This week’s community spotlight focuses on the thread “If you can revive any game.. what would it be and why?” by Beartoe. As the thread title implies, Beartoe wants to know which MMO other readers feel are worthy of coming back from the dead, and why. Beartoe’s pick? Asheron’s Call 2:
“if you can revive any game .. what would it be and why?
for myself it would be Asheron's Call 2. my first mmo. before wow or FF11, almost same time when SWG just came out, and EVE was still in its infancy.
I remember creating a big hulking Lugian Male.. and using the portal like "stargate effect" to the starting area. the world was beutifull.. grass sways as the wind blows, your armor and your flesh shows damage as you get into tough fights, but slowly repairs itself as you rest. sounds of the world and the music is like no other. Lotros music instrument, the way you can hit keyboard keys for the notes was first introduced on this game.
the basic layout of wow ui interface. is straight carbon copy of ac2. it was one of the first mmo that uses addons, ui layout and what not. .. again this was pre-wow.
anyway.. I would like to read more about you guys. post away.”

Ok i'l just get the stock standard answers out of the way
EQ1, the first game for many and (apparently) an awesome on at that. (from what i hear) The raiding was top notch, the questing was great and the zones where epic. Overall the game was awesome...hell it practically spawned the modern MMO industry.
UO, The original sandbox. People have been crying out for a good sandbox and why not remake the one that started it all. An awesome array of skills to choose from and a world that let you be a part of it. It's only real downfall was time and some questionable dev decisions.
SWG (Pre NGE), What can i say, this one has been discussed to death (it even has it's own separate forum on this site. The Pre NGE SWG was a highly unique sandbox game and while it did have it's bugs and it's issues, overall it managed to captivate it's audience and provide and experience they have never felt before (and apparently never will again).
That should just about cover 90% of the responses in this thread. Oh and i'd like to point out i have never played EQ1, only tried the UO trial (in 2009) and loved SWG to bits (Pre NGE).
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
I have to repeat what otehrs have said. Old EQ1 pre luc exspansion. You really felt like you were on an epic journey. Traveling from Qyenos to FreePort felt like an epic adventure in and of itself. The first site of the wood elfts high in thier trees in Great Faydark filled you with wonder. The excitement of filling all your slots with even cloth armor and getting a rusty two handed sword polished. The thrill of making your own bow and arrows. Nothing has ever replaced.
Magic is impressive, but now Minsc leads! Swords for everyone!
I would bring back Earth and Beyond. I would love to do another TADA-O Gate camp.
me too Earth and Beyond was great i loved the skil set and races. i tried to get a server and run the game myself but failed. EA doesnt even remember that game
I, too, will jump on the E&B wagon. I have not experienced the same sort of gameplay since then, especially during offline sessions of trying to figure out what was going on with the V'rix with other members of the community.
The community. That was something else I haven't experienced since. It seemed like we were playing the same game for the same reasons...fun.
Currently Playing: Nothing...I'm developing.
Looking Forward To:
It would have to be SWG pre CU. I sure miss that game at times in my search to find anything even close to that game.
What I miss most is the social game play that was built in to SWG.
It was not a MMO that many people will remember or classify as such but I would bring back the old MultiPlayerBattleTech:Solaris and MPBT:3025.
Would also bring back Earth & Beyond.
I'd go with what others have said, but picking one, it would be SWG back when it was fun (I don't remember exactly when that was, but I DO remember really loving that game...). As others have said, it was the most naturally social game I've ever played, and I truly miss that, even though I still love playing MMOGs solo.
DAoC without any shadow of a doubt before they wrecked it with too muchridiculous PvE requirements and allowing rampant botting.
The housing wasn't all good either = deserted cities.
Yes I know it is still going, but it is not even close to the fantastic game it once was...
Oh and the community was on the whole was fantastic, and real in game politics with consequences for acting like a total tard.
SWG. I played a little bit of this recently, and by the Force was I unimpressed. The graphics were glitchy, the landscapes were incredibly plain. I've heard ALOT of awful things about how Sony ruined it, but yeah. I'd revive that one, make it more vibrant, and modern.
