Square Enix is introducing a “fatigue” system to upcoming MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV which will apparently see players hit with crippling penalties if they play more than an hour a day, with those daring to play more than 4 hours having their XP reduced to 0.
Square Enix acknowledge the existence of the system in an interview and in previous comments, but are strangely reticent about providing specifics:
Tell us about the “fatigue” and “dormancy” systems please. We wanted to introduce a system to reward players who don’t have a lot of time to play. Maybe it looks as though we are placing long playing users at a disadvantage, but the idea is really to let play for short periods be viable. Won’t that cause some concern amongst players who play for longer? We want these players to try different classes. If you change class the fatigue doesn’t affect you, so you could try non-combat classes as well. You actually have more play choices now as you can make more characters. |
“Some concern” may be a colossal understatement if early reports of just how draconian the limits are turn out to be correct:
Fatigue goes up to about 50% in 2 hours, and it takes 2 days to go down! So, if you play 4 hours you have to stop playing completely for 2 days! WHAT!? Only 1 hour a day! What’s really amazing is that you have to pay a monthly subscription for this… They can’t get away with this on a subscription game. They’ll be sued! So you get bonuses for staying logged out – the servers are going to be nice and quiet, aren’t they! More on the “dormancy” system: Recovery takes time. 2 hours of combat or 1 hour of craft will induce “dormancy.” The dormancy is actually shared over different characters. It will decrease gains to 0% in the end. It seems to be proportional to the amount of XP you earn. Both light and heavy player are going to weep... |
Such systems are not unique, but Square Enix appears to have taken the system to an extreme likely to either completely eliminate its “hardcore” player strata – to say nothing of its high-handedness in dictating to players that they can only play an hour day.
The interview is from Famitsu, but the article was posted on Sankaku Complex.

Strange if the system turns out to be that harsh. When I heard fatigue system, I thought of a system similar to Allods Online where players build up an amount of fatigue and then can use that to get more exp, which works for people who do not play as long. However 4 hours per day seems a little limited.

"We wanted to introduce a system to reward players who don’t have a lot of time to play."
That system doesn't "reward" players at all. It just punishes them. Ugh, they're so pig-headed!

This is a bit too harsh and will turn off many prospective customers. I was fairly interested in the game, but this is a big turn off for me. The bit about trying other classes has me a bit upset as well. If I wanted to try other classes I would. I don't need a draconian ruleset to force me to play other classes. Completely ridiculous.
its basically a spit on the face of the P2P model...
So they want to tell me how to play the game that I'm paying them to play?
Bye-bye pre-order, I tried to remain optomistic through the bugs but this, I'm going to speak with my wallet.
The death knell of FF14 sounds off before it was even released.
That, and really the communication issue. Not even with the Japanese player base do they communicate with.
It's kinda sad really. I was looking forward to the game, but the more I hear about the beta, the more hype it looses for me. Oh well, just another game I don't have to buy.
Wow they actually want to go through with this. Kept thinking it was so harsh for beta purposes so people play as many classes as possible to find possible bugs all around.
There has to be some confusion over this. Not about the fatigue system itself. I understand that there is one in the game but this harsh?
I find that hard to believe.
Frankly, I don't see why there needs to be one at all. Why someone else should be penalized because they have more time to play than myself or gaming is of more importance to them is beyond me. All the more power to them. What the hell do I care?
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
the second part of the OP's quote is just speculation. Nobody really knows how this system is going to work yet, and yes on the surface it sounds like a bad thing
theres no mention of the surplus system in this post, and its speculated that this xp that appears to be kept from the players is actually being warehoused. Although, just like the doom and gloom speculation, nobody really knows just yet. Theres a lot of theory crafting going on.
I tought FF XIV will be f2p now i read sub based and with a limitation to 1 h per day thats hilarious .
Be honest whos playing an mmo 1 h a day there are people whos playing on weekends but than not 1 h only more becouse everybody knows that going onine in an mmo for 1 h is to say hello /g Hello everyone and off lol , and people have to pay for that ?
Well if thats true than R.I.P. FF XIV

You know the one thing I found really interesting is how the monthly sub is going to be 12.99.
Considering all the people that go on and on about inflation and how we should be thankful games are still $15 a month because companies must be losing money left and right since it has been $15 for years and everything costs more! Inflation! Inflation!
I wonder what theories the forum economists have about them going lower than $15 as their monthly rate? Considering according to some of them we should be thankful we aren't paying $20 or more per month by now.
Of course, that's 12.99 for one toon. Having more than one raises their rate.

Because it costs extra for more than one character, per character and they limit your inventory.
I think the big thing Square is missing here is that we, the collective MMO playing masses, have been clamoring for more freedom in games for quite some time and progress has been made by most MMO devs while slow, it's still there.
Instead of expanding the possibilities they seem to be trying to force us to play the game in a set, specific way. Not many folks out there are going to put up with it, I would wager.
The sad part about this is it's an easy remedy and if the masses really don't play due to these "features" then they will likely fix them. The problem being that with most MMOs that have come out recently and tried to fix core issues later is that it is often too late to win back many of their potential customers. See AoC, Aion and WAR for examples.
this
They would be making more than 12.99, specially if this fatigue system turns out to be as said in that interview, people will have to pay for other toons to play when their main is locked up progression wise
more than questionable antics...
Yeah, I know. Already edited my post. Still only 12.99 if you stick with one character and would you really need more than one retainer if you're only playing the one anyways?

