Curt Schilling is the man, brought a championship to my city, so I will purchase his game even if it sucks... quid pro quo
Yup, same here, in the Boston area as well.
He'll get a purchase from me just as a thanks!
And if the game is good then I'll play it as well
Well, I can't make that committment even though I am keeping an eye on this title. I'm from Ranger country. Maybe if he had beaned a few more Yankees over his career (all belt high or lower, of course) I would feel obligated.
As for these:
An open ended world, with no outdoor loading screens. Seemless.
Skill based gameplay, rather than "you hit level 42, now pick your skills"
A unique sandbox-like crafting system like Ryzom, SWG, etc..
World PvP that is meaningful
I most certainly hope that two or all of these find there way in Copernicus.

Same here. I want the old feeling of playing a character in a "world" and knowing that if I send my 1st level wandering off into the Ogre Forest, he's going to get smashed maybe but not run into an invisible wall telling me I have not advanced far enough into the "story" to go there.
World feel is everything.
Will be real disappointed if I find myself in a singleplayer extended tutorial. Figuring stuff out and making mistakes, while sharing the environment with others is what it's all about.
We were at E3, met with MMORPG too. You'll be hearing from us at some point soon, as in this year soon.
Regarding Mercury or Copernicus?
Both. We were there to reach out to the real gaming community, the MMORPG sites of the world. Making sure they understand, that WE understand they are relevent and matter to us, since their communities are the exact people we want to be our guests and consumers for the next 20 years.

Those of us that follow FOH have seen you posting, pertaining to your company, for quite a while now. It is a shame Utnayan went postal on ya. As a former player on Mithaniel Marr server, I used to enjoy his posting on MMDN.
Even though I dont get over there as often as I did when playing EQ, it has been a bonus to see ya stop in there.
I would warn ya that this site has a bias towards sandbox gaming. By that I mean the posters, not the site itself. If you are not creating a sandbox, I hope the negativity wont keep you away from MMORPG.
Folks enjoy news about gaming. Some of them go too far though when they are not the target audience. The Jeff Freeman stuff before/after his death being the epitome of some stupid chit that can transpire here. Those folks are the minority on this site....they just happen to be the loudest.
I hope you keep it in mind when you visit.

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.
Zones give geographic character; a sense of geography. I really miss zones and will take them over a seamless world any day.
That's a non-issue. "Seamless" worlds have zones, they just are "seamless". Same thing as far as what you are talking about.
Before this turns into one of those pointless debates over semantics, how about we agree that a variety of environments within a world free of loading screens is what we're really talking about? Personally, I love being able to experience temperate, tropical, arctic, and desert areas in games. I hate having a loading screen pop up as I transition from one to the other.

I just really hope that Curt knows this is what a majority of us want:
An open ended world, with no outdoor loading screens. Seemless.
Skill based gameplay, rather than "you hit level 42, now pick your skills"
A unique sandbox-like crafting system like Ryzom, SWG, etc..
World PvP that is meaningful
Heck, if he includes ONE OR TWO of these things, he will succeed. That's how bad it is these days..
Whoa there, hold your horsies. Don't make his job even harder. Fact of the matter is while you and I do like skill based stuff many old-school gamers do in fact like very locked down class-based systems or don't care about sandbox stuff.
EQ was not much of a sandbox compared to EvE or UO or old-SWG. There are two camps (at least) of old-school and or hardcore gamers.
Don't setup a studio you actually like for failure. It is impossible for any studio to satisfy all these demands. Some of them are contradcitory. There are upsides and downsides to classes vs more open systems. Let them pick their direction don't tell them they need to go all directions at once or they will simply be torn apart.
Wow....a CEO posting on the forums.......that's insane!
Smed post over on Fohguild.com all the time...But never here. I wonder why?
Because FOH kissed his ass and while this place can be a cesspool you will get all sides of the equation too. Smed is marketing monkey scared of his own shadow because they lay no good foundation and therfore have no confidence, just msoke a mirrors.
I suspect the 38 want to be able to take the heat and stay in the kitchen.

