Hmmm...probably a tossup between the Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, and Icewind Dale series for me.
Boy that kind of sucks consideirng how long its been since those came out and how many games in the genre have come out since then.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

Well, while i may not agree with you about shadowrun, i totally agree about the PnP style of games, though next to AD&D, my own favourite was Traveller.. its true though, no MMO or singleplayer pc game really has ever captured the experience of those games, Paper, Dice, Pencils/Pens + Beer & Crisps those were definitely the days.
Someone really needs to bring out a game (like a better NWN) for us to get back the P&P experience again. Multiplayer DM-run RPG FTW.

Planescape Torment, hands down. Amazing and unpredictable story + a real game to play. Nowdays we have these dragon ages and mass effects but they have no such depth in a game design there was in games like Torment or even in Baldur's Gate series.
Something I still havn't finished lol. Extremely long game (even without the 2 expansions), lots of depth and story, and is one of the few "recent" rpg's that is actually a challenge too.
It's a bit slow the first few Acts, and I didn't have all the *much needed* updates applied, so that made it kind of hard to get into when I first bought it, but now after a few years everything has been patched/fixed and I've finally learned to apperciate it in all it's glory.

Amen
BG1 for me as 1st choice and Torment as 2nd.
For a more recent game I'd say Morrowind over Oblivion, and I'd even mention Mass Effect (though I dislike SF settings)
For me, a few of the usual suspects, which have been mentioned by others, like some of the FF & DW games & Chrono Trigger.
Outside of that id say:
Most of the Suikoden series
Rogue Galaxy
Dark Cloud
Metal Saga
Shining Force (including the newer action series on Playstation like Shining Force EX)
Seiken Densetsu series
Breath of Fire series
woot woot shining Force is simply pure classic very very very good and the only other turn based combat games i have enjoyed since is the fire emblem series (English ones of course..talk about replay value)
Lately I would have to say Risen and Demon's Souls (RPG-lite) occupies most of my RPG playing time... VTMB is one of my all time favorites though, as is Morrowind. =D

I really enjoyed Baldurs Gate I and II, NWN I, FF (6,7,9) and replays of Baldurs Gate II.
I really enjoyed the Divine Divinity series.
One of the few games I actually played all the way through.

I did not like NWN as a single player game. On a PW server, it was fantastic.
