Seems like a lame sci-fi attempt at Oblivion, but gone horrifically wrong.
the UI is horried. the gameplay is very crappy.
And the Animations are a immersion breaker. (Yes I know Oblivion had the same animations, but Oblivion was Fantasy theme, and made up for it in other areas)
Maybe I am not giving Fallout a chance. is it really worth while to keep playing it?
Iam tired of the long dialogs, and want some gameplay action.

The pro's and con's of Oblivion also apply to Fallout 3. It's also quite a bit buggy. The thing that makes it enjoyable are the mods, just like in Oblivion.
Have you played Fallout 1 & 2? Those are old games by now, both having come out in the late 90s. FO3 didn't quite have the same feel as the first 2 games. The level of story and game affecting choices in FO3 was nowhere near the original 2 games. But if you're curious as to why there's a bunch of guys that want a proper Fallout sequel, you can get Fallout 1 & 2 for cheap. There's a bundle out there that has both and Fallout Tactics. The setting and theme of the Fallout universe is a post-nuclear war world. No big governments to keep everything in order and to provide. Small, shanty settlements here and there, roving bands of bandits, mutated creatures, mutants, etc to give you problems. The theme also makes homages and draws elements from Mel Gibson's old "Mad Max" and "Road Warrior" movies (both badass, if I might add). The USA before the nuclear war in the game had a 40's, 50's vibe to it, but you see some examples of advanced technology before the war.
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." (First Lieutenant Clifton B. Cates, US Marine Corps, Soissons, 19 July 1918)
Just how far are you actually in the game?

I love the open, free-roam aspect of the game. I can go anywhere I want any time I want, and no matter how many times I play through the game, I always come across something new.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
Do you like ANYTHING? Every post I have ever seen that you have made has been horribly negative about everything.

Lol, that's exactly what I was thinking when I read the post. I read it, then looked at the username and was like "ooohh that explains it". His post actually made me want to play Fallout 3 again though...
Now that you mention it. Lol.
@OP. As much as i dislike F3, why post here? It's not even an MMO.
I completely agree with the op. I bought fallout 3 after reading all of the rave reviews and was completely dissapointed. "It's a massive open world that takes place in post apocalyptica!!"
This sounded awesome to me.
Sure the world is huge and filled with storylines and different characters, however it all takes place in a giant garbage dump. I dont care how open-world and expansive it is if it all takes place in a massive open-world garbage dump.

What did you think it would be? Luxiurious gardens and primevel forests? The game was designed to look like Washington D.C. got the crap beat out of it by nuclear weapons while still having some landmarks recognizable.

