oops, actually meant for there to be words in that last post, lol

the reason for the name Final Fantasy was that when the 1st game was about to be released, Squaresoft was on the verge of bankruptsy & FF was going to be thier swan song so to speak, but instead it became the company's savior

What a useless excerpt from the article.  It is so heavily biased and misinformed I don't even have a glimmer of interest in reading the whole article.

Hey guys, lets make random generalizations and then write an article about it!  Sounds fun!

    /rant off.

More of a rant than an article. Horribly unfocused and incoherent.

Does something like "The question now resounds, "Why not just make this an expansion to FFXI instead of calling it FFXIV if you are already using the same world?"" even warrant a reply? How exactly can someone argue that a game running on a different graphics engine, with new battle systems, quest systems, skill systems, UI, etc etc etc can be made as an "expansion" instead? Ludicrous.

I hate to flame but that is seriously a very, very bad wall of text. Take some English and literature classes. And then learn some video game fundamentals.

Thanks for the great article, very well written.

I've been a lifelong fan of the Final Fantasy games, played ever single one of them, from number 1 thourgh to number 13, the only one i missed out was numer XI! So this is going to be my first FF MMORPG, despite the fact that i have been playing MMO's for over 10 years now. The reason i didn't play XI was simply because i did not have the money at the time.

That said, i did play a little, just not enough, and i know other who played XI. I hope XIV changes enough in the lore to warrant another release, and I hope first and foremost that it is DIFFICULT. If this game does flop however, i think now would be the perfect chance to jump on number XI, so we'll see.

FInal Fantasy is called that way because Square was going out of business. It was going to be their last game (Final Fnatasy) - The game was a hit, they continued as it became more and more popular.

I'm excited for FF14. Been playing XI for a long time and the reason its not an expansion is because the PS2 sucks in terms of technical hardware. They can't upgrade without ***ing everything up.

Yes Square nearly went bankrupt in the 80s hence the whimsical name for the series. Sigh...I wish people would stop bumping this really bad news article, I think we have clearly establishedthat it was written by an online journalist who clearly knows next to nothing about FF, but was maybe trying to write a filler piece on the hot upcoming XIV mmorpg, but with no real news in hand.

We must make way for the new, we cannot be stuck in the past. FFXI will have to go away some time. FFXIV will need to take over. its a part of life! FFXI players will need to accept this and move on to FFXIV if they wish.

    LOL at the article,

I am an alpha/beta tester to FFXIV , and I played FFXI from 2003-2006 and I have to say that Eric Barnett's article is full of BS. The man did not take the time to actually do some research before typing a full article about 1 player's point of view about the two games with no refrence or research. And then post it on the front page.

Eric Barnett you need to check your facts and information before writing articles.
