They put out an announcement on the AC boards the same day as the LotRO announcement. In summary no they don't plan on making AC f2p.
Basically AC is a much older engine and it would take a large investment to switch it over to f2p, which represents much greater risk then switching a game as big as LotRO over. Also none of the mechanics are of a design that meshes well with F2P model, so they'd have to significantly redesign a lot of the game.
Overall I don't think AC has much to gain from F2P, it is an older game with older graphics. It represents a style of MMO that isn't mainstream. F2P tends to bring in a lot of kids (since they can't pay for games), and kids want solid graphics. It also brings in people who generally aren't that into MMOs, but they will play one that is free. And for them to be attracted it has to be a mainstream highly popular game. AC still attracts the type of people who enjoy the AC style, switching to F2P probably wouldn't attract a ton of new people (mostly just those who stop in to run around for nostalga and don't ever buy anything) and would likely chase off the people who currently play. Essentially it would probably kill the game.
What will be next? It's hard to tell, first the companies must calculate how much more $ they can make by doing so.
The biggest potential though (I think) lies within Warhammer - but will EA make a bold move? They're taking quite big steps in f2p world so maybe, maybe.
