Henrik would rather use books than perform skills to raise levels

rlmccoy1987rlmccoy1987 Member Posts: 1,722

Thought this was interesting...  Thought this game was made so that when you perform a skill a certain amount of times, it would level up the skill from that point... It is getting to the point where you have to purchase books for everything you do... sad...  image

This applies to ONE SKILL not "everything you do"  As a scout, I have to admit to spamming "protect me" at wisents to raise creature control.  Even though I did it, I have to agree with Henrik that it is stupid, spams the server and is not really "playing the game".  Also, taming in some ways was a gold mine prior to this change. You can go into the wilderness with nothing but rags (i.e. no risk of losing anything) and set one animal on another until you areoverflowing with pelts. With this change there is at least some cost involved in going that route.

Creature control was a bitch to raise on it's own without setting up text macros to constantly feed pets and order commands, you know this. People were using the books anyway because of it.

I find the whole system rather funny.. Can't swim? Read a book! Can't walk? Read a book! Realism.. yeah..

Why can't it remain "increase on use" but with a limit on the increase, for example not more than X increases an hour or something?
They're going for the easy solution here once again. How lazy can they be?

The original idea behind MO was good but, as someone else put it, since then it has just been a big fiasco. Worst game dev team ever.

    Is reading a skill?

If I remember correctly, I do think there was a primary skill that affected how much you gain from books.

I could be very wrong though.

Ah, this took me back to UO... third party macro applications... yep, spammable skill learning - so, last century.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Reading is a skill in the game.

It seems like with the last patch they have begun to separate the books into vendors that are like trainers. There is a guy named 'hood' in Gaul kor that only sells the thievery books. Also a 'Veteran' who sells some combat regen books.

I can see them converting some books into skills learned at a trainer. ultimately we all have to remember why they went the route of skill books, database problems. As they fix things with the database to make it more skill friendly alot of these books may just disapear into the learn by doing category and in a trainer interface.

Books is the best idea ever. Better then repeating the same action over and over again and its more realistic. Also, reading books is a choice and you can only read one book at the time. Best idea ever seriously.

I thought this game was suppose to be super hardcore that it was almost like real life.  image

Would you rather whack things all day like Darkfall?

If you were to read a book about swordmanship techniques, would that make you a master swordsman?  The answer is no.

You would still have to practice in order to become good, and then you'd need some live experience to hone your skills even further.  Reading books all the way to max skill is completely unrealistic in my opinion.  This fix is just a workaround because they don't know how to implement the skill correctly.  That doesn't say much for the skill level of these programmers.

Reading a book one at a time is fine.

The more familiar I get with MO's core mechanics, the more I think that their systems are too complex for even a seasoned gamer.

I personally like the idea.  Really cuts out the AFK macroers and such....

The point is that it defeats the entire "skill" system.   In a skill system you gain said skill by performing that action.

Buying a book that makes your skill go up is the same thing as walking up to a trainer in average themepark MMO and clicking on BUY SKILL icon.  The only difference is that the increase isn't instant but rather over a few hours.  Otherwise.. replace "book vendor" with average themepark MMO "skill trainer" and it's a wash...

Now was Darkfalls system ideal?  Hell no.  It was ripe for exploitation and grindiness.

That said.. I don't believe that the book system is supposed to be the final skill system either.  I think it's a placeholder, but I could be mistaken there...

spamming commands was easily the most boring thing to do in the game, it was pointless and boring. making creature control level this way was a step in the right direction.

  • CharlizdCharlizd Member UncommonPosts: 923

Personally i think it is a good idea, just remember  not  all of us use macro's or scripts, heck tbh i am a total noob and wouldn't know how to do one, so some of us actually had to be there typing, feed....stay...feed....stay e.t.c and believe me there is no fun to be had in that.

Some skills i believe you should not have to read a book on like Jumping, Foot speed (waliking), Swimming (maybe an initial     book to get basic knowledge) or sprinting as these are everyday things most of us do.

For example i think the lowest age a char can be in game is 22 so what the fuck has he been doing the last 22 years??? sitting on his ass dragging himself along the ground lol, He should already know how to walk, i am sure he/she would have Sprinted sometime in there life.

The only skills you gain atm in game without reading a book and by learning just by doing is with melee/Ranged weapons, you pick up a weapon, equip it then use it you start getting skill in it.

Good move for this particular skill but get rid of some of the bloody obvious ones.

They did try that as he said in his post.. but people STILL spammed the server so thats why they had change it like this.

Also my char has soon maxed out the skills i want (im a combat char) and the only book i ever read so far is the Riding skill book...
