World of Warcraft: Message From The President

Mike Morhaime, the President of Blizzard Entertainment made an announcement today regarding recent downtimes.  They will be giving players a one-day free time extension.  His letter is posted below:

Due to the increase in downtime caused by today’s hardware maintenance, we will be giving all players with characters on the realms listed below a one-day time extension. In addition, players on the realms below will also receive a rested experience bonus, whether or not they had left their characters logged out at an Inn.

We realize that this extended downtime is very inconvenient, but it is a necessary step for us to take in our efforts to increase performance and stability on these realms. For the last few weeks, these realms have experienced poor stability during peak times, which resulted in NPCs not spawning, lag, and frequent disconnects. We have determined that a large percentage of realms on the same backend infrastructure were operating at maximum capacity. This overpopulation caused problems with the service that ultimately led to the issues mentioned above.

Our first step in trying to alleviate the situation was to offer character transfers to reduce the amount of players on these high-population realms. The character transfers did reduce the total amount of players on the shared infrastructure, and we noticed an immediate performance increase. However, this increase only lasted a few days, as populations continued to rise.

Once it was shown that the character transfers did not sufficiently disperse the population, we began to modify the hardware backend for the affected realms. The most recent and substantial step of that process involved transferring the realm data to a new hardware setup. The goal of this procedure is to decrease the overall load on the infrastructure that the affected realms share.

The new hardware infrastructure was completed yesterday, and we are currently copying the character data from eight of these realms onto the new hardware. This transfer will significantly decrease the load on the current infrastructure, which should result in improved performance on all of the realms listed below. The data transfer is taking us longer than expected, but it is vital for providing stability to these realms.

We are totally committed to providing our players with the best play experience possible, and we will continue to streamline our code and add new hardware to our infrastructure until we accomplish that goal. We once again thank you for your patience during this time, and wish you continued good fortunes on your adventures in Azeroth!

Please note that this time extension discussed above is in addition to the two-day time extension announced yesterday that is being provided to players on all realms.

Sincerely,
Mike Morhaime
President, Blizzard Entertainment

Well.. just cancelled my account, something I should have done a long time ago. If it isn't fixed after the 12 days left on my account, bye-bye WoW.

Fun game, when I can play it. But the server crashes literally every night, and the last week has been all but unplayable.

So... who wants to be the first fanboi to say how I picked the wrong server, and how their server is running just fine?

    ROFLMAO

Ok WoW management. You might want to pay attention to what Verant did after the problems they had at release. What's that you say? You don't remember?

Well they had server stability problems and gameplay issues that weren't experienced during beta, despite the fact that beta testers warned them it wasn't quite ready.... (Sound familliar?)

Guess what Verant (now SOE) did:
That's right! They gave THEIR players an ENTIRE MONTH of extended free play. Not 1 lousy day, an entire month.

WOW continues to amaze me... as in "WOW what a colossolly miss-managed MMO".

What urks me is that even on the servers not mentioned there were issues. The players from the other realms that were down flooded the operating realms and caused unbearable slowdown. There was 10-20x the usual number of lvl1 characters roaming Ironforge griping about their server being down slowing the game to a crawl, the forums WERE TAKEN DOWN... and best of all, several people who attempted to cancel their accounts couldnt beacause the demaned cancel page wasnt working.

    Oi.

    Ok here it goes,

This is the best game i have played( i am only 13) in my life. But i swear, last night i had my char on a server that was up, yeah for my, but when i finally got into it after 10 min in que, all these people were lagging the fuckin server up. They even made a guild that was named " My server is down" and had 200 members. I think that they should only allow a sertin amount of peps u can make. That would help.

Honestly, I have never had a problem with the servers. I played on Draenor and I did have a few lag spikes in my 3 months of playing but thats about it. I don't think my server was ever taken down either.

I'm not trying to sound like a fan boy, but thats just my personal experiance with the game.

    Lets put it this way:
If enough users were impacted that they feel they need to give away game time then it was pretty darn major. When EQ came out some servers were fine but because the players of Fennin Ro (in particular) couldn't play for almost 3 weeks EQ gave away a free month to ALL players.

Just because 50% of the players are "ok" doesn't mean the game is ok.

WOW has issues, whether you want to believe it or not.

Sure their could be problems, I'm just saying that for me on a medium sized server everything was fine and that I've never had any real problems.
