i got the CE for Age of Conan it was great for awhile, but as the game went on they sarted giveing the same things to other players so it made it to me," not worth the money i payed." but i did break down and pre-ordered FFX14 CE because ive always been a fan of the FF games
I have Age of Conan Collectors Edition and its worth it.Art book,map,4 disks(one DVD with all music in game that i use to play it in my car) and cool box.In game items are not import?nt to me ,i do not want to have bonuses in the game, better real stuff that are related to the game lore and world.
It's all in the eye of the beholder when it comes to collector's additions. Really on the publisher's side they make a killing with this just by adding a smidge of value to the content or some other trinket. However if it's worth it to the purchaser to pay the extra money than more power to them.
The value of something can differ greatly from person to person. The old saying "one mans junk is another man's treasure", most certainly applies to such a question. Do I think people are ripped off by the insane pricing that can accompany CE's? Again I really can't say, that really is up to those who have paid the price in the end.
Some people buy it simply for the BOX itself and place personal value on that token of their purchase. Others buy them for the keys that usually are added as a bonus to the purchase, to hand out to friends. Others get them for the collectables that come along with the purchase, so on and so forth.
In my case I own one, just one CE. That's for Guild Wars which did come with a very well put together book of artwork. The only reason I purchased it was because it was in the bargain bin for like 12.99. My view of CE's is, I usually don't need them, as well as I never purchase games at launch, meaning most CE's are bought up by the time I get around to making a purchase.

The only collector's edition I bought was SWG, and the reason wasn't because I wanted one. I went to 3 stores on the day it released and the first 2 said they were all sold out. The third one said it was sold out but had been holding onto a collector's edition that noone came for, so I bought that since it was my only option. It had an interesting art book in it, but definetly not worth the increased price.
Exact same story here. Wasn't worth the $99.00 or whatever it costed me, but I wanted the game too bad.
I would agree that i am getting more selective with my CE purchases. It seems to me that it is becoming more popular to release games with some sort of bonus items or game content that really isant worth the extra $30-60 just to get a few extra sales from people who are dazzled by the fancy package. There are a handfull of games due to be released between now and Christmas all of them will be alvailable as a CE but i can easily say that only 1 or 2 will get some consideration as to if they are worth purchasing or not. If the attraction is a comic or collectors cards it'l be propably not!
I personally enjoy a CE of anything if it meets a few requirements:
It actually has some collection value. In other words, the CE is more limited and not just a mass-market means of getting people to spend more money on the item.
The CE provides some extras that are worth the expenditure. One of my favorite CEs so far was the original EQ2 box. The tin, DVD case, books, collector's coin, and in-game items (especially the baby dragon pet) added up to a great value to me. None of it was cheap junk (like resin, plastic or 'painted' aluminum).
The CE is for something I'm going to buy and enjoy anyway: Starcraft II, Diablo 3 (when it comes out), etc.
The one thing I wish was the the CE's were much more limited. I expect that has more to do with publisher's anticipated sales of copies rather, though. An unregistered WoW CE is worth thousands. A 'used' copy (no definition of used, but assuming the key was registered) is going for $200 on Amazon. I can't think of any other CEs that have really shown any 'collector value' over the years. I'm not even sure any of the WoW CEs will maintain their value once the game loses popularity.
At this point buying a game at $50 is already a gamble with bad odds. If the art or music is really that good then they will release it later separately.
I buy alot of games, like every month or every other month. Mostly I choose MMORPG games because of the replayability they have, but I never go for the Collectors Edition, can't see the point of it. (Although I wanted the Rockstar CE which had the real KnuckleDuster, did they ever really sell those ? lol)
It largely depends on the amount and quality of the extras.
The main problem i've had buying CE's in the past is shelling out that extra money for a fancy boxed set with ingame goodies for an overhyped and amazing looking mmo, which ultimately ends up being a dissapointment. The extra investment makes it sting that much more.
I liked AOC's CE w/ the map and soundtrack an all that crap but was it worth the 90 bucks...hell no...the game was crap and barely playable at launch...some of the other CE's were a little better games but defintley not worth the money INHO...nowadays all you have to do is wait a month or 2 and they drop the game price down by half (cryptic looking at u here)...and still get the bonus stuff fm the box...
