Star Wars: The Old Republic: E3 2010: EA Press Conference Reveals Starships and PvP

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

MMORPG.com just left the EA E3 Press Conference where two new tidbits of information were released. The first is that starships will be available to players. The second is that PvP will take place in "War Zones."

image

Not a great deal of information was released on either. The starships, we are told, will be similar to player housing in that they will be persnalizable and will serve as your character's base of operations. We were also told that this is how your player travels across the galaxy. What wasn't mentioned, however, is the means by which this is accomplished and the announcement should at this time in no way be construed as to be confirmation of traditional space flight and/or combat.

War zones, it would seem, are contested areas that pitt the Empire and the Repulic against one another in ground based PvP battle. The impression that I was left with after hearing what they had to say and the way that it was presented was that the War Zones would function in a style similar to Battlegrounds or Warhammer Online's scenarios. HOwever, as was the case with startship, this has not yet been confirmed.

Did you guys see the new trailer in the conference? Is it as epic as I've heard it is? I know it's been leaked but I am waiting for a high quality version to come out before I watch it... 8)

Being a captain of a ship is awesome. I wonder how will they handle traveling. Will it be like that galaxy map in mass effect?

Unfortunately I couldnt get an invite to the EA Press Event but i'll be on the floor tomorrow.

Glad they have some added information on how pvp will play out. I was slighlty bothered by the trailer though, the CG was more realistic where as the actual game style is completely different (toon). Not a big fan of that.

    From G4TV

BioWare and LucasArts dropped more information about Star Wars: The Old Republic, and this game has us drooling badly. Bibs should be handed out when they preview this title.

    • Every player gets his or her own startship, woot! Can I call the Millenium Falcon? Ships will serve as a homebase for players.

    • PvP takes place in warzones. Jedi or Sith? Republic or Empire? You decide.

    • The first Warzone will be on Alderaan.

    • Hands-on at the EA booth starting tomorrow at E3.

    • They debuted a new trailer, "Hope", which looks better than all of the prequel movies combined.

    • A female Jedi in the trailer stops a lightbsaber with her bare hands. What the? Force Unleashed II who?

Every player, regardless of their chosen class, will get their own starship to command across the galaxy. Always dreamed of flying a Corellian vessel? Choose the Vanguard class when playing. Or maybe you've had some sort of sick dream where you gangster walk through the galaxy aboard an Imperial transport (if so, choose the Sith Fury class).Of course, it would be pretty boring to have an entire galaxy packed with a handful of similar ships.

To combat this, BioWare has created a robust customization package so that you can fully trick out your ship with premade gear sets or your own hand-picked items. Though BioWare isn't showing off the ships in action just yet, they assure us that there will be thousands of different variations so that each person can feel as if they have a unique vessel.

Starships as a base of operations could mean.   Cutscenes like we saw in KoToR.  No actual space flight mechanics, just a means to get from point A to point B with a cutscene of you doing it.

Glad to hear PvP will be in dedicated environments, if this game is something i decide to play the last thing I want is griefing to put up with.  The ship idea sounds fantastic, I wonder how much customization will be allowed.  Good to know some information is starting to trickle out!

You don't have 1000's of possible variations of ships through customization just for cinematics, babe.

    Thanks for the info Stradden.

@DeaconX, that's actually a very interesting point. I've had a feeling for awhile that (initially) SWTOR's space flight would consist of some sort of player housing with cinematics used to depict your ship going from planet to planet. Essentially a taxi ride. Now you got me thinking.

This would be incredible amazing! Especially to the billions of people like me out there that were looking for a game with intricate detail on player housing. Imagine the roleplay possibilities.....

Hopefully they allow you to have people board your ship. Party time anyone? lol

This I understand as well, because it gives people the wrong Idea of the game layout. Then again though I did like the cinematic as well. The only reason why I am agreeing with this though is because people do not have enough common sense because they base a game off of the trailer.

So now that is possibly what they expecting the game to be. I say his as well because I myself personally know a few people who base the game off of a trailer, which is completely wrong. Then they rant and rave because it wasn't the same.  *sigh*...

Or http://www.swtor.com/media/trailers/hope-cinematic-trailer and skip the commercial!

Gametrailer's has a much higher resolution for streaming videos though. Downloading the 720p one from SWTOR.com looks great tho

The trailer was so beautiful, I think it was even better than the vanilla wow trailer!!!

The new trailer is at least as good if not better than the first one... the level of epic awesome is well off the charts.

Have not seen anybody say anything to the contrary of it being a customizable inside - cut scene travel - instanced - etc.

    Anybody have anything on that?

Think about it this way. With thousands of differant cusomizations that a player will be able to do to their ship, if it was just an instanced thing, then how would we even be able to see another person's ship and know it was just like my own. So hopefully they will give more information about that. I can only hope that we will be able to pilot the ship from planet to planet as well as explore. It would even be better with some type of space combat, be it pve or pvp, but only time will tell.

Man, I would be happy with the ability to pilot the ship from planet to planet mixed with a little bit of exploration. I could easily wait on the space combat. Can't wait to see how all of this turns out.

If you were to go inside their ship and see that it was just like your own...

...the images they showed during the conference are static and parked.  It could literally be a case of saying looked at my parked ship, pretty cool yeah?

ALl the threads about the ships have people continuing to hope /ask for info about space combat.. but hasnt Bioware said several times that there will be NO space combat. If so, yeah this seems like it will basically be a house that "moves", though likely on rails (pick a destination and it moves there for you), not that you actually pilot and fly around and explore in. It would be kind of pointless to make them pilotable if there is going to be no form of space combat anyway, it would just be flying around looking at pictures with no interaction with anything you see.
