The Agency: Fan Faire Preview

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

At this year's SOE Fan Faire in Las Vegas, MMORPG.com Managing Editor Jon Wood had the chance to sit in on a discussion about The Agency. Remember that game? Very little has been heard about it or from SOE in the past two years. This year, however, devs are ready to talk. Jon has a report on the panel and a hands-on preview of a PvP demo he played.

It was announced in July of 2007, the developers made a small push to talk about the game and to let the media know what they were planning. Since then, information has become more and more difficult to come by as the devs went all but dark throughout most of 2008 and 2009. Fast forward to 2010 and they seem more than ready to talk about the game, with a playable PvP demo even popping up at this year’s E3.

Is this only a first person or can you play in a third person? Sounds like fun, but I like third person better than first person.

When we get back from where we are going, we will return to where we were. I know people there!

Pretty disappointed they seemed to have totally ditched that suave, stylish-yet-fun cartoon style in favour of the bland, generic high-poly (= high spec requirement) look just like every other game on the shelves. This was their chance to try something a little bit fresh and light-hearted and it looks like they've totally passed it up.

Apparently I missed the announcement they finally went back to the drawing board on the graphics, the new screenshots are much more impressive then what I saw last time I looked at this game.

Why did they change the visuals? I actually liked the original concept and was looking forward to the game. It reminded me of the No One Lives Forver games when i first saw and that's what intially caught my attention. Now, it just looks like another glossy and generic shooter like every other ut3 engine game out there.

I smell another APB type disaster.

This games looks more like a shooter and less like a spy game, but I'll reserve final judgement for the release.

Looks a hell of a lot better than APB, so far from the look and what was said about the multiplayer demo they had going the FPS part of the game is done pretty well.  Looking foward to more information about the rpg elements of the game and how that all plays out.  Also looking foward to some information on how the PvE aspects of the game work.

I'm keeping my eye on this game.  There aren't many details yet, so I'm not sure how it will turn out, SOE does scare me a bit.  However, a quality MMO FPS would be a nice change of pace.

There are two factions but the classes in each have different combat roles. That spells recipe for disaster to me, it totally lacks balance.

You have a sniper/recon and gadget/engineer up against an assault and support class. How on earth is that going to be balanced?

balance is over rated, they both have the makeings to overclass eachother in some way. they all would have weaknesses to expliot and strengths to fight against.

in a way it does balance out. but the normal idea for balance makes everything boreing.

If the advantages balance out then you still have balance, but MMO and FPS history shows us that different power sets will result in more wins for one class. If you then limit classes to certain factions the only way it gets solved is by power adjustments in game. That is virtually impossible to do as sneakiness and pets cannot be balanced against dps and suppressive fire for example.

Based on the interviews I've seen, that's not how it works.  You can have members of either faction in your agency, and in fact a single character can eventually take on multiple roles (from either faction, though not at the same time).