It's kinda like x-com.
the first one was epic, but the 3rd one just plane sucked. But hay it's still a great IP.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
What do you expect from an area that was nuked to high heaven? Lush sparwling green forests?
Anyway, I did find some things in fallout 3 to be a little silly or just plain "meh". But I liked it as a good time waster. I always loved blowing up super mutants. Anyway.. fallout 3.5.... I mean... fallout new vegas is coming soon, and hopefully that is better.
What did you expect?
I just got around to getting it last month, and I have to admit I was a bit underwhelmed aswell. It is a little too similar to Oblivion, only real difference was with guns.
Don't get me wrong, I love oblivion, so the thought of that was pretty awesome, it was actually after playing through that again (for I don't know how many times now) last month that I finally decided to pick up fallout3.
My biggest problem with fallout3 was with the world and story though.
The World you get to explore really wasn't as large as I had hoped, only about 1/3rd the size of what oblivion comes packaged with. The main Story itself was pretty damn short too, shorter than obvivion's and I didn't think that would be possible, not to mention there is no where near as much "side-quest" content to mess around with, some things like factions/guilds (like the theives guild, or dark brotherhood :P) would have been nice.
Perhaps all I am missing and expecting from the game is in the DLC? Can't say I was impressed enough to check, but I have a funny feeling the popularity of DLC these days is why I felt this game to be severly lacking, almost unfinished (much like a lot of games that come the past few years).
So I think i've mentioned Oblivion enough now, but imo it was a vastly superior game, especially with pre-packaged content, so much more to do and explore.
Personally the only reason I think Fallout3 did so well was soley because it went after the FPS crowd, and people who had no interest in morrow wind's fantasy setting (plus those who did lol). Seeing how neither of them would have played anything like it before it would be all to fresh and new for them, so it spread like wildfire to a new crowd and got tons of hype.
But to me it was just less of something i've already played and loved to death.
The timing of this post is funny... after finally reading about Fallout 3 for many months, and all the rave reviews, I finally purchased the full package 2 weeks ago. I spent roughly 30-40 hours playing it... I really wanted to like it, to just fall into the game and let it take me over, like a good game will, but it just never did.
I can see why people do like this game so much, but as much as I tried, I just couldnt get hooked into it. I guess it just wasnt for me.
For me, I think the thing that drove me nuts was the fact that you couldnt carry much with you before becoming encumbered. I purposely got my strength to max just so I could carry my max items, but I found I spent way too much time going back and forth to my house, loading up storage, instead of actually playing the game. This, combined with the fact that ammo is so hard to come by, just ruined it for me. I can take a game that has one or the other (limited carry space or limited ammo), but not both. If you want to penalize me by making ammo limited, at least let me carry a bunch of other stuff in case I run out of ammo...lol.
In any case, I do think it's a great game, and wish I could've gotten more into it... but it just didn't happen for me.
Nor me, looks nice and all, but an updated remake of how the 1 & 2 played would have been better. But it had to jump on the wagon and copy the 3d environments trend and dumb it down to be a cross platform, I miss the Pc exclusives game design that set out to challenge your mind and as be fun, now most gamers design is littered with concepts to make it simple for the console crowd.
I thought it was very polished and a great game. I love the setting and the story, and the game play was fun. I actually get pretty scared playing it (yeah I'm a total wimp) lol, but I figure it is immersive enough to me if I get scared. If you pay attention to the dialog and everything you will actually find a deep story, the game looks great, and there are a ton of options to playing. It also has different outcomes based on the decisions or actions you make in game. I think it's great for all of those reasons, plus I have a weird attraction to the post nuclear fallout stories.. and zombies. Color me weird I guess.

How do you play a game for 30-40 hours and say it didn't hook you? Anyway...
OP FO3 is basically a Fallout themed Oblivion mod.
If you like Oblivion you like FO3. FO3 starts to get good as you explore more and skill up a bit (probably 10 hours into it).
I've spent over 500 hours in Oblivion (across multi-platforms) and roughly 120 in FO3 (360) while I felt Oblivion was the much better game FO3 was pretty epic for what it was.
FO:NV looks to be more of the same so I would suggest not bothering with that one if you didn't like FO3.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Well seeing how Bethesda has always been about the story you are going to run into some intense dialog but they did a great job with it in this one. I understand your pain with the UI... it didnt seem so bad on console imo but playing it on the PC it kinda aggravated me. Having to do everything from that damned pipboy really just pissed me off especially how much of a pain it was trying to use it on the PC.
I still like the Oblivion series more but I guess its because I played them first.
Is it the godsend that some people make it out to be... no... but is it still a good game... yes
game just for fun
Happy every!
I loved it, played it for hours, loved scavenging and loved the characters.
I thought it was the most immersive post-apoc ever.
Guess it's one of those love it or hate it games.
I never understood what was the big deal with Oblivion. It was as bland as you can get.
Gameplay is king. Fallout 3's greatest asset is its graphics, which are incredible, so you take what you can get.
In order to make the most of your time in Fallout, you need to adopt the right frame of mind, which is anything other than sobre.
Brutalize your brain with narcotic, then wander the shores of the abyss with lolling jaw and bloodshot eyes, marvelling at the perfectly corroded bones of a once great civilization, its vitality parodied in the shuffiling gait of ghouls.
The best metaphor for this is your own existence as, with your brain numbed by an overstaturation on vapid entertainment, you play a computer game in your bedroom in what is most certainly humanity's twilight years, squandering your last opportunity for life experience on a simulation of one.
In my opinion I think you need to play the fall out series.. 1 & 2 - sure horrible graphics , great for it's time though. I also think maybe you should try out new vegas when released.
I am right there on the same page with you. But I never really gave fall out a chance until recently. The thing is , is that it really isn't all about the mechanics when it comes to bethesda games ... it's the story.
