That was bloody depressing, pathetic excuse for a performance.

I guess the English players didn't get the memo that they had a game today against Algeria.  :(

I'm beginning to think that ref was paid off. No one in their right fucking mind could say those were good calls.

Well, one thing is for sure. Soccer isn't making a very good case that it is exciting. They have had about 18 games and 8 or 9 of them have been ties. Sorry but ties are boring and even worse is when it's a 0 -0 tie. I really am trying to give soccer a shot here with all the coverage we are getting but it just ain't happening for me. Oh well, I will keep watching for now since there really isn't any other sports on right now. Let's hope for some exciting matches instead of ties. Peace.

After the group stage, matches cannot end in a draw  and the matches that finish regulation tied are some of the most exciting events in all of sports.

So something really weird happened. I was waiting for my new couch to be delivered and while waiting absolutely nothing was on. I figured what the heck, I'll try soccer. It happened to be Cameroon and Denmark playing. Obviously I could care less but the two delivery drivers that showed up and put the couch together were from Cameroon!!! OMG, how crazy is that. So I told them to sit down on the new couch and have some drinks. It sure did make for a different atmosphere watching people who were really excited to be watching the game. I think I got more excited in this game than I did during the U.S. game. Anyways they could only stay until halftime but we had fun. Too bad while they were out driving and making other deliveries their team lost :(

    Laters.

This is a crazy WC this team around.  Lots of drama.  NZ tieing Italy?!  WTF.   Now we have Frances team director quiting and French players refusing to train.   ::sigh::

Anyway...Brazil plays next.  Let's hope they actually play this match.   Last match was not so good.

Okay now this is a good thread ...I tried to start one earlier but this  one has more support :)

I live in Johannesburg,South Africa , and have been hooked on the World Cup since it started .I've watched almost every game I can .The country is buzzing with patriotism across the racial lines .We have many visitors and the vibe on a daily basis is electrifying

Now to the actual World Cup...oh my hat !!!! All I can say is basically it has been so unpredictable most teams can still qualify. The so called favorites are not guaranteed in ...Germany ,Italy ,England and even Spain have to win there next games to qualify .Its really exciting .Only Netherlands and Argentina are through so far :)

Highlights for me so far ..there have been many but

...USA vs Slovenia (USA should have won ...that gaol being disallowed was clearly a bad call)

New Zealand VS  Italy (They drew !!!)

Spain VS  Switzerland ( Switzerland won ...amazing !!!)

Heres to the rest of the World Cup :)

    Italy got lucky. Again.

    Hop! Schweiz!

  • TealaTeala Member RarePosts: 7,627

Portugal 3 goals in 10 minutes - they are crushing North Korea.   I almost feel sorry for the North Korean players.   They seem like they are tired and lethargic...and not even there.

  • TealaTeala Member RarePosts: 7,627

Om nom nom nom nom  ^_^

Oh hey Portugal scored another goal!   Gooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal!  Woot woot!

    Wait - update!

    LOL!

3 more goals scored!   It is now 7-0 Portugal!  OMG!

  • SircaSirca Member UncommonPosts: 110

I must say Portugal did great, at last we do see goals and stylish ones (different player except for Tiago who scored two I believed).Ronaldo finally managed to score one (last one was a penalty back in...2009) and hopefully it will allow him to perform great during this world-cup, as expected.

Was very disappointed by Switz - Chilie although the south americans clearly deserved to win, the red card for the swiss at the 30ish min. was a bit unfair, imho. Now let's see how Spain plays vs Honduras, should be interesting since they lost their last game vs Switz. image

    Now its Spain vs Honduras

I want Spain to win ..so far looking good Spain 1-0

Agreed.  That is an absolute classic.

I wanted to address a post Jimmy_Scythe made on that other World Cup thread as to why soccer will never be a big hit in the United States.  He touched on some good points, but I think he missed an important one as well.  We Americans tend to be obsessed with statistics in our sports.  We don't just care about who won the game, we also want to know how good the individuals are by the numbers.  How else could baseball, which is even more boring than soccer, have become "America's pasttime"?  It's because it has more statistical categories than a company's balance sheet.  Singles, doubles, homers, strike outs, etc.  There are so many stats in baseball, that there are even statistical derivatives, such as slugging pct. which is a combination of multi-base hits.  Even the other popular sports in America have a multitude of statistical categories.

What does soccer have?  Goals and assists.  That's about it.  They've tried to expand the number of stats, with things like shots on goal and goalie saves, in an attempt to make it more attractive, but it hasn't really proved successful.

Keep in mind, I'm saying this as one who loves soccer.  I played it for seven years and am watching this year's World Cup closely.  But if you never played it, I could see where you might not get into it.

Sometimes I wonder if gambling has a hand in this. The classic sports that we in the States bet on, since the early 1900's, are all loaded with statistics and all of these statistics are used by book-makers in their calculations. It seems like the more statistics the more ways people can gamble on a sport. Which leads me to ask, is gambling on Soccer (Football) a popular thing around the globe?

Gambling is popular in UK and the rest of EU is (sloooowly) catching-up. France legalized on-line gambling right before the world-cup for instance but under some relatively strict rules. Still forbidden in Switz. for instance where I live. You do see many statistics in the national leagues but no comparaison with what you have in the US. I would be curious to know how it goes in asia.

Anyway  Gratz to Spain although they are not qualified yet, Switzerland still has a (slime) chance to steal their spot.

Today I will be keeping my eyes on France - South Africa and Argentina - Greece. Maradona's team is now my favorite in this world-cup.

France goes home in shame.    South Africa is out.    Mexico and Uraguay advance.   Awesome World Cup!