Taking heat is not an issue, it's expected in this culture and especially in this environment. As long as the conversation doesn't get personal and people realize I cannot say 1/10th of what I'd like about the games right now it's all good:)

There are number of us who tell them to stop evangelizing while also recognizing they have some valid points. And writing cognizant counter arguments to their statements of supposed facts.
Look represent your point of veiw with real arguments. Don't paint nebulous groups of people with broad brushes. You simply make yourself the same as the people you are critizing.
I have already made a post to counter the "A majority of people want a sandbox" statement. I threw no stones even though I am not living in a glass house like some *cough*. Doing what you are doing here simply devolves into conspiracy theories about various "camps" of posters. Its pointless.

Not an issue for you I am willing to believe. When you prepare well it leads to this attitude. This is one of the most valuable lessons of any sport. Wrestling certainly taught me this, even if I was lazy and did not like to drill moves.
I do not think Smed shared that preparation. Rather I beleive SOE has often opted for prevarication and not preparation. Prepartion and a solid foundation can take the heat. Prevarication withers under it as you start to make statements that make no sense when put into context. Many guys in suits understand this and the moment their prevarication starts to buckle is the moment they stop communicating.
So while they have walked into the fire, I do not believe many of these guys withstand the heat in a longterm fashion. There is a real difference between Smed and the way the EvE folks have handled things. From the beginning they have said this is our design and this is the reason behind it and it stands up to even the most dedicated propaganda campaign. In the end people either say its "good but not my cup of tea". Or they go off on some silly screed and are not very persuasive. Even when legitimate stones were thrown at CCP over issues, for example the dev collusion on blueprints, they came out pretty bold and addressed the issue. I don't think I would say the same thing about SWG's NGE and a few other cases. There is a reason SOE are hated and avoid many outlets, they did not cover their bases in multiple cases. They withereed under the heat so badly that they get blamed for things that are not even their fault like Vanguard.
My hat's off to any company with a vision to advance the genre and enough danglers to invest heavily in what has become such a saturated market of half-hearted attempts to do something slighlty different. I hope this brings 38 great success and gives us a breath of fresh air. Please don't overlook the competitive crafters among us. Crafting has to be the most stale and neglected aspect of MMOs for the past few years. Interdepency between combat and non-combat characters makes a community.

Are you asking for two separate paths of crafter vs combat toons (perhaps with a sliding scale of in between) such as games like SWG or Neocron had? Or are you asking for meaningful crafting as an addition?
Interdependency may make a community, but don't alot of people jsut make crafter alts and combat alts? It seems to me there are much better way to create interdepency than having crafters fight like crap.
Serious death penalties makes every close call an adrenaline rush, and every minor achievement a major victory. This alternative rule-set should be in all MMORPGs.
Regarding the themepark versus sandbox debate, I'm hopeful that Copernicus will be the truly next-gen game this genre needs - the "really, really big game" that has a ton of character options, a deep interactive world, and both sandbox and themepark elements.
I'll be damned. Kudos to responding to this topic Curt.
Must say I'm impressed.
Hmmm...makes me wonder how much lurking you've done here and what your thoughts are of the topics and ideas that are floated around. Hehe
Suppose I should add I am really looking forward to this title. All in good time though.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

I don't see why he needs to "hold his horses". If the guy doesn't post what he likes (and he isn't the only one) how on earth is he ever going to be able to have a chance and a modern made game possessing some or all of those qualities?
Out of the 4 listed I don't see how any of those are contradictory. I can see how some would take more thought and work to implement well and as challeneges are meant to be overcome it can be conquered. It just comes down to will and planning.
It's your opinion that a studio hitting all 4 of those areas and hitting them well is a recipe for failure. Just know that there are a great many people who would disagree with you. As long as 38 does whatever it does well and polished it'll experience a measure of success. If it goes toward that old school style, hitting between EQ and the EVE/UO/old-SWG parameter you listed, so much the better as in my view we haven't had any gaves of late aim for that mark.

What is contradictory is the asumption that is "what the majority of us wants". Just because it sounds great or what you or I are looking for in a game does not mean that is what the majority feels.

Crafting will never be what the crafting fans dream about unless a game has item loss. And, uh,..good luck trying to convince anyone to do that.
