Major MMO companies use their own engines. WoW does it, Turbine does it, I'm sure Funcom and NCSoft do it.

Third party engines for MMOs only get used by small companies, usually for little F2P games that aren't going to be good.  It's not like FPS games where big name companies and big name games license one of the couple big name engines out there. This genre is different. The only reason that works for FPS games is they are all basically exactly the same, so once an engine works well for one, it works well for the others. But you still get companies like Crytech that make their own engine for their games, and ID which has always made their own engines, only now those companies also license their engines the way Unreal does.

WoW Engine is the least PC power drawing engine... we'll  know that much thats why the have the largest subs. shame too. DX 10-11  would cut out alot of people from wow verse. though i havent played since PRE-BC on Lothar. but im sure its the same engine from 5 yrs ago

Technically I think it's opposite. Crytech is mainly making the engine, and make the game to sell the engine :)

There's also the story that before WoW could have became a MMO the team that wanted it had to build one room with objects and make sure that the character models could interact with them. What worked got into the game, people falling down being bumped sitting in chairs. What didn't work, didn't make it into the game. There was going to be a more complicated spell casting system that sort of survives in a more refined manner, but since the warrior and rogue mechanics came off a bit more intuitive mages got reworked to be similar.

WoW-Edit is the game engine. As said elsewhere, it probably has code clean back to Rock n' Roll Racing and the Lost Vikings in it. LoL

The HeroEngine exists out there for MMOs. I'm not sure how much of it made it into SWTOR, but BioWare made a bit of news when they purchased it to use for their first MMO. It also made the game Hero's Journey vaporware, but it's made form a company that charges 30 bucks or so a month to people addicted to MUDs. .. STILL, to this day.

Why would a newer DX version cut out alot of people? Dx9 is fully capable of running side by side with dx10 and dx11. In fact, that is my biggest gripe with WoW's graphics. Not the art, but the flatness of it. GIve me advanced shaders, bumpmapping, HDR, etc., and I'd be a happy camper; while those still running TRS-80's could still enjoy the game right beside me with no ill effect on themselves or their *ahem* machine.
