So I've been playing Eve Online for about 4 months now and I have to say, I'm loving every minute of it. I mine while I study for classes to fund my PVP when I'm actually playing the game. My corp is a lot of fun to hang out with and we do alot of hilarious and fun roams / hunting ops. It's great. I just wanted to strongly reccomend this game to anyone looking for an addictive sand box game. You definately get out of Eve what you put in to it!

Welcome to EVE. Glad you're having fun.
I really wish I could have gotten into EvE. All of my RL friends are playing it right now but I just did not like the controls... I guess more or less SWG Jump to Lightspeed did me in on that one. I was also a little miffed on the whole training thing taking real time and how big the gap can be between vets and starting out.
Glad you enjoy it... if you ever run across any Futon Industries or whatever my friends corp is called kill them for me there is only 5 of them lol
The whole controls thing got to me at first too. Eventually it does grow on you and you learn to appreciate why it's designed that way. The learning curve is steep and often times players find themselves enjoying the game, but quitting because they lack any real direction in it.
As for the gaps between veterans and new players.... it does exist at first, but you're going to find that in any game. However, once you're able to fly and fit your first ship or two, that gap lessens significantly. You can fly it as well as any veteran, the onlydifference between yourself and a veteran is that he can fly different ships. Ultimately, it comes down to tactics that define true skill in the game. I've seen rifter and battlecruiser pilots rack up killboards. If you have the patience you will eventually begin to become a more well rounded character.
My advice to any new player is to specialize. Don't do too much too soon. If you're gonna mine, then mine. If you're gonna fly a certain race, then stick to that race. Take the time to learn how to use Evemon and plan your skills properly. If you're on a trial account, maybe open a second trial account and build a secondary character with a different skillset. Stick with the one that appeals most to you in the end. You'll get much further in the game if you go this route.
My new PC gets here wednesday so im thinking im going to get another trial account here before too long. SW:TOR is still a ways away and I dont think BF:BC2 is going to hold my attention forever or at least till TOR comes out.... I am going to have a friend come over and show me wtf im supposed to be doing at first when i do tho XD
I had a trial but did not get too far into it...
really sounds like fun and i would give it another shot,
anyone can hook me up with a buddy invite or w/e?
sure, just PM me your email and I'll send you a buddy key and some ISK to help get you started.
Great!
I've never really been one to 'mine while doing other stuff' personally, it does help the cash flow though. and the new PI should bolster that passive income more.
Would be interested in knowing a bit more about how you progressed through Eve, what goals you set yourself, what was your skill point strategy. How did you select your corp, did you play with other friends, or did you start a trial and make new friends?
I ask because, nearly every person who looks at a game will take the trial. But the trial in eve, (as you can see from comments above) doesnt really help. Its hit n miss, the fact that any people continue to play and enjoy eve after the trial is rare! So anything you can say you did might help other people who 'want to like eve, but dont understand how to'
I tried the trial 5 times. . trying to get into it. Finally for whatever reason this last one took and I am a month in and loving it. There is a lot to do when starting out. I am "exploring" a lot and salvaging etc.
I figure in a another month I will look for a corp and head to 0.0 where I think I will enjoy the game more.
It is the kind of game that you have to play through the tutorials (all of them) to really get a feel for what the options are.
Best of luck!
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
Ah I see what you are saying. I like the FFA aspect but will make sure I am in a BS with the skills to match before heading out.
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
wow, 5 times!
Assuming you played all the days thats 70 days!
I'll bet by the time it took you already knew much of the basics.
Maybe CCP should make the trial 60 days, lol
Oh no. . the first few times I tried it just past the first tutorial. The 3rd I signed up and didn't get a chance to play. The problem was that I was trying the game out after getting burnt out on something else. . not the best time to try a new game. Given the amount of learning that is required and my mood at the time (and lack of time) it just didn't work out. Somehow I knew I would like it and kept going back. . but in the wrong frame of mind. This time I had more time to kill and wasn't playing anything.
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
Great pointers. I will make sure I do that. I will buy every book I can get my hands on - and train of course. Don't want to drag them around 0.0 as a noob
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
Controls is up to CCP
However, while the gap between vets and new pilots may seem huge, its not actually that big. All skills are capped at level 5, and most skills only give between a 1% and 5% boost per level, If you identify what you want to fly and concentrate on that skillset you can be within reach of a veteran quite quickly. Veterans get more toys to play with but they can never be better than level 5 in anything.
F2P/P2P excellent thread.

There was a time when I'd have Said BattleShip minium for any 0.0 activity. BS's are the work horse of every corp, they are tough and can be made to do virtually any task. With relativly low skills you can use them to Rat, mine, explore, haul, bait.
After getting a few friends into 0.0 tho its probably easier to stick with Battle cruiser, not quite as flexible but quicker!.. and being quick in 0.0 is very important. (by quick I mean physically able to warp around faster no quicker at killing things)
BC are also quite cheap and relativly desposable. Depends on the corp and the territory around.
I actually use a HAC for most 0.0 activity now, an Ishtar with t2 sentries, same damage output as a BS, as quick as a cruiser, expensive tho
In Sept I'll reach my 1 year anniversary for EVE. First game I've stuck with for this long since vanilla WoW. It will take a couple of years to beat my EQ addiction though.
I would like to warn you
It may take bit longer for EVE to get a gripe on you (quite bit longer, it only clicked for me after third trial+1month).
But when it does - its going to crush you.
Its probably most addictive MMO out there.
Beware
Oooooh, a lonely Bs. Probably the easiest target to kill in both low and 0.0. A brick that can't properly defend itself against most ships and can't run away properly.
Om nom nom nom.
What. My 1.2m sp alt was killing those rats in a cruiser and the lower bs in a frigate. They're extremely easy to tank using a cruiser or frigate and one only needs semi-solid dps to wear them down.
Also, the highest bounty of belt rats is 1.85m.
To this day, my only real experience in 0.0 ratting was almost a year ago while I still under 1.6m SP. I was in a highsec corp that just ran missions and cleaned out a belt once or twice a week at the time, and we were wardecced. This was still back when Providence was controlled by CVA, so the leadership sent us to Prov until the dec was over. I took a ship I figured would work for 0.0 yet was cheap enough to lose without crying even back then, a Moa. Worked fine, the bonuses to shield resists and extreme range let me orbit the mil+ sansha rats quite effectively even at such low SP. Took a long ass time to down a single one but back then I was estatic at the ISK I was making doing it.
