Seriusly. I mean, to a point i get it, gaming industry is evolving and now MMOs can target other ages and genders too, but for gods shake i do not understand where all those childish cartoon games came from, and why are they even getting developed at this rate, and what confuses me more is their ratings.
Some of them are REALLY overrated and I do not understand why. Are they so poppular?

well it all started with "anime styled" MMOs, which i was down for. They were cool, but probably cause i was 13 or 14 when they started coming out. Now i'm 20, almost 21, and i can't stand them. I hate games with a bunch of kids that cant spell or just ask for free items. It brings down the economy man... lol
Same here, i m about 22. It's not just that I don't stand them, it surprises me how poppular and overrated they are. It seems just few years passed after MMOs birth and not only the gaming industry got f*cked up, but the gaming community turns out to be worse and worse as time passes by
It is because not everyone can upgrade there computer or have computer that can handle real looking graphics plus they don't age well they look out dated in about 2-3 years. Stylized graphics age alot better and you don't need a gaming computer to play them. This is why WoW sold so well. You don't even need a graphics card to play the game if you have a newer montherboard.
Just because a game has literally "cartoon-like graphics" doesn't make it for kids. DFO has blood splatter the ground and enemies blow away into chunks, plus cleavage, but Nexon is doing what they can to tone it down so that it *would be* angled at the kiddies.
There is just waaaay too much emphasis on making something "family friendly" these days. Anyone over the age of 12 doesn't want that, and anyone under 12 isn't internet savvy enough to find these games on their own. The whole idea relies of concerned parents tossing their kids a bone in order to keep them occupied, and lets be honest, that's a tiny market that's nt worth mentioning. Plus, they all already play Club Penguin, why saturate it more?

It's been more than a few years try 13 years or more if you want to count MUDs
Oh, you mean World of Warcraft?
You 're right about that, but WoW may had those kind of graphics but it was a REAL game, had a great storyline, had much content, and although i do not like it, it's a great game for it's kind. I was reffering to games like
Yohoho! Puzzle pirates, and Wizard 101 , or hello kitty or wonderking. And there are tons others like those. Do you believe they deserve their ratings? I think some of them shouldn't even be on the list. One question that comes in mind though, is who votes so much for these games? are there really so many people playing those? do they have such a big community ? It's just confusing for me
What games are you talking about? I've always noticed a bunch of cute MMOs that are F2P, but haven't noticed any real cartoon type MMOs for P2P. I guess if you consider WoW, WAR, Aion, and L2 as cartoons, then theres a few.
I'm 29 and wouldn't have a problem playing a cartoony MMO as long as it's good. Just that I haven't found anything worth playing. I consider stuff like Flyff as cartoon-like . Maybe my idea of cartoon-like is different from everyone else.
kids play WoW?
Philosophy of MMO Game Design
Although WoW has become infested with a younger audience (due people being to buy time cards at any freaking store...), i wouldnt consider that one of those "childish, cartoony games" .. everything is just really big in this game~ ;P
(btw, not a fan boy, actually don't even play anymore)
We play video games... We're all kids here, no matter the age.
Well see, i have no problem with "anime-styled" MMOs.. its just their so directed towards kids. Mabonogi had a great idea (spelling), you can age, pretty much skill up in anything you want (even making music), its a great concept! but it was totally directed to little kids with their "cute, spikey haircut, anime style graphics" so the population is ran pretty much by 12 yr olds, and thats unattractive to me as an adult
It's called capitalism. If the demand is there, someone will supply it.
The cynics would argue that game developers are trying to wean youngsters onto addictive MMO style of games.
All I know is that, if I was six, I'd probably be stoked that I could get online with my mates and play something based on Marvel or SW. As a prospective parent I wouldn't want my very young child logging onto WOW or something similar with the rubbish you've got to take off some players there.
As a mature player, there are other products available to me, so it doesn't bother me that they're catering to another audience.
If they are getting high scores (I'm not sure what scores you're referencing), the p/reviewer is hopefully taking into account the audience the game is aimed at.
I'm not a fan of cutesy, childish or anime-inspired art, but that doesn't mean others aren't.
So true haha. I've never been one to judge a game because it looked like a cartoon. A good game is a good game, regardless of looks.
Maximo was for Kids?
Philosophy of MMO Game Design
Yeah, I can see how that would be a problem. I've tried a bunch of these cute games, but could never get into them because of gameplay mechanics. I've never gotten far enough to experience the communities.
Those games are aimed at kids in the first place and you should rated as such. If you played a game you think is the greatest game for kids you should give it a high score. More than graphics and gameplay go into rating a game. You also have you have to think about who are they trying to get to buy and play the game and how the gameplay fits into that.
I'm going to have to agree with most of that. I just don't like those kinds of games ;P
LOL, thats what they used to say about WOW and look how good it turned out!
Then they make Aion with GOOD graphics and it's having trouble getting subscribers. This cracks me up.
Proud MMORPG.com member since March 2004! Make PvE GREAT Again!
You're right, I agree with all that, it's not that i hate them or tottaly dislike them, it just confuses me. As I said in my OP, i'm surprised with the number of the games emerging to be cartoon style aiming at children and parents wallets(Although a fact is that many adults play those games). Although about the rating, they are all MMORPGs after all, they should get rated objectively. I wouldnt rate a game just considering if it's good for the audience they want to aproach, but as a total.
Unless it's based on fully operational and quantifiable terms and definitions objective rating is an oxymoron. Even then any researcher who tells you that s/something is 100% objective isn't a good researcher at all.
Don't think so.
It's really just a matter of style and not a matter of hardware.
LotRo has realistic graphics and does run really well on low-end systems.
And funny thing is they mainly populated by male adults you wonder why?
I agree and thats why i avoid them like a plague:P
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
Sorry to bug off Wow haters in this forum again but its not ONLY wow hes talking about, CoH is very cartoony as well as Atlantica online i may list other ones but i dont understand why people always hit on Wow? Jalousy probably or frustration.
You're right on that.. I think everyone knows why :P
