I used a free trial key and it is asking for a payment method. Do you not have to buy the game after the trial? It says a monthly fee of 12.95 will be applied after the free month is up or something. But it says 14 day trial at the top

Yes you need to make a account with a working CC. After you make the trial account just cancel the payment method so you dont get billed after your trial.
But does that mean that after the trial it just starts paying and you don't have to buy the game or anything?
not sure how the trial works.....but for the free month i think its after purchaseing the game.
It works the way the standard for MMOs was for a long time, only recently games have started not requiring a credit card.
You get the free trial, you enter payment information. At the end of the trial it automatically charges you for the next month subscription and you keep going. Or you cancel it before that time and never pay a dime.
No you do not have to buy a game client.
