes of Magic tonight and after actually playing it for more than 30 minutes (slow start), it's probably one of, if not the best, F2P experiences I've encountered. My only problem is the combat just isn't satisying for some reason, there's a hefty amount of server lag, and the game performs poorly for a game that isn't all that graphically impressive.
I'm playing a player run T2A UO when I do MMO these days, but mostly been playing none MMO's this year like Mass Effect 2 Mount and Blade Warband. I'm not playing the other MMO's, old or new, as a lot of it is just bland or I'm jaded with. The Uo I still dabble in beats with the hearts of the players and still comes alive like it was back in the T2A era.
Playing : Mabinogi
Actually just went back recently. One of the few F2Ps that I like. And since no P2Ps has appealed to me lately (or my sub just ran out and I don't want to continue), I sort of took a break from the P2P market and wait for something else to come out. That said, Mabinogi is definitively one of my top game.
I really like the gameplay which is definitively harder than most MMOs, the game is more of a hybrid between Sandbox and Themepark, giving the player a very large amount of freedom but the game still has a large Storyline (which is actually interesting and requires players to read rather than skipping it for a reward (as cheap as the reward may be)) and it's somewhat group-focused, which is very important for me. Major downside though is the anime graphics.
Not playing:
DarkFall : Sub ran out few weeks ago and I grew tired of the mindless grind. When I joined 6 months ago, I wanted to play a PvP-focused MMO with a harsh death penality but turns out the game was more PvE-focused with occasional FFA PvP (+End-game PvP)
EVE : Not much to say about EVE. I gave the game a chance (Trial) and I just couldn't get into it. The offline skill advancement bothered me a little too but that's just personal opinion.
Warhammer: Loved Tier 1, lost interest afterwards and I can't see myself replaying the same Scenario in T1 over and over again.
Fallen Earth : I just couldn't get into that one either. The combat system really bothered me by combining aim-based with a computer calculated dodge rate, I just don't think the 2 goes well together. It sorts of defeats the purpose of actually aiming. The automatic crafting system also really bothered me, being a Dedicated Crafter, I just couldn't stand just waiting 30 minutes for an invisible robot to finish crafting my items while I'm walking around gathering more materials.
WoW: I just couldn't get into this game. Not my thing.
Dungeon & Dragon Online : Can't get into it either. I got bored very quickly for some reason (even though I LOVE the Bard class)
Dungeon Fighter Online: After having completed the PvE missions over and over again in order to find the "right character" for me, it got really dull and all the PvE missions can quickly become a great barrier preventing you from joining PvP matches, which is what I prefer the most about DFO.
Pretty much sums it up.
