Star Wars: The Old Republic: Space Combat Confirmed

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

At this weekend's Comic Con in San Diego, Star Wars: The Old Republic developers were on hand for a special panel. During their talk, devs confirmed that space combat will be an integral part of The Old Republic. Devs have a plan to reveal more about space combat in the upcoming weeks including a spread in the October 2010 issue of PC Gamer which goes on sale in mid-August.

If you’ve been following the news coming out of the Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ panel at Comic-Con International, you’ve heard the announcement that we will indeed have Space Combat as part of the TOR experience! But what does that mean? Space combat is an alternative gameplay experience to the primary game of storytelling, questing, and ground-based combat. In space combat, you fly your personal ship to various “hot spots” on your galaxy map. From there, you will blast your way through asteroid fields, enemy fighters, frigates, destroyers, and a variety of other obstacles that will evoke memories of some of the great Star Wars™ space battles. To learn more, pick up the October 2010 edition of PC Gamer which hits newsstands starting August 17th for screenshots and an exclusive interview or check back with us in the weeks to come.

This is clearly a total lie.

After all after countless threads on SW:TOR in these forums we already know exactly what is in the game, theminutiae of it's game mechanics and have already judged it's failure /success without the need for actual facts or hands on experience.

    Hah! I suspected as much.

I expect that a lot of people who were bashing SWTOR because of "no space combat" will have to change their tune.

Great news, and renewed my interest in the game at least a little bit, will just have to see how it looks, what the combat will be like and if its actually done well or is just kind of thrown in there half assed. Im kind of worried with all their past talk of most likely not having space combat, now suddenly it's in... youve kind of got to wonder were they just basically playing the PR game to surprise us with this and get more attention to the game closer to launch, or was it that they saw all the dissappointment in there being no space combat as of yet so they said "Well we better throw something in there, even if its not great, just so more people will buy it since we have space combat now". Im hoping the latter isnt the case and it is well executed and fun.

I wish they would stop adding great stuff to this game.  I was happy with it as it was and now I have to get happier

Bah!   do something silly to make up for it?    Jaja incoming.....

Seriously this game is gonna be solid gold wookie poo -  Pre ordered and cant wait

I used to visit this site a lot however in recent years it has become the home of negative forum posts, illogical opinions and tantrums so I visit less often.

While its a good step it doesn't sound very good.  If they did space combat I would hope for something more akin to the whole Xwing vs Tie fighter sort of thing.  JTL was close but just not all that great.  To me the release information for space combat in TOR sounds a bit more like mini games:

"In space combat, you fly your personal ship to various “hot spots” on your galaxy map. From there, you will blast your way through asteroid fields, enemy fighters, frigates, destroyers, and a variety of other obstacles that will evoke memories of some of the great Star Wars™ space battles."

Now, if the combat is fully fleshed out and there is a way to upgrade one's personal ship etc, then its a great thing.  Otherwise it sounds more like a pickle on a burger (nice but far from important).

Definitely doesn't diminish my expectations for the game because, like in SWG, I suspect space flight (for me) will be something that will break up the monotony of questing :P

Happy to hear that there will be space combat in the game. But some questions still remain. Will it be full out space flight, twitch based combat? Or will it end up being turret firing mini games like the KOTOR games. The former...HELL YEAH! The latter...meh. I am guessing by the mention of hotspots that all the space combat will be instanced. Will there be any non-instanced space stuff at any point. What about PvP space combat?

To condense it all into one question, is the space combat going to be more SWG or more KOTOR?

Hope no one takes this wrong way and thinks I am trying to be a hater or be very negative about the news. I will be playing the hell outta SW:TOR when it hits, I don't think it will suck enough (at all) to make me not want to play it. I just can't help but look at the wording of the news bit and think that it could read either way. Still nice to know that there WILL be some kind of space combat content in the game.

yawn.. star wars galaxies had it also and 'space combat' just sucked. 'space combat' is just more as simple dialogs with a million of possible answers.

I think you are confused. They never actually said they are not having space combat , they said they don't want to talk about it at the time. See this company appears to be a company that is either stupid or genius at marketting.  They like to release little tid bits of info here and there and wait for when they are on tv and have the national spotlight to release Big things like this.. I am sure it was all apart of their strategy, now some folks that may have lost interest are interested again. We will see this happen as time goes on.

Funny how passive some people are being about this news, when considering not long ago everyone's complaint was that there wasn't space combat lol.

*shrug* Even if it is more a minigame, so what. It's cool that it's there, but I am not space nut either way.

I don't mean to dog it, cuz I've not played it...but the description they have here of space combat seems kind of like a tack-on feature.

Just go shoot crap in the corner when you're bored of the story.

Again, if its like massive fleet battles were you just jump in and start shooting crap...that could be fun.

this doesn't mean that its going to be GOOD space combat.

It doesn't mean its going to be X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter.

Try not to get your hopes up yet, it might just be a "Free Realms-style" mini-game. Or... like the mini games that were already IN the original KOTOR game.

Thing is it's not so much that they wanted JUST space combat, but that they wanted GOOD space combat. After all, STO had space combat and well... yeah i wont even bother going there we all know the story.

Will really have to wait and see exactly how it looks/plays and how it ties into the rest of the game. As a few others have mentioned, this description makes it seem more like a tacked on mini-game type thing to play when youre bored rather than an important part of the core of the game with any real impact. If they do incorporate it well into the rest of the game and everything else works good, it will be awesome.... but if its the minigame style a lot of people are gonna be dissappointed.

i eagerly await some footage and details of this space combat.

This announcement by all means and accounts have open the box of sheer excitement as well as absolute terror for obvious reasons.

    1. with the confirmation of space combat, will this also play introduction to manual space flight.. No stupid duh answers, this is as serious as a heart attack, for all we known, space combat could be a mini game of turret gunning ala kotor as worse case scenario..

    2. follow up with 1,  will this also introduce either space travel from one planet to the next? or closed in hot spots only focused on Combat only,  (ya..space combat)  and nothing else, nothing else being travelling space delivering supplies, or smuggling them for that matter. ( smuggling ship running from bounty hunter ship cops n robbers style anyone?)

    3. what ships will be there at our disposal?,  several different kinds of ships.. fighters, frigates?...destroyers?  or do we make do with just with our player house ship and run with it?

These questions were going to be asked eventually, might as well get it out of the way now before the hype train runs everybody over.

Makes no difference. They will whine and bitch ABOUT the space combat, or how shitty it is, or some other reason to hate it.  These forums are filled with bile to put it nicely. Doesn't matter how well they actually do, people here just focus on the negative aspect of things.

For those of you who WERE NOT there:

It is not a minigame or some half-ass implementation. Full integrated story and missions based in space that are completely optional. The sooner people quit bitching about sandbox blah blah and how much they are SURE will and will not be in, the sooner they will see the level of immersion and depth they are putting in the game,

Read the article closely. When the transcript is released read that too.  Then maybe some of you can quit talking out of your ass for a change.

Sorry, I just get sick of the doom and gloom that floats in this toilet. I have hopes this news will shut some people up, but most likely they'll flame me and move on to something else to bitch about. But thats typical for mmorpg.

Space combat in TOR will be like Eve Online.

Well they have been saying all along that each character will have their own ship, but they only discussed how it is used for managing companions, so that could mean it's been a planned feature and will have some depth to it.

But then again that could also mean they are tacking combat on as a last minute thing. I have my doubts about that though, the ships have been there for the longest time, kind of hard to imagine they didn't have further plans for them other than npc storage.

if it incorporates the travelling aspect then i wouldnt mind, that also includes the spread sheet that goes with it.
