The leveling process

Gabby-airGabby-air Member UncommonPosts: 3,440

In another thread someone brought up the fact that people right now are complaining too much about the more or so obvious issues such as the mouse and what not rather than the actual gameplay and I started thinking critically how exactly the game will play out. The main things that stood out was questing, now as we all know there's a limit on leves which makes them well pretty pointless not to mention that they are nothing more than "kill x, bring y". Then there is the main storyline and the little bit we have in game right now isn't too great and is way too spread out to really matter that much, plus from what I know they don't give you exp.

So in the end are we pretty much going to end up grinding as the main way to level up considering there seems to be no other means or system mentioned by the devs regarding the subject? I know people will say the beta has no content right now and what not which I understand but have the devs actually mentioned anything regarding the subject, for example the guildleves will have actually storylines and a large variety of things to do and what we have right now is just to test if the basic concept works.

From what I ahve played so far

When you start you get a 'Quest' called "Treasures of the Main" that introduces you to the aspects of the game and opens up the storyline onwards,

Guild Leves are done to obtain XP,Gil, Gear, Loot and Faction with places (for example I gained faction with three different 'guilds')

Guild Leves can be done 8 times in 48 hours, you can also do Crafting Levels. Faction leves are not yet done but the faction coins you obtain will be used to 'Purchase' these and Faction leves are to ahve big bad bosses etc and be raid events (this is merely conjecture at this point).

Crafters and Gatherers gain Level XP for both Xp gauges, so you can still level by mining nodes etc. You can also do more Levels by joining peoples leves and doing the higher ranking rewards of them.

*When you select to activate leves you choose the STAR ranking, one being solo and five being Battalian strength*

I think I already mentioned it to you in another thread - but there hasn't been any news of traditional quests being in the game (i.e. talk to different townsfolk to get their personal quests that are tied into the lore somewhat - like the normal quests in FFXI).  I've already argued with people in 2 other threads about the very real possibility that they will not be added into the game, and the game will therefore end up with little content and heavy grinding.  You can check out some of the other FFXIV threads if you want to see what I've said about it - I'm not going to rehash it here, because some people will fight me to the death over that point.  IMO - your concerns are valid, and if we don't hear something from SE on the matter in short order, or see something pop up in open beta, you're going to have to like grinding to enjoy the game - plain and simple.

Yeh, the more I think about the game the more broken it seems to me but with all the quietness from SE I'm still hoping it isn't as bad as it seems its going to be. SE seriously needs to address this issues and fully explain what they want to achieve with the game and not just release hype vidoes every now and then that show nothing about how the game works. Quite frankly, the day I got into beta and found out there was no staff moderating or even on the forums I knew this lack of communication is going to cause a lot of problems. I don't even think they mentioned the technical problem with graphic cards thats ruining peopls hardware.

There always have been a huge lack of comunication with the players from SE side. I dont think they have improved one bit on this aspect.

You can get enormous amounts of physical experience simply by using non-combat skills such as Mining or Botany. An new miner using his/her skills efficiently can easily hit 30,000 physical EXP per hour simply by successfully going after Grade 1 mineral deposits. You can then massively bulk up a stat such as DEX or STR to help you quickly level up combat crafts when you switch over. Then you can switch to big monsters like Dodos, which give quite a bit of EXP, or even move on to higher grade mineral deposits. Local guildleves also give a ton of EXP if you can finish them successfully.

In other words, people who do nothing but fight beetles and wharf rats all game really don't deserve any pity when they complain about how slow the level up process feels.

I don't mean to sound rude but you do realize that not a lot of people like crafting and harvesting, but in short what your telling me is that I have to do them if I want to play this game because of the lack of content?

i believe what hes saying is if you go out and practice some gathering, like all good rpg players should, you can boost yourself nicely, ive also heard theres time limits imposed on how much xp you can earn before it stops coming in for any kind of class job, sounds like a good time to take a break sleep or do another task then combat to me!

I didn't know my mom was designer of this game. Be a good son and go out, be a good son and do some crafting.

When ever someone says "be good" + something, I give them finger. It goes same idiocy as "your not man if you don't go army", "real men don't eat salad" and other macho bullshit.

Its pretty simple. Some people find the endless "quest hub" grind to be more tedious than just killing stuff. There are billions of games where you can grind quests until you are blue in the face. I really hope that FFXIV doesn't have "traditional" quests as you call them. (which by the way, are actually modern quests, not really traditional.)

Secondly, the stupid game isn't even out yet, and everyone is having a hissy fit because they can't figure out the fastest way to get their "toon" to max level. Considering the game is not going to have "end-game" content when released, getting to end game is a moot point to begin with.

SE has said there will be quests.  And I've read a lot on the beta forums and that sentiment is echoed.  We are simply not being given the option of doing "storyline" quests right now.

As to leveling, right now its fighting mobs.  Being beta we did not want to put the effort into finding a linkshell, but the wife and I would load up on leves and then do them one at a time (you could load up but we decided not to).  You get 5? star options.  *solo, **band, ***group and 2 or 3 others we havn't tried.  The two of us could do the *** one for more exp and gil.

This seems like the primary path of leveling, that and "grinding".  If you get a group together though you should be able to push out a lot of them.  they have you travel all over the place so they are not so bad, plus being all new its kinda nice.

The actual level up process is a bit odd though.  It doesn't jump at you that you got new abilities although its kinda quick to check.  Then you have the 2 level types and yeah.  There does seem an oddity for those pc people using a controller.  When you go to select a new ability there is a pull down menu that you select your class from.  It doesn't do anything...  But if you do it with the mouse after some UI lag it will display all your abilites.

I don't suppose you could provide a link to this by chance?

I'm hoping there will be more quests like the storyline ones. I've only done the starting one, guess I should do the others before this phase of beta ends.

The cutscenes are well done and I really enjoyed it. Making more of these one time affairs that you only ever do once would be nice since leves I imagine are good enough(though 24hour cd would be better..) to be repeat grinding quests.

I loved the cut scene quests, working for the Star Onion Brigade and the Cat Burgler was so fun.