I have two forces by my side;
One's the truth and one's a lie;
Which one's which I cannot tell;
This Enigma is my Hell..
Easy, DAoC or SWG
E&B for me: Big, Strong, Wow Tada-O
Tabula Rasa, the game had a lot of potential and was not that bad of a game. It was a great game in my opinion but had a lot of bugs. The game had the plug pulled way too early and never had a chance to even develop.
If I could revive any MMO that one would be Star Wars Galaxies (pre CU) for sure. That was the best MMORPG ever made. The crafting was awesome, nice battles, outstanding base story but, unfortunally, 100% jerks owning the game rights
Since the deaths of my oldest favorites (Pre-CU/NGE SWG, UO near release, E&B, Asheron's Call 2) have been so long that I've had a chance to really get over them more, I'll have to go with Tabula Rasa. It was one of the only games that got my WoW-loving roomie to get the fuck out of Azeroth and do something interesting with his time. We had a great time grinding Fort Dew, everything about our characters was fun and interesting, and the game itself improved -rapidly- once the devs were allowed to patch all kinds of crazy stuff in.
TR would be great if someone would bring it out and work with it just a little, and it's new-looking enough that people wouldn't be instantly turned off by the graphics like they may with E&B, SWG or oldschool UO.
I agree about AC2 Turbine had a great game there but let MS rush it out to soon at first then after Turbine got the rights back from MS it was too late damage was done. I would so love to run around on my Tummy again or my Luggy hurling boulders defending the shadow fort against the Doms or the other faction (been awhile forgot the name)
There have been some great posts so far on what game ya would bring back. SWG's Pre-CU and NGE is a great choice. I still have a little dead spot on my heart from when SONY ruined the game. EQ1 Pre Luclin is another good one. The days of old Norrath, Kunark and Velious will always be some of my favorite. Ultima Online back in the mid to late '90s before the changes another strong contender. Ah, the days of making a PK cry when you kill him and give his gear to the newb he was picking on.
Still I would have to bring back Earth and Beyond prior to the second to last patch (I think that was it) that changed the game. That poor game never got a fair chance at the glory it could have had. If it would have launched 1 patch before it would would have been a great game. I still do not understand why the Devs who listened to us testers just suddenly stopped. We told them the changes were a bad idea but they launched them anyways.
First i would have to say Earth & Beyond, damn that was a good game. Thank god the emulator is almost 100% up and running...
Second i would say Tabula Rasa because it had a kick ass combat system. A few tweaks here and there and that game would beat the crap out of almost any game out there... Oh well
Oh, and EnB still kicks ass, even with the old graphics. If you don't believe me go play it yourselfs.
For Me it would be Tabula Rasa. Agreed it had its flaws (then again what game doesn't in the beginning) but between the backstory and combat (had to love base defenses against the mobs!!!) there was real potential
SWG pre CU. I spent way to much time playing that game. The whole search for a way to become a jedi was fun and I like the old TEF system. Remember city ban? 8) There was freedom, pvp, strong community, and awesome crafting/economy, what more could you want?
Also UO. I never got to play it but read about Trammel, it would have been interesting to have been a part of that one.
* I read most of what Jon Wood writes
* He needs more bullet points though
I would revive DAoC as well, pre-crybaby sissy bedwetter I cant climb ladders era! Back to hard core RVR when you didn't have a bot and when you actually had to PLAY your toon for a few months to get to level 50. Not this level to 50 in one day stuff and oh by the way you gotta do this stuff in PVE if you wanna be competetive and get the best armor/weapons we keep changing crud!
SWG pre CU/NGE hands down one of the funnest games I ever played. It had everything that all types of gamers wanted. If Sony ever wanted to start a server with SWG and JTL I would definitely go back.
Collector of old minis.
Playing WAR:Age of Rekoning
www.oldtimersguild.com
Pre CU or Pre NGE SWG, whichever is more likely
and of course Earth and Beyond!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i still have the game disc for it
