Despite how this will turn out, I'm having more fun watching the thread grow and the absurd comments people put up than I ever did actually playing WoW.
Blizzard keeps shooting themselves in the foot, sooner or later they're feel it. And when TOR gets released, I've got a feeling that they might have some serious opposition.
So keep up the good work Blizzard and I hope all your dreams and plans come to true.
What? MMOs are becoming malls rather than a subscription service, don't you have a name when you're in a mall? Sure, we'll have it floating above our heads or our forum posts, but hey, you can buy that extra concealing unicorn that will make you anonymous again!
Well the way I see it. Blizard is the 900 pound gorrilla in the room. What Blizard wants to do they will do, and the rest of everybody else best get ready as it is going to happen.
You eather go with the flow or leave. I got a fealing the the minority vocal of the ones complaining will leave. while the vast majority will stay in game. I know for a fact that most folks never use the forums. Most of them gladly trot around as if nothing was ever done. The rest are split into fanboys and haters, with a point to prove, and there is a reason they are in the forums as in board to death with the game, and or games they are playing. And use the forums as I do as a source of entertainment.
Less than 10% of a MMO's playerbase use the forums to any degree that actually means anything. Just look at this website:
Currently it covers 384 games and contain 2,297 guilds for those games.
1.2 million registered users and 2k non-registered users and ONLY 3.5 million post.
If you do the rough math that's about 3 post per user, which would include both members and non-members.
I have over 800 post by myself and there are well over 100 users with over 1000 post each.
Less than 300 concurrent users check these forums on a daily bases.
This all from a website that specializes in MMORPG information which also includes:
Databases
Contest
Blogs
Networking
So out of the roughly 4 million players from EU/NA that would amount to about 400,000 registered forum users and about 4k daily users, yup WoW is finally going to die!!
Also I guess that gamers for the most part have a very negative view of their fellow gamers. Thinking that 90% of them are potential stalkers, killers, rapists, pedophiles and revenge-filled inmature pricks that are just WAITING for the chance to find out where you live so they can follow through with their true desires.
It just goes to reinforce the belief of the mass media to think that video games are responsible for causing violence and violent behavior in those that play them. Way to go to stick it to the man!

Totally agree. Personally I quit WoW because i got bored of the raiding and such but trust me this naming thing won't kill the game. Sorry to say but this was just a troll post
Although I think it is a bad idea to contemplate showing a persons full name on a forum, I agree with others in that this won't affect the majority of WoW players simply because they steer well clear of the forums.
And showing peoples true names on posts will do NOTHING to stop the asshats from posting, it just gives them a different name. However, what it WILL do is make people a little more cautious about posting in general. Which defeats the whole object of the forum.
People will just say "well if you don't want your true identity known, don't post." and thats exactly what people will do.
There is no way Blizzard is going belly up. They've already made billions off the game, and will continue to be the most successful gaming company in the history of the known universe.
The number of people who will quit over this, they can live with. What will be messy is if we ever get a real life stalker case ending in violence as a result of the new scheme.
I know that my boss googles the job applicants we get prior to hiring them. - Somehow I just dont see it being that great for someone wanting to get hired in a rather conservative sector (banking) to have 20 pages of forum posts pop up on a google search.
Not that everyone would be affected by something like this, but I do feel it should be possible for a person to have an avid gaming hobby without it spilling over into how they are percieved in their professional life. The realID takes that control away from you, and you have to rely on the person doing the goodle search, to be open minded and not hold your nerdiness against you.
I donnu, Im kinda on the fence about it, because I think it might be me being a bit stuck in the old perception of MMo gaming being an anonomous affair, and perhaps it doesnt have to be... But I do think its a huge change, and I could see how it could negatively impact someone in other aspects of their life.
In any case, I dont post much on the official forums, and when I read this, I simply deleted the forum bookmark and created an account on mmo-champ - since noones forcing me to use the Blizz forums anyway.
So you can add all your facebook friends to your battle.net friends list (if they play a battle.net game), what's the big deal about that?

At that point they will probably get legally enforced to provide players the option to not reveal their real names, something which I find very impressive that they don't provide. Unless you can avoid all that by not using Blizzard's forums, which renders all this a matter of accepting the terms which include revealing real names or not using it.
What I find outraging about this though that there is basically nothing preventing you from using someone else name like a RL "friend", enemy, etc, impersonations will run rampant from people that want to post and avoid revealing their real names.
OMG the 0.5% of players thta post on the forums are going to quite the game, while the other 99% play and use other forums, Blizzard is dead along with wow.....NOT!!.
INGAME this works exactly the same way. You can be smart about who you give the ID thing... but right after their friends can look at the list of the person you just added and see your name.
That means you cannot protect the exposure of your own details once you shared it but once.
This change is just bullocks... Activision deserves to die and Blizzard should just re-start as their own company again. Nothing good has come of this marriage at all.
Even if 90% of their subs quit over this, they would still arguably be the most profitable mmo in the world.
Whether you like it or not, WoW isn't going to die anytime soon. I actually applaud their decision to add accountability to the forums.
It's not just about subscriptions, it's about reputation as well. At this point they're aiming a machine gun at their foot and I'm just waiting for them to pull the trigger.

Yep it wont die, but dont forget its a company and if company get such huge negative PR the shareholders wont be happy as it would mean the share prises will decrease and what do you think the first will start rolling (CEOs) ? For a such big company image is important (even in gaming industry where you can do a lot of shit).
Yeah that was what i were thinking as i first read about the real ID real names in forum.
In fact i could imagine that they want to become "Farmville for facebook"
Would explain why they "dumb down" WoW more and more over last years.
The security bug which permits any addon to get your real name even if you have "RealID" turned off in the Parental Control settings is a more serious matter, though.

worst case scenario they dont do it, no bloody big deal. So your saying the 0.5% of peopel that post on the forums will quit because they give their real names? then what about 99% of the people that dont post? will they quit as well?

In fact i can get every ones real name if i abuse that bug? :-)
I see incoming an Addon which only purpose is to find out Real names of players so you can bitch them personal.

Blizzard announces RealID, to facilitate B.Net's incorporation into facebook among other things (the flaming trolls all over thier forums)..
The flaming trolls get upset (obviously).. So the flame troll post, and get their accounts banned..
SO.. they come here to flame troll how WoW is now going to die...
