Really? Hehe I can't believe you all enjoy fishing, but whatever if you enjoy it more power to you. I had a friend in XI that maxed out his fishing and everytime I log in and he was on he be fishing, he had already maxed a few jobs so there was no need for him to actually level.

On the plus side you will be able to level your physical level in XIV so if you enjoy fishing then you can actually level from the profession.

Fishing rocks, and will be one of my primary DotL...  There comes a time while adventuring and you find these awesome vistas and you just gotta kick back with a rod and see what ya can catch.

In Wow when you fished, you could get a number of strange things in addition to fish on your line (I think in Vanguard aswell), which for me, added to the attraction of fishing.  Have to say that in Lotro, I find it a bit boring.

Will it be just fish in FF XIV or do you think the odd valuable item might be thrown in?

I've always heard that fishing is most complex and unique in FFXI. My galka warrior is only level 11 and I was told by my linkshell not to fish until level 20 because it's a PITA. Could you please, in a couple of sentences, describe us what's so unique about FFXI fishing? There's so much info on the web it's hard to find the pearls, would much rather hear a vet comparing the FFXI fishing system to games like WOW and LOTRO :)

Well I get LOTRO out of the way first cause its the single most pathetic fishing system ever created.  There are what 2-3 fishing rods, and no specific bait or pool of water to fish in that makes a damn bit of difference, you only need to catch so many fish per day to get a skill point then ur done...whoopty do da    rofl

Next would be WoW, again not a great system, but a little more in depth than LOTRO, but not by much.  It was a far better system when you had to fish in all the various zones and bodies of water of the game and they each required a certain level of skill.  Now you can fish anywhere no matter your skill and the only thing that determines skilling up is how many things you reel in, and it doesn't even have to be a fish, it can be any of the plethoras of grey/white vendor junk too.  Also just like LOTRO, all you do it click the bobber when it gets pulled by a fish, and you win...joy...squee...

Now comes FFXI, and FFXIV which are going to be similar systems from what I can tell by their descriptions.  Starting off its not a system where you just click a bobber, as there isn't one.  And you can't fish in just any water and expect results.  In FFXI there were some 20-30+ different fishing rods, maybe more and while some of the lower valued ones were no better than another there were specific rods for the types of water you were fishing in like a pond/lake, fast flowing waters like a river or stream, ocean fishing, etc.   Any rod can be used anywhere, but if you used the proper one you'd fair better.

There were also some 70-100+ different types of bait and rigs and you pair them with different rods in various areas of the world to catch specific fish.  You also need a certain lvl of skill to catch various fish as well, you couldn't just go out at skill 0 or 1 and catch the big boys...as those required months and months of fishing to earn the legendary Lu Shangs Fishing Rod {should add that it took players more than a 1 RL year to earn this rod, had to turn in 10,000 Moat Carp} or the even more difficult Ebisu Rod, which is the best in the game.  On top of all this your rods can break and often, unlike the above two MMOs where they don't.  They can be repaired with crafting or just drop in on the AH for someone else to buy and repair for skilling up on.

Now comes the fishing, there were some 6-7 different messages that would pop up once you caught something that would give you an idea of the strength of said catch.  You could cut your line and cancel the catch if you didn't wanna risk breaking your rod if you got a bad message, or try anyway.  Sometimes it could be a fish, other times an item that was too heavy to reel in.  And unlike WoW & LOTRO every item you reeled in from fishing had a use, from quests to crafting...etc   When fishing in areas ouside a city zone, you could also reel up monsters, some could be easy, others would destroy you...of which I had happen to me many times...hehe

Anyway, back to the actual fishing, if you got a message that determined you could successfully reel it in, you then entered a mini-game, which was added a few years in to stop fishing bots and it worked.  You'd have a meter for the energy of said fish or item appear, and your rod would get yanked left and right, and you had to hold or tap the opposite direction to weaken the fish, and once you got the bar gone or low enough you could attempt to reel it in.  You wouldn't always succeed and could still end up losing your bait, the catch or having your rod broken.

    Here watch this video of how fishing works...{not the greatest video, but it shows how it looks}

Lastly there was also specific weather, times and moon cycles that would make fishing better or worse, that one could follow.  Its a really really nice system and FFXIV already sounds like it'll be similar in depth:

    Fisherman

These netpullers put their all into everything having to do with fishing. With their fishing rods, they are masters of surf-, river- and boat-fishing, taking into account the season, time, and weather when choosing their tools, fishing points and bait. Since their occupation takes them to many interesting but dangerous places, it is not out of the ordinary to hire a discipline of war as an escort.

Thank you for posting this, just what I wanted to know. Can't wait for FFXIV to come out, so I can go fishing.

During developement all games are sandboxes. At release they all become theme parks.

Thanks a ton, Khrymson, I was very interested in ff fishing and now it looks even greater than I thought it could ever be :) Can't wait to get to level 20 in FFXI to give it a try.

Thanks for the video as well, I couldn't find any good ones on youtube myself, sadly. I'm guessing watching it is nowhere near fishing yourself. Well, will find out soon how great it actually is :)

Lets just hope FFXIV is just as great, if not better!

Fishing is really fun for me irl, so just thinking about fishing in game would be so awesome, especially if it's system is that complicated.

I hope the actual catching process is something similar to Zelda games, like twilight princess for example. =]

Hey Omrie I thought the same thing when he was describing it, dang if it was like what they did in Zelda I would actually like it cause that was fun. And I remember finshing in FFXI wish WoW was a bit more interactive like that would of made the whole getting from 400-401 by catching 50 fish a bit better lol.

Thank you Khrymson very helpful information. image

Quite excited to play with fishing in FF14. Enjoyed fishing in games since titles like Breath of Fire II. It's a shame fishing in LOTRO was too simple.

Wow..... go fishing irl?  This thread is just sad.

You know what else would be amazing?  If FFXIV let me get a job in game and work 8 hours a day at a virtual office where I had to deal with virtual office politics!!!!

OMG and the epic loot would be a red stapler! * cream *

"I can't wait for ffxiv so i can go fishing!"  reaaaaaaally?
