General: Interplay Answers Your Questions in Fallout Online FAQ

A Fallout Online FAQ has been put together by official Interplay forum goer BraveRobot, collecting a number of Interplay's answers to various questions about the game into one place. The information isn't all necessarily new if you've been following the development of the game closely, but if you haven't, there are probably quite a few revelations in there that might be of interest. Some of the answers are fairly informative, while others can be construed as downright teasing.

Will there be vehicles?



A decision regarding vehicles has been made.

Well, tell us what the decision was, dang it!

The FAQ also somewhat evasively discusses the game's business model, ultimately stating that between micro and P2P options the game will probably be "similar to the rest of the market." That market is currently in flux, with microtransaction based games on the rise even in the West, and perhaps even hybrid micro/P2P games.

Similarly, on the subject of whether Fallout Online would be "like WoW", Interplay answered that they aren't interested in cloning any game, but that they are making it a point to be "familiar with the current crop of titles" which includes the "industry standard" of WoW. Ultimately they don't want to make changes to things that work just for the sake of it, so if WoW got some things right, you may see those things in Fallout Online.

Death was also mentioned in the FAQ, and the response on death in Fallout Online is fairly intriguing:

How will player death, respawning, etc, be dealt with?



Death is death in the Fallout world and there are no Resurrection spells or magic wands that bring people back to life. The Master in FO1 was on one path to immortality, but even he wasn't immune to 9mm (or plasma rifles, whatever your weapon of choice was.)



We have a pretty good handle on how we handle player character defeat in PV13.

Will Fallout Online have permadeath? The language seems to suggest that players can be "defeated" but if they actually die (however this occurs in the game) they won't be coming back.

    What they could do, which would be a first to MMO's (at least to my knowledge), is to do away with the auto save feature. and you would have to "log-on" to something like a journal, or in game computer to save your current data.  That way if you die, you don't start all over, just at your last save. 

    It would give you that gut wrenching feeling as you try to remember when the last time you saved was.

     Sounds like the Eve Insurance system, or SWG Pre-NGE's cloning booths.

    Having read the entire FAQ, it wasn't surprising that not much detail was given.  However it was good to see the writer being open and honest, even with regards to WoW's influences on him, the project and the entire MMO industry.  I wish them all the best.

    I am interested now with this since FE seams to have died.   However this article raises more questions than it answers.  Hopefully more concreate stuff will come out.

    I got a great old idea.....In the old days of AD&D when you died, everything you collected dropped to the ground and it became public domain to anyone who came across it. In everyquest you had a set amount of time to get back to your body and reclaim your gear before everything went poof. So how about a little middle ground. When you die, you respawn back where you began, naked. Your possions drop where you died and after a given time it all become public domain.

    There's one fairly obvious solution to the problem of death in a Fallout MMO. All you have to do is look at Vault 112 and the first DLC for Fallout 3. :)

    Could be that all the players are in fact lying in suspension animation chambers in Vault X playing a post apocalyptic simulation designed by Dr Stanislaus Braun to test how Vault Dwellers adapt to life outside the vault based on extrapolations and studies carried out before the war.

    When you die, you don't really die, because the safeties are all "on".

    I could have answered those questions much better than the producer.

    It looks to me they didn't even started yet, my guess is a release date between 2005 and 2010

    Interplay has no money, end of.

    Give the IP back to Bethesda

    Uhm yeah, good interview... Sounds like that person was trying to avoid answering questions rather than answering them.

    Does anyone really believe that there is actually a game here and not just a rendered dog an pony show to try and hold onto the MMO rights?