Eh, AoC seems to be doing alright considering what happened. Aion I can't say one way or the other. Neither of those games is going to flourish the way they could have thanks to their launches but I don't think they're toast either.
Now Warhammer is a different bird altogether. For whatever reason that game is at death's door and there doesn't seem to any chance at it recovering at all.
I really think this is being exaggerated personally. While I believe it is in play I don't think it is nearly as bad as some are making it out to be. Still, frankly it should not be in game at all.
Why someone should be concerned or care if someone else has more time on their hands to level faster than they can is beyond me. Especially when you consider there isn't going to be any open world PvP.
The amusing part are the posters I have seen that think this system is great because it will get rid of all the [insert insult here] from the game. Because that's what every gamer should be rooting for is having a group of potential customers to a game write it off before the game even launches. Their logic is rather hilarious really.

We here in the west recently got treated to a "Fatigue" system in the form of Dungeon Fighter Online. I voted with my wallet as well: I played for 2 monthes and they never saw a dollar from me. However, Square has just ratcheted this up to a new level of bullcrap. It's funny really. Everytime they brought a game over, I bought it. Then they released a superior version in japan called the "International Version" with even more stuff than the things they added to ours. Some were even completely different (Final Fantasy 12 Zodiac Job System).
Now? Now I firmly believe Square can blow me. I say Square because Enix/Level 5 could never be this effing dumb. I believe I shall place these people on the same exact "you'll never see my money again" list as NamcoBandai and their buyable betas. Has every gaming corporation lost their FARKING MIND? LOOK AT THEM! Infinity Ward strips out dedicated servers and charges $15 for a map pack. NamcoBandai starts bringing out beta versions of the game, later introducing the "full" version to the PS3 (this started with Tales of Symphonia, a game I was stupid enough to buy).
Then? Then I found out that a load of Nexon's games (Elsword, DFO, Dragon's Nest) all had some sort of fatigue system. Oh, and don't forget "Launch Day DLC". Or XBox Live requiring you to pay for the right to use your own EFFING INTERNET CONNECTION TO GET ONLINE!
I suppose since Nintendo saved gaming in the 80s (I'm lookin' at you Atari/ET the Game...), and Sony made it popular, the gaming industry is now headed entirely by Bobby Koticks, not complacent to release a good game, they have to nickle and dime their entire audience until they've strangled the life out of them. I kind of wish now that Jack Thompson had destroyed gaming. At least we could have hated him instead of the very developers we're supposed to be supporting.
Players in FFXI already spread their time amongst many different jobs, the majority have probably played at least 5+ jobs,so for Square to act like they are all concerned about people playing other class,is a cover up for something else.
Perhaps i have already mentioned it in other posts, they are worried about RMT with maxxed out players in the first 1-2 weeks and then creating chaos for the economy.Square said they would have the rmt problem solved for FFXIV as they learned from their FFXI mistakes,i'll believe it when i see it.
CONTENT?..perhaps Square feels they will be pressured for more content VERY early in the game as hardcore players may hit end game status very quickly. This might also mean that Square does not have enough high level content, but will release the game early and hope to catch up over the first month or so,whilst they limit players progress.Square was also used to creating FFXI a game thta had it's own time sink via sub class system,FFXIV has no sub class system,so i am sure they needed a way to slow players progress.
All is speculation [of course]i tried to cover some base as i know how Square operates from playing FFXi for so long and seeing how they make all their other games.Truth is they are 100% covering up their TRUE intentions and they will never tell us the real reasons,so speculation is fair game here.We will know the eventual truth as time goes by,if they remove the fatigue system a few months in,then it was probably to buy some time to finish content. If RMT runs rampant and the economy and competition for selling goes rampant, then they may act with even more harsh restrictions.
Remeber in FFXI,when Square made restrictions to combat RMT,they also hurt the fair players in the game just as much,so Sqaure does not always think very intelligently when making decisions.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
The second part of that article as stated earlier is just pure speculation. Hell I played about 7 hours first day I entered beta 3 and never once ran into fatigue or surplus. Those 7 hours weren't dedicated to playing one class but I was still busy progressing throughout that entire time frame. Right now no one knows exactly how the system works, we just know the system is there. it would be nice for SE to clear up the confusion on this mechanic because everyone is spouting their theories and then articles like this are misleading others to believe it is fact.
A.K.A. VirgoThree
I have two words for Square and FFXIV. "Fuck That!"
I been testing this since March all I can say is I canceled my FF14 pre order,I also have been testing DCUO for sometime and I have pre ordered that instead.
Could be content concerns. Might be cost too. This game could get pricey for altaholics as it is. $3 per toon after your initial one plus $1 for each retainer. Adds up rather quickly.
I mean if you were to create four characters in this game with one retainer for each your monthly sub would be 24.99. Nice chunk of change for them.

Well that is the nail in the coffin, I really wanted to play something until GW2 comes out but looks like I'll just have to be patient.
